It’s crazy to think how upbeat we are after a 2 win season and players wanting out. Shows we are actually thinking strategically now and not emotionally.
Our boardroom with one left is WTF lol I have seen clubs go downhill but not from all angles :'(

Pretty sure we got a full board going, and we are clearing the deadwood from the coaches ranks, and the players who don't wanna be there (it's all got a bit too hard or maybe they want Dimma hugs) are getting moved on for value. We're also revamping the fitness and conditioning side. And we're gonna have an amazing draft hand. Maybe we following different clubs?

Seriously mate I never thought we’d see a flag in my life time. To see three. Two live in the flesh and now we to pay a little price. Bring it on. Best time to be a fan or a supporter is on the climb. Let’s go
Absolutely mate it’s a different kind of journey now
Get to watch some kids turn themselves into household names and maybe even champions of the club

Like we did with Jack, Cotch Dusty ect

Funny to think we have posters who can't see how this shakes out. Maybe in their minds they think we just all of a sudden had Cotch, Dusty, Jack, Ellis, Vlaustin, Rance, Edwards, Astbury, Bolton, Rioli etc etc. This is the reset we needed before Tassie comes in. And of course in their negative heads, no one will want to come to Richmond....Oh and I recxkon these same people don't understand how flush with cash we are now to attract players. But you know, we only have one board member apparently.

What I've enjoyed the most about this year is that while we may have had a plan in place when Yze was initially appointed a year ago, we've actually been smart enough to recognize that things weren't going to plan and have adjusted on the fly to now position ourselves to dominate this draft, while clearing out those that it appears aren't willing to do the hard yards again to get back to the top. I've said it in the Yze thread and I'll say it in here, I'm more excited about the next couple of seasons than I was after 12 months under Hardwick, because we're starting from a lower base due to not having the likes of Cotchin Riewoldt Rance & Martin already on the list.

I've just gone shopping for hats as I said i would eat my hat if some of those trades happen that have been fantasized about

Haven't bought it yet but it's very close.

Imagine:

Bolton for pick 9 & 10
Rioli for pick 6 & 20
Baker & 9 for pick 3

Gee, that might ease my stomach a bit from the thought of Graham and 4 more years.

Trade 39,41 & 47 to Brisbane for pick 14

Hit the draft with:

1,3,6,10,14,20,21,29

Oh My God Omg GIF by The Office

I think we have to be prepared for the club to make moves that get back future firsts/ seconds as opposed to 6-8 high picks only this year.

Think Tom Morris has suggested we’re keen to spread the intensity of the rebuild over two years.

Not sure what your trying to put across here?
In hind sight he should have gone 1 or 2?
Maybe clubs were scared to pick him early because he would be bid on?
I don't get your point.

To be clear on my point, if we get pick 23 and by the time we get to use it we are picking the 30th player after all the FS and academy selections, are we happy that the 30th selected player in the draft is compensation enough on the night for the player we traded?

Let's not get into the argument that we may look back in a few years and have got a player that should have been top twenty, they may also play a couple of games then disappear never to be seen again.

History shows the deeper you go in the draft, the less likely you are to get quality.

So if baker is traded for pick 12 (and this is done before the draft obviously) Come draft night a bid are put in for player X and matched your still getting the 12th player that is available to you.
That is my point.

Yeah GWS reckons the contract demands of a swathe of draftees, when they approached the maturity of their first deal, was a big issue. Think we are a bit different as our 2024 crop less likely to wave the homesick flag.
It’d be preferable to spread it but if we are confident the dude there at pick, say, 17 is better than the ones expected to be available at someone’s predicted 2025 first selection, hit the pick now.
Yes a fair bit of guesswork, but educated.

