We have (I hope)…boy called Toby…just can’t get him on the park. 😯

But your point is well made. Getting someone tall is easy - getting a good ruckman seems to be hard (or too expensive)
Young 202cm ruckman at the Falcons kicked 3.2 from 17 disposals and 18 HO's on the weekend. Didn't catch the game.

The Pheonix tap to Dempsey, one hand grab and spin through traffic for a snap. Glorious

Another snapshot of just what Ollie can bring. I get that it's going to take plenty of time. But he is a real talent, and it will eventually translate consistently at the highest level.

Firstly…clever pun - not lost on me.

Secondly I agree that time will build confidence and consistency - and actually I think small “tastes of AFL” might be a bit counterproductive for him. If he can string half a dozen games like yesterday together in the VFL he might accelerate his development and be able to translate it into the AFL? I watched the replay last night and his game was outstanding.

The big thing for me was he had his contest back in the air that I reckon he had lost. Maybe it was confidence or learning his new HHF role but he needs to be leaping at the ball to be at his best. But I also say his contest at ground ball which I haven’t seen. If he can develop that he will be much more flexible in terms of where he could play. His x factor (like this snap and the one handed pack mark) is well established - but I am hopeful he can knuckle down now and build competitiveness and consistency. Happy for that to be in the twos until he is ready

Love it - first we have to sign the lad for another few years.

As for Danger v Bartel, it should never be forgotten that JB won 3 flags, a Norm Smith and a Brownlow. He didn't have Danger's athletic gifts but he was arguably a better footballer.
I loved Jimmy as a player but I don’t think he was a better footballer than Dangerfield.

Imagine if Danger had played in the 2007-2011 team!?

I kinda get a bit sad hearing when a Falcon's tearing it up, because unless we have mega-luck literally fall in our laps (a la Jhye Clark - and Conway to a lesser extent, but most clubs don't draft young rucks unless they're practically freaks), we're almost never in the running for them.

Half a dozen games at senior level has made him a different player
Or certainly building the confidence to be the player he can be? Right from the start he contested in air (miles to early first one!) and on the ground. Personally I would like to see him now play half a dozen games in a row in the VFL as “him” (as the NBA basketballers say) with the objective of consistently dominating…

If AFL team are making finals by then, he may have to then suck it up in VFL for rest of the year….if they are not then he can come in for last half dozen games to build on VFL form and into 2024

Encouraging signs…first full game for 6 weeks

He is on a pretty rapid development path. Will be a player

Watched the replay finally...effen geoblock shit...

Dempsy, Foster, Osca Murdoch, Clohesy were all really good.
Clohesy got mugged head high bump and no free given but still added to the game after that.
Whyte did ok too but not as well as others.

Keep pumping games into all of them and i dont see any of the above not being around next year.

Was Riccardi rested?

And Naismith didnt wow me.

GO Catters

Osca is being given a mini preseason so to speak to build some more fitness and a little bit more strength.

Our VFL boys have actually done really well to be ahead of parity despite not much help from the AFL squad and a pretty inexperienced VFL list. With some winnable games coming up we're right in the hunt to sneak into finals.

There's something to be said for getting the kids to perform as the main man at VFL level. I'd like to get an extra game or 2 of AFL footy into Dempsey in the next couple of months. But getting Dempsey, Knevitt, Conway, Neale, etc to have a clean run at VFL finals would be a really positive thing.

I'm not on the Neale train as much as others. Looked like a good prospect to develop into a ruck when he first arrived. We have tried to develop him into a forward but not sure his game will translate. Looks good on the lead and a straight kick but don't think he has the tricks to make it at AFL level (I hope I'm wrong).
Your hopes will need realised.

Outside of a couple of thrashings, we have stood up exceptionally well this year.
With only Ham as an AFL experienced VFL listed player (wasn’t doing much anyway and is now out long term), no recognised ruck for much of the season, along with our injury list, it's been fun watching this team develop this year.
Let’s hope we don’t fall off a cliff like we did in the 2nd half of last year. That was embarrassing.

I hope you are wrong too.

Frankly for now we just need to see him get back and play VFL so we can all see whether he can develop. I do think he has the attributes (speed, competitiveness, althetetic) to be an AFL footballer. I do agree that his strong suit is that fast lead and that he will need to improve contested marking etc….but I think something to work with over next couple of years.

Yep. I think he needs to add more to his game. Can he work hard up and down the ground, Crash packs or present as an option when we are struggling to clear from defence? Maybe he can but to me he only really looks good when leading out from the goal square and getting it speared onto his chest

They played well on Sunday. All seemed to know their role and what to do under pressure, compared to matches earlier in the season. As you say, it wasn’t as if they have been reinforced by a lot of AFL players.

Coaching beginning to make its mark?
Good point. I think they are being coached better (imho). The team itself is actually weaker this year in terms of afl listed players on the ground each week. I haven’t done the maths but in 22 we had a lot of afl listed players around (including Dal, Higgins and most injured players came back for a week or two via vfl). This year very scarce

Given his coaching career thus far, Corrigan looked like a very good get from the start. Does appear to be proving that way now. And hopefully the Bankers can kick on to be more and more competitive across the second half of the season, with the possibility that significant AFL-listed reinforcements could eventually end up joining the 22 each week.
