On the whole cameras discussion.

I got told YEARS ago that the cameras on the west gate bridge can’t catch you for speeding because the movement in the bridge makes it impossible to accurately judge speed. An engineer told me this and it sort of broadly sounds plausible but I’ve never been able to confirm it.

you know what you have to do...

I was driving the other day, turned into a street and there was a woman with her back to the traffic, standing in the middle of the road taking a photo up the street. It didn't make much sense to me.

She steps off the road, I drive past, I look in the rear view mirror and she had gone back to the footpath and was running up the hill.

So the whole point of the photo was no doubt to take a picture of the hill to post on social media that she ran up it FFS.

Feels more like a gripe with social media than traffic?

This article confirms what you were told. That information could be out of date but the Westgate Bridge cameras don't show up on the current road safety camera map.

I always assumed they weren’t operating as they are old rust buckets and not upgraded like all the other fixed cameras out there. Obviously just used as a deterrent.

They tried a different style of camera near me for a while, it obviously never passed testing and never went live. But they left it in place for a couple of years and people kept slowing down for it. Then the vandals did their work on it so they removed it.

It made me wonder how the camera notifications for GPS are set. I regularly travel under the Princes Freeway/Point Wilson road bridge. I get a notification each time although the cameras haven't been there for a couple of years. They show up on the Victoria road safety camera map so maybe GPS companies are relying on government data - which may be false. You can see where the cameras used to be.

I’ve always assumed they were set by people driving past. Although that’s the apps on phones and I’m not sure about GPS devices.

Although I’ve noticed Google maps has added them in as mobile speed cameras and they’re always miles off their actual location.

Yep, the cameras were never commissioned and the equipment was taken out in 2010 when the bridge was widened. Only the poles and casing were left, presumably for the psychological impact. It works because I still back off to 80 when I drive past them even though I know the boxes are empty.

What time of day are you driving the Westgate bridge that you can even get up to 80km?

Is it just me.

Or are the comments to all posts on Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page full of dumb bogans with lotsa big opinions on things but just flat out don't understand road rules.

I only watch the YouTube monthly compilations, but what I find funniest about a lot of dash cam videos posted is quite often it’s the dash cam driver themselves driving like an idiot to create a dangerous situation.

That pretty much sums up that "community"
A dashcam is a backup safety device, those weirdos make it part of their personality.

Like Eddiesmith I occasionally watch the YouTube videos, mainly to laugh at the dashcammers documenting their own stupidity and arrogance.

I still laugh because someone posted a guy going the wrong way round a roundabout here, and it was a plumber we sometimes contract at work , we all saw it after i sent it LOL.

So how many of you lot reverse into parking spots at supermarkets and shopping centres?
I'm a front in , reverse out guy. ( though if i see a double spot i sometimes drive through ).
My logic.
1: It takes more precision to reverse in, so i can front in quicker . its easy to reverse out, just wait until no cars are coming.
2: If i want to use my rear hatch, if i front in, no-one can block access to my rear door.

Reasons i can think of to reverse in.
1: You are about to commit a crime and want to leave FAST .
2: You have a car with park guidence in the reverse camera, and just love using it.
3: You are a sociopath , and like blocking everyone else while you reverse in 3 times ( meaning you don't have the car from 2)

No doubt there are other reasons, i'm open to hearing them since i keep seeing more and more reversers, and most of them outwardly seem to be type 3.

I generally drive in forward but there are some situations where reversing in makes more sense.

At home I always reverse in

At supermarket & shopping centre parking it's front in majority of the time, especially if I'm planning on shopping as I want easy access to my boot to put the bags in - I don't want to be trying to move the trolley or carry bags between vehicles

If I'm just running in for something quick, going for coffee type thing and I see a double park I'll drive though

One place I'll occasionally reverse is the train station when it's quiet and I'm not needing to reverse between vehicles - they rarely have drive through spaces & can be easier to see when getting out if there's a lot of foot traffic like after a football match

I've got no reversing cameras on my car, so I'm used to not relying on them, which then means when I'm driving a car with then I rarely use them and drive as if they aren't there for the most part - they can be useful for extended vision beyond vehicles sticking out or if reverse sensors pick up something
