Not sure who would swap a KPD for a player like walker or ellard.

Austin is the only player and bringing him in now is a risk as he hasnt played AFL football for a long time. If he isnt good enough then we need to sacrifice a good player to get a good key backman..but who is proven and available? Plus who would come to carlton over a mega deal at gold coast?

What about throwing Setanta down back? yes he cant kick and his decision making at times can be woeful. BUT, he has height and strength, can match any KPF with pace and he would be ok body on body...im just thinking if we are playing against a team with two or three KPFs, he may be an option. Food for thought...

Setanta was doing ok down back if you ask me. Barry Hall said that he could become a good defender after playing on him. His kicking improved big time towards the end of his time down back and would love to see him back there again.

what about going after Campbell Brown from Hawthorn. He's out of contract and apparently we will have room in our salary cap this year, maybe we could go close to matching GC's bid

When do people think we will genuinely be challenging for a premiership? I'm going to say that we will have a crack from about 2012-2014. That's enough time to grab develop a kid from this years draft, especially if the rest of our team keep improving.
I just hope we don't waste our picks on pointless trades again.

Whilst another quality backman would be nice, what we really need is that extra 1-2 years of developing the bodies / experience of our entire list.
This is where the improvement will come from. From getting our average games played total from the current 70 to 100+
We have the core list, just need to add the time and the natural development will happen. 2012 - 2014 is that time.

Whilst there is no denying our list has room for improvement, there are many other clubs in a similar position.
We need to add a quality key position player to our team & two or three players with improved skills before we are a geninue top 4 side.
The other concern with your 2012-2014 projection is that probably two of our top 5 players Judd/Waite will be in that 29-30 age range, so we still have some work to do in terms of list improvement.

To be fair, too... key forwards in 1995 weren't Riewoldt size/speed (Nick OR Jack...) either.

Your right lets see who the key forwards were in 1995:

1. Ablett - Geel (122 goals)
2. Lockett - Sydney (110 goals)
3. S Rocca - North (93 goals)
4. G Lyon - Melb(77 goals)
5. S Loewe - St Kilda (76)
6. J Dunstall - Haw (66)
7. W Carey - Adel
8. S kernahan - carl
9. J Longmire - north
10. R osborne - collingwood

Ablett, Lyon and Osborne are the only ones in that list that werent massive forwards in an age where being able to mark and actually kick a goal was more important than possessions and athleticism for a forward.

Ablett would bury Riewoldt as a forward if matched at the same time in their careers and the guy was like a thousand. Lockett probably would just ignore most of the leagues current defenders and run straight through them as would Rocca.

The reliance on run and carry over pure defence and pure offence has been detrimental to the skill level of the game.
