The CJ v Chol debate is interesting. Key for me here is what role they are likely to play going forward and what there value is to us in moving.

I honestly cant see either of these guys playing any role other than the back up ruck and 3rd tall option. As mentioned, CJ and Lynch as 2 key forward targets makes us too top heavy and cumbersome, so dont think its a viable long term option to keep both as our 2 primary KPF's. If Jack was 28 and Lynch was 31 then keeping CJ would be the obvious choice.

Next year its likely we have Soldo and Nank both available, I think both will play if fit. Also Jack and Lynch will both play, so either of these guys are mostly backup and insurance for injuries, doesn't make sense to keep both on the list.

So who's the better 3rd tall/Ruck. CJ is the better forward, but Chol is the better ruck, CJ has shown better form as the 2nd forward, and may well end up the better player, but Chol's ruckwork is far superior IMO. So if we are looking as to who's going to fit our system better and provide overall value its not much different, Chol has shown he can be handy as the third tall, not so much as one of the 2 key pillars.

What do we get in return? If Chol leaves we get nothing, if CJ leaves we should get a late first rounder, maybe a pick that might nett us a more mobile Jack replacement i.e. Van Rooyen.

Based on this even though CJ likely to be the better player in the long run, if he doesn't fit our list need, and we get much better return, then better off letting CJ go and keeping Chol. My thoughts are its not just a Chol/CJ choice, it might be a Chol & Van Rooyen/CJ choice.

I wonder how much we’ve freed up in the salary cap with Dave and Bashar retiring? $1mill maybe.
Expect a couple more to go yet, maybe not as big contracts as these two, but maybe a few $ hundred g’s

Nil - they were not contracted for next year, so whatever our cap situation was remains the same - we just don't have to budget to re-sign them

Instead of going after a player like Talia, the club needs to focus on finding the right person. They are out there - Port only picked up Allir Allir last pre-season for a 2nd rounder. We need to take a smiliar approach and "find our guy" that has yet to blossom into an A grader and get him in.

Allir Allir was an insanely good move by Port, they nailed it. If we had made that move last year ourselves I think we would still have an open window, a intercept key defender for us is almost our biggest need imo

Other thoughts re this period

Yes for me to either Wallis or Dunstan, both are good solid AFL players in a position we have a glaring need. We have RCD, Dow and Matryn who are all prospective centre square players, I like the look of Dow and RCD, we need to see what these guys have to offer before selling the farm and trading in Hopper and Green when we might have guys just as good ready to explode. RCD was great that first game against GWS, where Hopper and Green played. I have a feeling he is the type who hides a bit in the shadow of the big name players, not uncommon, but left to flourish in his own right I think will be a good player. Lets see what we have first before we through a heap at these 2. Having said that if Green has been courted over time and we are confident we can get him next year, all good just draft accordingly for this year.

So what's our plan this year? Get in talent. we have the opportunity to get I believe 5 picks inside 30. I have a feeling this draft will be similiar to 17 and there will be good quality talls available picks 15-30, where we have a good chance of stocking on picks. Trade a 3rd for Narkle, like him. Trade a 2nd and 3rd for Bulldogs first. Trade pickett to WC for their second, get a late first for CJ. We can cover both Pickett and CJ. Get anything you can for Caddy as they wont play him, maybe even a four or five pick upgrade around a 20's pick. say our pick 26 for pick 22/23.

Finish the trade period with something like picks 7, 15, 17, 19, 23 & 27.

Look to trade with Carlton picks 15 & 17 if they are after Cerra for pick 6. Maybe even throw in next years second or the pick we get from WC for Pickett to get it done.

Head to the draft with picks 6, 7, 19, 23 & 27.

Trade for classy ball users/ inside out mids first 2 picks, then get the best talls we can for the 19, 23 & 27. I think there'll be 3 decent options available at that range.

I see it different. In today’s AFL climate a rebuild definitely does not need to take 10 years lol. You draft well, develop well and as certain players retire you replace them constantly. Still have some really good players in all positions on the ground so if we nail some picks and a few of our current kids come on it can turn extremely quick. Gone are the days of bottoming out

With the GWS cap situation people are seemingly overlooking the **** ton they saved with Cameron going. Plus the the talk in the media is Hopper will re-sign for 2 years taking him through to FA.

While he’d be a great get and just what we need I can’t see it happening tbh.

