I've noticed that an open training session on Friday the 20/1/12 has been removed on the Hawthorn website. Was hoping to watch them train 2 weeks in a row!

Does anyone know if this session is still going ahead?

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Went along to training this morning and it was great. I'd never been before but will definitely try get along to a few more in the future. I took the camera along and have uploaded a fairly brief album here: Hawthorn Training - Jan 20th

Was a bit carried away with the camera and experience to be able to give much of a report but no doubt someone else that was there can give you a run down. I did notice that Gibbo basically did nothing aside from kicking balls back to groups from the goal square and a light jog around the ground. Hodge ran several laps at alternating intensities and looked very fit.

Seemed to be a fairly light session all round with the guys enjoying themselves and taking lots of shots from the boundaries. Schoenmakers is looking pretty big and fit, had a couple of good marking contests with Buddy and got the front position at times, as you can see from one of the photos he has a decent leap. Amos looks to be enjoying being amongst the team, Cyril was doing as he pleased and Hill effortlessly glides around the ground. When I arrived, Young was doing runs around half the ground and looked to be moving really well. At the end most of the guys went indoors but I noticed the rucks stayed out doing some drills with Monkey and Mitchell worked closely with Shiels and Woodward.

Enjoy the photos, hope some others can provide more details.

Cheers.

Thanks Maybloomed, awesome work.

Gibbo looks like he is channeling Mr. T.
Stones Grimley looks like he is developing well through the upper body, good to see.

Awesome pics, thanks! I took a couple but not worth seeing after yours. Mitch was looking a million bucks, set for a big year i think, his performance in the basketball/footy game has almost earnt him a spot in my DT.

Did anyone see Shane Savage and Wayne Schwass with the boys from the New Zealand Hawks?

Kiwis at Waverley

New Zealand-born Hawk Shane Savage will host eight players from AFLNZ after the Club’s open training session tomorrow at the Ricoh Centre, formerly Waverley Park.

Savage will have a light kick on the oval with his compatriots, who have been living in Melbourne to improve their football skills, before they return home to play in the New Zealand Hawks team pitted against an AIS-AFL Academy squad.

Savage discussing Kurt Heatherley after a light session with some NZ boys. Looks like a big unit, could be a promising player if we pick him up in the draft!
Kurt has just turned 17 on the 1st of Jan. As an international rookie we can put 3 years of development into him and then simply list him, he does not go through the draft (we need a spot on our list). Already 192cm, has a way to go with his kicking but is a natural athlete, hope it all works out and is one of a number of talented kiwis that progress through this innitiative with NZ players.

That's excellent news. Hopefully he can continue to improve and impress the coaching staff and be on our list to develop further. Where abouts is he playing in junior footy? I'm quite excited about a couple of the Kiwi players we have given scholarships to.
