I like the idea of recruiting Lipinski as a wingman. Lacks speed but has really high endurance, really clean and composed with ball in hand, great overhead and he's only 23.

Could see him and Ralphsmith on opposite wings for years to come.

What does he cost us?
Whatever we gave them for bongs Lloyd

They are known quantaties at AFL level. And are ready to go. Draftees are speculative. In a premiership window, so bringing in established players who are still young is a decent idea.
Every player basically does come from the draft though 🤷‍♂️

Plus kpf forwards are expensive at AFL level.

not to mention all the kpps in the draft sound like being taken between 15-30 we can nab some with our 2nd rounders.
JVR seems to be slipping so we could nab him late 1st early 2nd.

There also seems to be a myth that runs through the board that we don’t want to be hawthorn. We’re nowhere close, we’ve been using our picks every year. The Hawks from 2008-2019 when they finally collapsed used 3 first round picks

19 - Isaac Smith
19 - Ryan Burton
22 - Lovell

so two mature agers and 3rd guy they traded for Wingard. That’s selling you future for their 3 flags

since the start of our rise (2013 compared with Hawks 08 early premiership) when we stopped getting access to high end of the draft (even though that really stopped during the compromised GC GWS drafts)

12 - Lennon
12 - C Ellis
15 - Rioli
29 - Bolton
17 - Higgins
20 - CCJ
25 - Balta
20 - RCD
21 - Dow

Some are failures, some are potential but we didn’t ignore the draft while we were successful, which is why we can take a flyer with these 3 first round picks to bridge the here and now to the future with Hopper and Green. We are thin on the ground with KPF but they’re hard to find even in the first round, and again this years KPP sound like they’ll be going in the late first to late second round, so we hope we can nab them with our 2nd rounders.

I don't believe the club would let go CCJ and Chol pure stupidity.Soldo coming back from a acl ,Nank has his injuries and Mate hasn't even played 2 or 3 games in the vfl. Ryan still needs time. One will stay hopefully CCJ it is sensible decision.

None of those realistic names excite me.Wallis no, Narkle I could live with , but needs work , Billings pass.Go to the draft if that's the list.

I think we need to go hard to the draft.

Not even sure about trading next years first. That could be a mistake. Not a Collingwood mistake but could be a midtake.

I think with the changing climate and a lot of unknowns we need to attack the draft.

2022 could be a mystery still in terms of outside events.

I think go hard in this draft including getting Bulldogs first and see how the youngsters develop is the best option.

Emphasis must be on youth
The draft is probably just as much an unknown due to the lack of lower league footy the last 2 years

Without any mail on this at all, I wouldn't be surprised if Pickett requests a trade back to WA. He's clearly had some family struggles this year (his business, that's all we need to know), and with us being on the hunt for a wingman I think he might be leaving us.
cant let this happen . Got to get him to 100 games for father son /daughter eligibility.

Yeah I dont get the anti traders.

As long as the players being traded for are young, then its actually the safer plan.

OTHER

- Chris Newman - back to Richmond

Great summary, very helpful for those who couldn't tune in/don't have time. :thumbsu:

Just on the Newman point, my take was T71 said that's a maybe, with other former Tigers including Knights (my personal preference) in the 2022 assistant 'maybe' frame too.

Hopefully the 24 kilometre trade happens, and…..

Hopper’s crossing to Richmond. 😁😍

I would love Hopper , he's a bull who is consistent.

Sorry , I just don't believe we would ever have chased Dunstan. I would go as far to say that he wouldn't even have been considered

If we are going to get a player on a needs basis ( visa ve Hopper ) then Jack Billings is our man.

Richmond of 2006 might have chased enigmas like Dunstan , but not now. I find it all quite funny that people still think we are that dumb and desperate.

I think both are good options. I see the merit of both sides.

Draft is significantly cheaper but for unknown quantities. They can also turn into anything.
Trading is for known quantities but more expensive.

From Fox:
At Hawthorn, Chris Newman has been in charge of the backline in 2021 but doesn’t have a contract for next year. Richmond is keeping a close eye on him, though Sam Mitchell would be keen to keep Newman at the Hawks. The two have forged a close bond in recent seasons.