We’re done IMO. We just lost a key defender, an AA quality HBF, our midfield is shot and our key forwards can barely jump. I am worried for Dusty as well. We’re 7-8 players off challenging. We won’t be able to address our holes in one window.
This is my fear too. Dusty looked good, but mere mortal, this year before injury. I think any thoughts of "going all out while we still have Dusty" would be dangerous.

Hopefully an early finish to the season, and bolstering our coaching panel in the off season gives us a lift, but I do suspect we may have to face a few years of mediocrity in the shorter term.

Incorrect, we actually do gain cap space by them retiring, while they weren't contracted for 2022, their money would have been kept aside in case they were playing on. Now that they aren't that money gets released back into the cap. Some will be used in giving players an increase that are re-signing, while the rest will be available for any trade targets or to be banked for use in future years.

Well its not $900 million, but just under $900K, IS about right, averaging out his 4 years at $250K
I’ve got no issues with what Pickett is on now because as you rightly point out he was on peanuts when he arrived.
However he’s got 1 year of a 1 million dollar contract to run so if he does want to return to WA whoever takes him will have to be happy to take on that (unless we are happy to pay part).

My gut feel is that Hopper would be a fool to stay. Obviously we won't be able to pay him as much as other clubs who will chase him might. My gut feel is we are in with a real chance but we probably won't land him, unfortunately.
If he was keen on returning to vic we d be a chance , only teams that would offer more $ than us would be like haw or norf and then they’d be reluctant to hand over r1 picks . The 64,000 question is does he want to leave

I like the idea of recruiting Lipinski as a wingman. Lacks speed but has really high endurance, really clean and composed with ball in hand, great overhead and he's only 23.

Could see him and Ralphsmith on opposite wings for years to come.

What does he cost us?
If he has skill get him to Tigerland

Do you know or is this just your Ernest opinion
Just my honest opinion Bo, and based on what’s been reported. Media very strong he’s going to sign for 2 years, haven’t wavered at all.
You can tell he’s really engaged with his teammates too so I just can’t see him leaving and they rate him so highly

I'm really warming to the idea of Wallis.

Low risk at the money and contract length it'll take to get it done, high potential reward. He'd be getting a gig in a lot of midfields, genuine inside ball-winner who is not far off the top bracket, plenty of endurance, dangerous forward.

Best of all, to my thinking, he'll be absolutely hungry to stick it up Bevo for putting him through every players' nightmare. I can really see him putting in a massive pre-season and playing like a man possessed next year.

There's few more potent weapons on a football field than a talented, mature bodied player with the right mindset (which I believe Wallis does have in spades) who has got a massive point to prove.

Dunno if i am that incorrect. They were not contracted and had no contract in place fo 2022. Bit much to say that just because the club might have had a number projected next to them for any possible contract - its still just a projection of numbers. It physically make no difference to our 2022 actual cap space

Those close to Dave knew he was retiring this year but Houli wouldn't have been known. Had Dave have wanted to go on, cap space and a list space would have been allocated for him. It frees up some money. The replacement is likely to be a draftee on min chips so there is a gain there, without question. How much we were prepared to pay Bolton is another question. We may have budgeted for more and got him for less or budgeted for less. Lots to play out at this point.

Reports today Billings will re sign at Saints.

Well that aged well !!

Maybe raid on swans young posse of small forwards?? , payback for Stewie Maxfield !!!

Still stand by dunstan comment . Fk me , shades of Biddescombe all over it ! No , people latch on to theme and roll with it . NFI .

I don’t know much , I’m not connected and do not get “mail “ , but a bit of sensible reasoning is enough for know that thus club wouldn’t chase dunstan for $$$ or even if free . Let it go .

I have always been a big fan of Wallis but not sure he is really what we are wanting at this point. Kinda Caddy 2.0 - I think the cliff both their careers fell off are more to do with changes in the style of the league don't know if that type of forward is still useful.

Dunstan I have barely watched play this year , but looking at his numbers i could be talked into. I am relying on more keen watchers to give a honest feedback on him using "the eye test". Numbers wise though.... 26 years old - been a ball magnet his whole career with consistent linear improvement year to year. Looks to be having a career year after the Saints prematurely washed their hands of him. Might not cost a fortune as I dare say he would leave them as a "F-U" for the same, if not less money - to come to Richmond, a top club etc. Getting Dunstan and keeping our swag of picks is very appealing, minimal risk except for what will likely be a team friendly contract
