I thought I would feature a couple of colts matches this weekend as itlooks like a really good round with teams nearing full strength. Fingers crossed that streamer provide a high res live stream. It can be hit and miss. I don't think they understand how many more viewers they would get from around Australia if they just made sure they used decent cameras, provided 1080 quality res and at least matched cricket streams from third world countries - which are miles clearer - I guess because they have pride in their product. And yes that's free also. Having said that, I will continue to promote streamer.

Gerreyn and Smith dominating in the ruck for their respective sides but with Gerreyn going forward and causing headaches for the Black and White defence. Medium size forward Sebastian Hewitt (2023 State 16's is giving Gerreyn a chop out in the ruck). However Swans have Cotellessa, Harvey, Kelly, Martinson in the midfield while West have Wooden who is trying to beat all four and not doing a bad job.

Good to see outstanding 2025 prospect Jamie Sidebottom finally on the field. He is certainly a no-nonsense Sidebottom style of player in the best traditions of the family pedigree.

Yeah I agree. Wooden is probably a WAFL star rather than an AFL athlete. A bit of a chip off the old block.

I must say that was an enjoyable duel between overager Evan Smith (SD/15 disposals/35 hit outs) and Kayle Gerreyn (WP/25 disposals/19 hit outs/2 goals).

Smith, who many will remember was a draft chance last year - and still is as an overager - was dominant early but Gerreyn started to get on top with some strong marks and incredible agility and work at ground level. He also spent some time up forward and was a major threat kicking 2.3 and finishing with 8 marks.

I've finally come to the conclusion that Gerreyn - despite being only 199cm - has the best ruck/tap craft I've seen in many years for a guy this age. His palming work actually often goes directly to a team mate, not just in the general direction. For this reason I feel that an AFL club can feel fairly confident that he can split his time evenly between ruck and key forward.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that this bloke is anywhere near as good as Polly Farmer (very few are) but he surely must have watched some highlights or be a distant relative of the great Indigenous West Australian.

Like him or loathe him, Sam Newman idolised the great Polly Farmer, as a footballer and a man and some of his tributes to Pol are quite emotional. I wonder if he would see any similarities between the two. He is better qualified than most to know.

It's worth keeping an eye on Smith also. He is developing nicely now. As with many big blokes draft year is one year too soon. But he's in this year's mix I reckon and has also played two league games for the Black Ducks.

It's important because it pits two 2024 WA draft contenders who are ruck opponents. Evan Smith (SD) v Kayle Gerreyn (WP). Those two clubs have never liked each other since Dennis Cometti and John Todd were coaching on opposing sides.

It is unlikely that any side can topple state squad loaded Claremont for the 2024 premiership but if one team can maybe it is Swan Districts.

No team can match Swans mids with Blake kelly**, Otis Harvey, Luke Cotellessa and Chayse Martinson. So much so that Max York and Lucas Andrews will be seconded to roles on the wings and flanks.

Last week Kelly (35 disp), Cotellessa (26), Harvey (22) and Martinson (24) dominated West Perth. Even the Monts with Van der Struyf, Boxshall, Wildberger, Hayes and perhaps Davis will be pressed to compete with that. However, Claremont have Davis, Riddle, Hayes, Angove, Curtin, Willis, Boxshall, Van Der Struyf, Douglas, Banfield, Dennis who are in the WA state 18's squad plus guys like Ravenhill and overager Sibosado.

Yeah I’m a big fan of what I have seen, seems to be a player that is made for AFL footy. He’s like a Bailey Fritsch that can also go into the midfield and get 30.
