So if baker is traded for pick 12 (and this is done before the draft obviously) Come draft night a bid are put in for player X and matched your still getting the 12th player that is available to you.
That is my point.

So if you sat down and rated all the players getting drafted, we would get the 13th best player. Now if that bid wasn't matched we would get the 12th best player though.
You have to take into account where that draft pick will end up and what players are available at that pick.
So back to a early 20 pick, if you could get a player rated at the early 20's for Baker, that seems pretty reasonable, in reality you are getting a player rated later though because of FS and academy etc. Is that still fair value?
This year's draft is supposed to be deeper, so maybe, but in other years there can big a huge difference in a player around the early 20's to a player around 30. Also there is more likely to be a well rated slider the earlier the pick.
Maybe we have to agree to disagree, but with the current system you can value a pick at face value because it slides back.

We're in a unique position because of the flexibility to trade draft picks many years into the future. One of the smartest strategies when they hit rock bottom is OKC in the NBA. They continually traded for future first-round picks and second round picks, even at the expense of current players/picks. Teams often undervalue future picks in favour of short-term gains. Provides long-term leverage and optionality when rebuilding. Similar to us, they had a heap of salary cap space because they were poor, rebuilding, and all their young drafted talent were still on small contracts. As a result they were the beneficiary to a lot of salary dumps similar to Jack Bowes going to the Cats with a pick attached.

They are a completely different case study as they can trade so many years in advance, and a single player in the NBA can completely transform a franchise. But it really would be wise, I think, to flip some of those mid to late first rounders (if we get them) into future first round picks. This is such an even draft I think teams would be willing to overpay.

Having a strong draft hand/hoarding all the picks for the next few years should be an aim, despite being probably a poor performing team it gives us a lot of power.

I like this thinking and have often thought a Future pick is significantly under-valued. This is because teams at the bottom of the ladder need to appease fans and need quick sugar hits for membership, sponsors etc. This is especially true on draft night when clubs under pressure (especially the recruiting team) make rash decisions to get higher up the draft selection - at the expense of a longer/smarter policy.

We've had our recent glory, we know there is some pain coming over the coming year or 2, we have the credits in the bank with our supporters and are well established financially - so there is no rush.

The more we can hold off and trade for future picks the better value we will be 2026+
