Imagine how ill-thought and unbalanced they'd be if we didn't provide a level of quality for him to aim for.

Bring back JGHornet and Scribe, I say ;)
A question for the VAFA leadership.

Will you investigate Uni Blues total player points for the 2019 Grand Final?

In particular Mr Buchanan? They were in breach of the total cap. They should be stripped of the premiership.

C'mon Hedge, for years you roamed the Roy boys backline as the loose man umpiring the game. You just didn't have a whistle.
There’s a minor difference between providing constructive umpiring suggestions and actually umpiring.

You don’t get paid to make umpiring suggestions as a VAFA half back flanker. 💰

I know , just means extra work finding people . Surely they can get goal umpires , it's not equal
Hey Bedders - you should see how it goes all te way down here in D2 😜😂

Seriously though, all competitions are struggling for umpires and some innovative thinking will be required to make things work.

Are we almost at the stage where we say 2 feild umpires will 'need to be' enough for our games?

Could this support ALL grades better and create more competition/better performance of umpires for higher grades
or
would that mean we would lose umpires who are on the edge to other competitions?

I don't have the answers, but the challenges remain for everyone each week and it will take more than a thank you from Gil to get volunteers to fill the void.

Chump.

Not sure if it happens now or not but maybe the umpires that are club supplied should be paid by the VAFA.

Once again Women's finals have decimated ump numbers even in Premier C , surely they need to recruit
Far far easier said than done. Where do you recruit from?
B Reserves never get umpires these days.
Welcome ideas as to where to get more umpires on board. Is it the pay, Covid, abuse factor or what? I think you will see the demise of the boundary umpire in time for a free kick against the last one who touched it or a ball up 15 meters in.

Lets face it it is harder to find people to do any job in football these days. When was the last time you saw an Umpires Escort? Interchange steward has gone. Several away Clubs don't have a timekeeper for the Reserves (probably not needed now with straight 25 min and a visible time clock).
On 6 occasions this year we have supplied BOTH Reserves umpires. The Club does get a rebate for supplying an umpire. (Not sure if you get a double rebate if you supply both though).

I honestly don't know what the answer is to get Umpires and helpers on board for footy.

(PS I have not umpired other than the odd practice match)

Women have to recruit from female ranks , they want to be equal , but 95% of umps are male . Maybe it's grown too quick

Field umpiring at Prem C and D1 level is quite burdensome on a full-time professional. Have to attend training(s), coaching, contribute to online forums, watch game vision back and self-critique (including in front of the entire group). Possible tribunal attendance, league investigations and constant complaints from clubs mean decisions made in a split second can be assessed and reviewed in a high pressure situation on a weeknight. It's not as simple as rocking up on gameday and blowing a whistle - there's 10-15 hours of work per week that goes into a senior field umpire's job.

Game day you have to deal with clubs whose position in the VAFA hierarchy often doesn't meet their own self-perceptions, so they have a major chip on their shoulder. Players and officials can be downright nasty on the field with occasional highly personal attacks. The players are old boys that are not accustomed to having decisions go against them, so they lash out. I've seen a few field umpires step off the field at half- or full-time shaken this season because of personal attacks during a match. If you report the player, you'd be forced to rehash that matter on a weeknight and it's the umpires word against a player or powerful club. I can see why many long-time fieldies stepped away during the Covid-break and the treatment of umpires has gotten worse since then, not better.
