Some would suggest that Trav hasn't been dropped because it would shatter his confidence.

Still others suggest that continuing to play him in the seniors when he's clearly not thriving is shattering his confidence.

Joseph Heller would have had a field day with those two conflicting ideas.

It appears that he's the quintessential definition of a riddle wrapped in a mystery encapsulated in an enigma.

Nobody is sure what will bring the best out of him.

And that appears to go double for Travis himself.

The poor darling. What's he on again - $450K a year? It's a tough life.

There is no doubt Varcoe can play some good football for Geelong, and I hope he stays, but he faces a big challenge I reckon. He has a pretty fragile body and his attitude has not been right. He has not attracted any interest from other clubs, which gives you a pretty strong guide on where his career is at. Motlop has become the player he threatened to be and spots in the side based on potential output should be going to younger players.

The onus has to be on him to win back the trust of the club. I'd say the odds are stacked against him making a contribution as I think others will go past him but hopefully he proves me wrong.

Varcoe is a talented footballer, who has had terrible luck with injuries, already he has made a great contribution to the club through his Grand Final efforts. I am not denigrating the guy, I just don't believe he has much good football left in him at Geelong.

I think he can still produce good football, but for me the main thing is he has to get treated - and selected - like anyone else. He has been absolutely immune from demotion for so long it's ridiculous. He plays 6 shit games and 1 vaguely passable one and all the fans scream "You see! You see! That's what he brings!".

If it means they have to tell him some harsh realities so be it. When he puts in and is fit and in form he's a very good footballer. He might not put in the work required if he figures he doesn't have to.

That is incorrect. A number of clubs were interested, and that's the last we have heard other than TV saying he wants to stay.

I stand corrected. But point remains Geelong were very keen to move him on. Given we rarely talk about any trades for our players and then this appeared in the Herald Sun.... Geelong were going fishing. Varcoe has a contract and given his other issues, a move to Sydney was clearly not a good fit.

My post was actually simply intending to point out the incongruous nature of the two conflicting viewpoints. Not actually suggesting that I have a great deal of sympathy with either perspective.

the article that appeared in the hun was by jon ralph and it was basically his opinion. there were no quotes from anyone from the gfc (or other clubs for that matter) or from trav.

it was an article fishing for views and it has created 34 pages of discussion on bf.

Varcoe is one player I would really love to be wrong about, I will say my opinion on him performing at Geelong has nothing to do with what I saw from on the field this year. Shoulder reconstructions are huge jobs, and it was number 2. It was unrealistic to expect anything from him.

I don't believe it is anything to do with confidence - at least whichever team he plays in. I was fortunate enough to have a chat with him at the Season Launch a couple of years ago, and he was incredibly frustrated at the injury setbacks he had after doing his shoulder against Ireland. He struck me as the sort of guy who was quite willing to play in the twos to build match fitness.

I just think this year the club decided to roll the dice towards the end of the year as a fit and firing TV makes a big difference to the side. His explosive run and carry, his run downs and tackling are game changers. But the dice didn't roll our way, he just wasn't quite fit enough and he didn't find his touch to hit the heights we know he can hit. He gets that back and all of a sudden, we become a very hard team to beat again.

He did not make it up. There was exasperation with Varcoe from within the club. Nothing to do with form. Even Jon Ralph must have picked that up. Most people close to the club in Geelong will tell you the same thing.

I, like you, really hope that the answer is simply improved fitness and better touch.

Certainly both of these aspects seemed to be noticeably deficient in his games later in the season.

Same club yes; not the same players though.

Clearly, though unless we want to be lowering ourselves to the standards of remembering what so and so said about such and such a player in October of the previous year and dragging it back up to make ourselves feel good to a bunch of internet friends then I think that's a bit sad. Which was the point of my post. We follow Geelong, yes have an opinion and spirited debate, if you want to 1-up and revisit old posts over bold predictions then go fight it out with the rest of the rabble on an open forum.

There are always going to be disagreements. Just the way it is.

This thread is a case study in "a bit sad".

Rest assured, I personally won't be wasting any time dredging up this thread in future. But if anyone else has the time and inclination, they have every right to pick over this rancid carcass of a thread.