I was invariably critical of Newman as a player, but in fairness to him, I've liked what I've seen from the Hawks' developing backline, it's going to be a real strength for them over future seasons.

Reports today Billings will re sign at Saints.

Club has to decide if we’re going again or rebuilding on the run or a full rebuild

If it’s rebuild head to the draft

Rebuild on the run bringing in narkle and lipinski cheap strengthens us while still having picks

If we’re going again you throw your picks at hopper and bring in talia

* Hopper is no chance of leaving GWS , The least likely of the giants to leave imo
* Green should be our #1 priority if possible but cant see that happening this year
* Dunstan - What do people see in this guy , If St Kilda are not prepared to keep him what the hell would we do with him
* Lipinski - Only if he is cheap both $$ and picks #50+
* Bulldogs 1st rounder should be well and truly be in our sights
* Narkle - Not really fussed to be honest but would want him to be better than what we have seen of him this year
* Talia - No he will be in demand from pleb clubs and wont be cheap will still demand $400k
* Chol - Happy for him to leave to GC if he brings in decent compo , but happy for him to stay if on low $$$
* CCj Rather we keep him but thats not our choice and will depend on what he wants - But if he leaves rather GC / GWS than another club
* Wallis - Really dont think he is that big extractor we are looking for and his age as well as $$$ could be an issue
* Caddy - Hoping their is interest from other clubs and we can get the salary off the books -Perfect fit for Norf
* Billings - NO

How much strife is GWS in cap wise?

In fact how much strife are GWS, Swans, Pies in cap wise, and maybe Eagles?

If clubs start to move around good players to fix their cap, then all of a sudden new deals are on the table. That's where our good picks and having something left in the cap can work. Nothing much might happen, but it could shake free this year. Too many clubs needing to offload. Last year North and Dogs got good value from the Pies. That * 3 might be 2021.

And of course the clubs needing points plays into our hands as well.

A proper rebuild takes ten years if not longer.

That obviously does not suit RFC which is fair enough, other clubs that need to talk about full rebuilds typically delude themselves and fans by shortening the timetable. RFC is different because the youth already on the list and superstar elder statesmen

What RFC might do is a cheat rebuild.

To do a cheat rebuild requires heavy hitting of the draft and a relatively short trough with a massive upsurge at the back end so the U becomes a practical V in terms of optics over time.

Obviously the emphasis is on the draft and youth and then a switch at the back end to maximise talent and list build prior to the next premiership in the short to mid term with massive upside surge which is all about timing. It is a fluid situation. RFC can predominantly hit the draft this year with emphasis on youth and reassess based on the environment with co-vid etc.. as well as development and prospective talent. Bit like the situation the Warriors are in in the NBA but the AFL is largely different because the teams contain far greater numbers on field in terms of list management. With the Warriors they could get Simmons but figured its probably not worth it at the margin because of the talent of other teams like Brooklyn, lakers etc.. The Warriors will see what happens next season and then might target trades later on as the life cycles of other clubs like Brooklyn and Lakers etc.. alter and player movement commences again as expectations changes for each player as well as clubs providing new superior options to create list upside over the journey.

Other clubs do not have RFC's list flexibility. So depending in the situation RFC can cherry pick timetables based on talent available and the development achieved from the new recruits. Its all about getting maximum bang for buck in terms of maximising opportunity to win as many premierships as possible over a reasonable time frame. Nothing is in a vacuum so when RFC is doing the hard yards other clubs are losing out by not putting the development in.

What we do know is Hawks are going into recognised rebuild. We know North are doing it and we know Geelong is just a matter of time. Two years max is what Geelong can do surely before they fall off a cliff and its debatable they can get silverware before then anyway. Bulldogs have a real imabalanced list in terms of mids versus backs and forwards. So change must take place at some point which RFC can take advantage of with a fleible list with short and mid-term promise that is not falling off a cliff like Geelong. Other teams are in no-mans land and have structural problems and thats not factoring in cap problems of various lists so RFC can be patient and really be smart and astute by being select in how they recruit talent to maximise talent development and acquisition for premiership production