Might be the wrong call. Someone’s 2025 first might be way earlier than we expect. But we are 12 hours after Max Holmes (who was far from a slam dunk draftee it must be said - he had risks) lit up a QF so there’s that

I have no insights at all into the 2025 draft group, but on current information & as an exercise/ ceteris paribus, what pick in 2025 would be expected to = pick 17 in the 2024 crop?
Pick 10? Pick 12? Pick 17? If it’s much lower than 17, then absent a really sweet deal, hit the pick.

To be clear I want 8 2024 picks < 25 & also 5 in the first 15 of 2025 they are my terms go do it Blair

1, 3 and 6 could realistically net us FOS, Jagga and Lalor.
In my opinion, having control of your own destiny is severely underrated. If we have identified certain players that we want to take early, having the flexibility of 1, 3 and 6 is significant.
With the imminent departure of Josh Battle, Saints could end up holding picks 7 and 8 which starts pushing everything back.
This is the most important draft we will have for the foreseeable future. We have to have a semblance of control at the top end.
Then if we really want to control our own destiny.
Offer pick 6 & 21 to Norf for pick 2.

1/2/3/9/14
Wouldn't that be some hiest.lol

We're in a unique position because of the flexibility to trade draft picks many years into the future. One of the smartest strategies when they hit rock bottom is OKC in the NBA. They continually traded for future first-round picks and second round picks, even at the expense of current players/picks. Teams often undervalue future picks in favour of short-term gains. Provides long-term leverage and optionality when rebuilding. Similar to us, they had a heap of salary cap space because they were poor, rebuilding, and all their young drafted talent were still on small contracts. As a result they were the beneficiary to a lot of salary dumps similar to Jack Bowes going to the Cats with a pick attached.

They are a completely different case study as they can trade so many years in advance, and a single player in the NBA can completely transform a franchise. But it really would be wise, I think, to flip some of those mid to late first rounders (if we get them) into future first round picks. This is such an even draft I think teams would be willing to overpay.

Having a strong draft hand/hoarding all the picks for the next few years should be an aim, despite being probably a poor performing team it gives us a lot of power.

well said...
especially the adjusting the plan on the situation as the year went on and spun into the abyss
the only way is up tige's

We definitely will do great with rioli compo.
Remember in a interview with Wayne Campbell he stated,
GWS WAS MY JOB BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE,IM A TIGER THROUGH AND THROUGH,AND WANT THEM TO DO WELL.
wayne also grew up barracking for Richmond too

tiger from birth

I really don't know what I'm talking about, and much about AFL team building, that paragraph was a whole essay. But
TLDR; lets hoard picks it gives us power and flexibility, we'll be a patient fanbase because we've seen so much success recently.
It’s a good note - helped me. We all want more success ASAP, and this year’s draftees have identities and features we know now, but if someone smarter than me tells me/ decides that “this” deal makes objective sense over the medium term, so be it

People also forgetting as of next year picks can be brought for salary cap space.
Think with the trades this year we pay a fair chunk of the 3 guys salary over the next year or 2 which will net us better picks and in turn free up a shit load of cap space the next few years to buy picks before all the youngsters are due large contracts which will continue a sustainable list build with a flow of talent over a 4 or 5 year period.

You’re assuming Ken survives another year let alone this finals series

He’s a dead man walking

Coke Zero to go out of business
john carr wont be any better, he learned off stinkley

mate there is blokes in here who will absolutely rage at our full time recruiters who watch every game, interview every kid and spend years analyisng their form for not picking one u18 kid whose highlight package they preffered to another

What I like about this change is we don't need to overpay players that haven't earnt it & gives us a chance to balance our list before Tassie join the league. If we do this well, we get a good leg up over the other teams in the middle of the ladder & teams on the way down the ladder.

100% use our space to pay contracts of the departing 3, get better picks and use the following few years space in the cap to buy picks until our players have earned the right for us to be using the full 100% on them.

I do like this idea, 2 years makes sense, investing in 1 draft with so many picks is high risk. If it means we can secure better picks over the 2 years then that would be ideal.
