List Mgmt. Welcome Campbell Chesser (Pick 14, 2021 National Draft)

Presumably if the powers to be can admit Ginbey is not a natural mid, this will mean they have come to the same realisation for Chesser.

Not knocking him, but being a genuine effective AFL mid for the elite of the elite and that ain't Chesser (same goes for Duggan).

Not sure he's got the productivity in him to be a midfielder. Even at WAFL level.
Sometimes I feel like we should play some of them in ammo’s for a game or two. Let him feel what it’s like to rack ip 40+ touches in a game a couple of times, then bring him back to wafl and see if he can get ~30 touches, before back to afl

I almost see Chess as more a Bailey Smith type, the power-running, long kicking HFF.

I'm not sure he's the accumulator type

Bailey smith averaged 29 touches a game in his age 22 season (noting he turned 22 in December…)

Without checking would say Chesser hasn’t touched 29 in a single game.

I think Chesser is real confidence player, if he gets a good run at it and the team starts to get a few wins and a bit of confidence, I could picture him on a wing.

He needs a big year or he's probably gone. Oh well, that's drafting. Hough and Williams seem to be successful from the draft at least. A few of the other mids taken around Chesser's selection (Sinn, Erasmus) also seem to be duds, so I guess it just didn't work out that year.

With Simmo not around anymore at least he'll no longer keep getting games due to favouritism. Was dropped for the first time this season in Schoey's first game in charge. He'll have to earn his spot.
Surely he will need to rack it up at WAFL level before being considered.

Getting 6 quality players in this draft means Chess doesn't have to make it anymore. Will just be a bonus if he does.

Chesser can be easily replaced at the next draft. It's all on him this season. Good luck to the kid.

We thought Chesser was quality when he was drafted too. Chances are 2-3 of the players we drafted this year wont make it. That is just part of the draft.

I think Chesser was drafted to be a Bailey Smith type player. Explosive, good size, likes to run with the ball. He shoes glimpses of that type of player but the reality is that he hasnt shown he's good enough. He's a Bailey Smith from Temu factory seconds no refunds offered.

Smith is a rather rare combination of attributes in that he can play as an inside mid. Bevo has just ****ed him over and I bet he stars big time at the Cats.

Sinn/Chesser were basically the same player at that point. At least Erasmus dominates the WAFL in the midfield and should crack Freo's side at some point even if its as the 15th guy picked off a fwd flank.

I don't watch Erasmus much but from what people have said, it's his lack of pace that's the problem. With Bolton in the team, I can't see him even getting a spot on HFF, so I'd say this is his last year for Freo at least.

He's a bit like Waterman 2019-2021 in that he's better than WAFL standard but not up to AFL yet. 100% would grab him for the right price. I think he could be a pretty good general fwd/3rd tall if left there.

Chesser meanwhile does mostly nothing. I think he provides a bit of running power as he gets on the end of long chains of possessions but we are usually in a position to score from these anyway.
We could carry him as a guy who cant find the pill if he had regular big defensive moments like a tackle or spoil or even shutdown ability🤷‍♂️

I've heard his kicking is not the most accurate/penetrating....perhaps like Elijah Tsatas at the bombers?

Yes, but by the time those players don't make it, we'll have more players. We've hit the stage of the rebuild where the players who don't make it will be replaced in the draft as the ones that don't make it get delisted.

Chess was drafted at a time where we had to hit every player to spring back quickly. We didn't. Now we don't have to hit every player and we will just start climbing naturally because we have prospects developing in all positions, with only the ruck looking a little anaemic.

We are well placed for Tasmania entering the comp.

As much as i'd like this to instantly be true, we can't claim anything from this draft as a success other than us being happy with our draft haul.

All 6 of them could end up being spuds for all we know at this stage.

Yeah, the fact we were able to draft all our targets (bar Boxhall) doesn't mean a lot given we also traded down to target ... Chesser.

One thing working against how much time Chesser has to prove himself is the change in list manager/football department etc. The people who made the decision to draft him are no longer at the club. So nobody in a decision making role has to bring themselves to admit they made a mistake and wasted the pick if he gets moved on. That would have bought him an extra year or two if it had been the case.

I don't understand why Erasmus or Brodie are still at Freo. What did Freo say to them to dissuade them from asking for trades? If i was either of them and was in a position where i was good enough to get a game in some teams but just not the team that i was at i would ask for a trade.

Point remains though that we have tended to get a bit too caught up in obsessiveness over first round picks on this board, because we didn’t have too many throughout the 2010s and 2020s.

Traded a heap out and had a few mid teens picks fail. Thing is, this happens to every team all the time.

We have tended to think that our entire success hinges on our first rounders but it doesn’t really

Brodie - nobody wants him, especially on the contract he is on. Far too slow on the spread and no defensive pressure with the ball in transition.
Erasmus - i think there would have been some interest even though he has been unimpressive so far, but he probably fell on the site of staying to repay the faith. He also said in the media a week ago that he chose to stay as it was the harder option because he needs to get into a strong midfield, and wants to prove himself rather than taking the easier way out. Easy to say that but it often backfires and you are left in the magoos to rot - Dev Robertson a case in point.
