Suns kept pushing back parts of his contract to the last 2 years, now $850K each year. they don't want to pay it and are using pick 7 to bride a club to take the stupid contract on. AFL has green lit this, as he Pies, Giants etc are all in the same boat.

So, e.g., the Giants could push one of their overpaid guys out with a high pick as sweetener.

Basically if you stuff up your salary cap you can buy your way out of it with a team that has cap space getting the pick as well as the over paid player.

How the hell Geelong can do this?? They won the premiership and have $850K sitting around doing nothing + trading in other players. Makes the criticism of the Tigers look stupid.
So Gold Coast are giving cats Bowes and pick 7 and cats take on his contract ?

if that was us doing the deal for bowes and pick 7 after winning a flag, afl would come in over the top and block it

If we can reach a trade with GWS for Hopper, and they chose to keep him, can’t we just sign him as a free agent next year? No incentive for GWS to walk away from the trade
Restricted FA next year - GWS could match it

A DEAL for Greater Western Sydney midfielder Jacob Hopper to land at Richmond hasn't progressed as it emerged the Giants would be open to conversations on two senior players.

The Tigers have secured Tim Taranto in a trade on Monday for picks 12 and 19, but a deal for Hopper remains apart as the Giants search for more than picks 31 and a future first-round selection.

Hopper is contracted for next year but as the Giants push for a greater trade return and also uses this period to clear the decks for its salary cap, it is understood the club would also be open to conversations on Lachie Whitfield and Nick Haynes.

Whitfield is signed for another five years through to the end of 2027 on a lucrative long-term deal, while Haynes has two years to run on his backended contract. Clubs are aware of the possibility of the Giants making salary moves if a Hopper deal doesn't progress.

I don’t get what’s so complicated about this Bowes trade?

He is owed 1.6 mill according to his AFL contract over next 2 seasons. The only way Geelong are spreading that over extra seasons is by offering him more then that. Something like 2.4 mill over 4 years, Bowes gets an extra 800k to reduce his cap hit and Geelong can reduce his yearly salary to 600k. Or the cats can bite the bullet and pay it all in 2 years to get out from under the cap hit. Bowes is not going to change his contract or money owed unless their is an incentive for him.

Also, it’s not pick 7 and Bowes for nothing. It’ll probably cost the cats their first rounder. Suns have said it’s a pick downgrade.

Richmond offer 2 guys 7 year contracts at around 750k a year and the system is broken, top teams shouldnt be allowed to trade for players from other struggling teams.

Cats pay $850k for 2 years to a guy who cant even make it into a struggling teams 1st side and get pick 7 as a cherry and its all ok. I say well played cats but STFU to the media pushing one sided narratives because you have beef with a particular side.
For simplicity….Let’s just say…Pussies pay $1,700,000 for pick 7

Hence GWS asking for a future first for Bruhn

First time I've seen this stated, which does make more sense than 7 alone.

However what do Geelong have that they can give back. Really their current first rounder and future first rounder should be tide up in the Brauhn and Henry deals, which leaves their second rounders which by the time compensation picks and academy/F&S selections are done will be pick 50 or thereabouts.

Inexcusable to be getting rid of a top 10 draft pick for salary cap purposes but at the same time give the likes of Chol a bumper contract last year, Rory Atkins the year before, then trading in guys like Markov, Long and Berry.
