One issue these days that I see in junior football in Perth is the ability of kids being able to move junior clubs.

A kid leaves his local team in local team to go and play in a stronger team at another club 20kms from where he lives, then a few more do the same thing and his original team does not have enough players to field a team or if they do it is a weakened team because their best players have left.

Some of the strong clubs cap the amount of players they have in each team and how many teams they have per grade and send out registration links to the kids they want first.

25 years ago you basically had to play for the local club your suburb was zoned too and if you wanted to move you had to apply to league to have a transfer approved.

Now you can sign for whatever club you like.

They allow them to move so they don’t hurt their feelings.
And for some reason it seems very important for parents their child wins junior premierships.

So much for Equalization.

Its like Victorian zones in the 1970s and 1980s. Thats where all the decent kids went to the best clubs, regardless of zones.

I am always frustrated that opening round always ignores SA and WA teams. Shows the AFL priorities.

Vic
NSW and QLD teams

SA and WA teams
You are sort of correct.... I have posted this before and will again.

AFL priorities are these groups in order...

1. NSW and QLD sides
2. Victorian sides that play home games at MCG
3. Geelong
4. Victorian sides that play home games at docklands.
5. SA and WA sides.
6. when they come to the comp... Tasmania, NT and ACT teams

Agree with 1 and 2 - sort of - depends how you're bracketing Carlton and Essendon.

Why do you have WA and SA teams below the small Vic teams? There's no gather round to keep them happy. There's no way better NGA zone to keep them happy.

Does anyone know the current Father/Son requirement imposed on each state? I know it's currently 200 for the SANFL and 25 (attended) for the VFL.

For ALL clubs, a player is eligible if his father played 100 or more senior games for the respective club.

Adelaide have picked up Jarman, Edwards and Welsh as sons of Adelaide Crows players who played 100 games.

But despite being in the AFL for almost 35 years now, Adelaide still get to also claim access to kids whose father had nothing to do with and played 0 games for the Adelaide Crows under the father/son rule.

I think our first official "Father Son" pick was Max Michalanney in 2022 (using the points system, etc) The others mentioned were picked up in the rookie draft, so everyone had fair access to them.

As for the SANFL stipulations,
We are the team for ALL South Australians. Its why we wear our state colours.
So limiting us to 4 local sides (& 200 games) for our fist 20 odd years is more of a penalty than a present.

And this is where it all goes wrong.

This competition is a club competition NOT a state representative competition.

So when you say for 'all South Australians', already the sentiment is not club but state. Vics don't care about state, hell if Ade plays the blose, bombouts or tigs, guess who I'm barracking for?

We barrack for our clubs not our state, if it were soo, then we'd barrack for state, but this comp ain't that comp.

The sooner non vics accept that the competition is for club and not state, the sooner the angst will dissipate.

Yeah, no one really gives a **** who you barrack for in those instances, you cant influence the result.
Its your fellow Vics at VaFL house and their gameday employees that control the narrative.
Angst, I wouldn't call it angst. Sure, theres a few weeks in late August and through September when the usual suspects get the rub but I wouldnt call the response from outside the 'heartland' angst, more of a united sigh of, there goes Vic integrity again.

Its why we only let you have a tiny bit of the country to preside over, you simply cant be trusted to manage anything bigger than a cheat comp game no one else in the World cares for on a postage stamp parcel of land that you've run broke.

Victoria, The Little Man Syndrome State.

No, it's called geography, but what do I know, I don't live there.

Yet your angst about it is showing.

Remind me which team was it that tried playing games in China, and what state was that team from?

Someone had to attempt to take the game global.
Last time you clowns tried it your messiah coach Clarko went full coward punch and embarrassed the nation.

Just cant trust Vicco's to get much right im afraid.

Port: Bloody Vic Bias. All this travel is really unfair. It's not just the half hour flight. It's sleeping in hotels. It's not getting the full recovery. It's the time to check in, etc...

By the way, we've organised to play a game in Shanghai.

Why I have SA and WA clubs below the smaller Vic sides like Bulldogs, Saints and kangaroos?

It's simple. I remember the 2003 to 2017 period where eagles and dockers played home games at Subiaco oval. The ground only held 43,000 seats.

I specifically said from 2003 onwards because dockers made finals In 2003 and they averaged 30,000 people per home game while eagles home games were sold out.

My 1st dockers home game was 2011 between dockers and good coast. 28,000 rocked up and I paid $55.80 for my ticket. Dead certain seats at Docklands were not charged $55 a game.

AFL knows Port and crows average 40,000 a game at Adelaide oval. The AFL knows the SA and WA clubs make money.

If it's a Western Bulldogs vs Fremantle Dockers in the 2025 grand final, who do you think the AFL wants to win it? Bulldogs likely as it will spike up their crowds and membership.

Not to mention strengthen the strong hold state in Footy

AFL are playing the loooonngg game, not sure why people think it is just a 10 year thing.

Auskick programs to get kids, more interest at schools, then as they grow up and have kids themselves you build the base which will take a generation.

South moved to Sydney early 1980s, early to mid 90s they were still battling. But now comfortably are locked in.

Plenty of room for two teams in both Sydney and Sth East QLD. It was always going to be a long term play. Things like opening round, academies are all part of the push
I agree AFL are playing the long game. I assure you grassroots footy has grown in Queensland in he last 10 years

I think it's inevitable that country and suburban clubs continue to fold. Just not sure if there's anything the AFL can do about it. Sports clubs have become less of a community focal point. To me it's a cultural shift well beyond the AFL
Yeah I am sure that is gonna go down well.

Amazing that the AFL is a multi billion dollar business yet they are happy to kill off the local leagues.

The AFL would love to weaken and kill off the SANFL and WAFL.

After what the AFL has done to Tassie to rebrand that league AFL Tasmania , this is poor form.

The moment the AFL rebrands the SANFL as AFL South Australia, I will be officially done with this sport

Home club and not the AFL is in charge of the gate and admission price. WA clubs have a two club control over their market and maximise gate receipts due to the lack of competition by overcharging their fans and ensuring it stays as a a two club town as well as having ensured the new stadium wasn't too big.

Funny that. Yet not many Victorians want a 3rd WA or 4th WA club in the AFL.

There is 7 million people in Victoria for 10 clubs. So 700,000 on average per club.

WA has 2.8 million. That will hit 3 million easily by the end of this decade

Anyone says it's not viable or can't get new fans or win over some eagles or dockers fans is bull sh**

It would if been perfect to bring this 3rd WA club in 2014ish with Subiaco oval being used.

You're just talking utter shite. It's WA footy commission that are saying no to another club in WA at the request of WCE and Freo. They want to ensure that the WA clubs have the advantage of wealth.

Well you know that the WA football commission is only a branch in a certain tree.

WAFC is basically part of the WA government.
