List Mgmt. Welcome Elijah Hewett (Pick 14, 2022 National Draft)

If the behaviour issues were substantial, I suspect our club would know as much about them as any club.
Absolutely zero concerns off field. His brother is/was captain of the Swan Districts colts team, he comes from a strong family environment, any supposed issues were a nothing-burger. If anything his leadership will be an asset long term.

I would take the underperformance rumour with a heavy grain of salt. He struggled for a bit with recovery from a bad dose of Covid as reported in the media.

Had a feeling it would play out this way, but still super stoked to see Elijah joining our club!

Have had discussions with people who are adamant that the club has instructed him to underperform this year to ensure he fell their way.
Unfortunately someone at the club forwarded that email to the entire playing group by mistake.

Great pickup.

Essendon had an in principle deal for 17 from Sydney hence all their ******* around at pick 14.
So not only did we get a good player but we also
• Scuppered Essendons plans
• And Sydney’s sort of
• Who then butt****ed GWS
• And reamed Hawthorn

All because O’Brien is a cagey ****er that doesn’t give much away and was more than happy for everyone to think we were targeting Allan or Jefferson. But not Hewett

Did your club have intel we were taking Hewett?

Until I had the info about Essendon and Sydney I fully expected Hewett to make it to our third pick even though i have him top 5 on talent in this draft.

this just doesn’t happen. Can be harmful to a kids growth for them to be trying to Manipulate how they play a game

And as if a club tells a player a year out to underperform. Who knows what draft picks we were going to have

There's a lot of hearsay and rumour thrown around when it comes to draftees.

I can't speak for everyone but if I was a young bloke looking like I was going to land at the pointy end of the draft and a club told me to underperform I'd tell them to go **** themselves. There aren't huge official draft bonuses in the AFL compared to say American codes, but you're much more likely to get locked into a long-term deal in your first year if you're a top-five pick in comparison to say you are pick #15 (even if that's because the club knew the reasons).

Is it just me, or does anyone get Daniel Kerr vibes from Hewett?

Just his poise with ball in hand, the leap, the burst and side step.

Speaks really well, so happy to have him at the club.

I see what you are saying, I get more Shuey vibes - but of course no 2 players are ever identical so he can be a hybrid of those guys.

What I love from his highlights is that he is genuinely 2-sided. A lot of players may be passable on their opposite foot (or think they are and use it when they are actually not that proficient at it....), but he seems to be almost as good on his left as his right.

With excellent agility, good speed and the ability to kick off both feet he will develop into a player who is able to find time at AFL level (that may happen quickly, or take a year to two). Looks like he can play forward too - so might be able to fill a slot there early on with stints in the middle.

Is it just me or does Tom Barrass always looks different off the field than on it?
