Maybe the club doesnt see Petch as a long term prospect.
He may not be.

But he has the potential to be. They do not.

There’s only one way to see, or to make it happen.

He has played 55 games and less than a handful have been anything above average….

He has the potential to play the odd great game, 5 over the top goals v port, that game against st Kilda but he has a limited football brain , needs a good body of good form and not break down every two games to force his way in….

Half back might be his best spot but there isn’t a spot for him there atm.

Doesnt seem to have much footy iq with positioning and being in the right place to receive and use his pace.

And doesnt get much of his own ball.

And like you said gets injured constantly.

But there's no better time to give him a run at it than right now. Give him a block of 5 or 6 games as the main small forward and see how he handles it. I think we learn and gain nothing by playing Clark and West ahead of him this week.

The reality is Clarke and West will get a bit of the ball and Petch probably won’t. Petch has been there long enough to have grand children. He can’t play and it’s time the club and its fans accepted it.
He can’t even rack up 20 possessions in a WAFL game.
It’s not as if he has not been given time or chances, he has had numerous chances.
I have actually felt for the guy for years now as the club has sold him a lie on his talent. It’s not fair on him.
Should have been delisted two years ago in my opinion.

They aren't, or shouldn't, be playing the same position though.

Petch will probably get his chances in this next block of games and his destiny is in his own hands now.

If he can’t make an impact or gets injured again then I think we’ve seen enough.
If younger kids go past him then that makes it even worse.

I’m not in a position to be able to determine how much a niggling injury can impact a player, but I’ve seen nothing ever from Petch to suggest he goes over and above.

Petch was showing himself to be an asset to the team last year, especially late in the year e.g GC game.
His main issue was continually getting injured.

Why the selection panel think it’s a good idea to play West, Clark, LEdwards and Culley in a team lacking its regular small forwards and pace is known only to them.

Playing as a sub doesn’t usually allow a player to work his way into the game.

He’ll get a good stretch of games soon enough. The club have gone to him quite a lot over the journey, and with no Cripps and Ryan it’s only a matter of time.

This non selection is not a referendum on his future, though what he does with his block of games when selected might well be.

Why not now though, assuming he’s fit?

With team balance in mind I think it’s a bizarre choice.

I don’t fully understand it for this week either. We’re very mids heavy. But I don’t read it as his papers have been stamped and it’s all done, he’ll get plenty of burn this year.

Gary Rohan is a premiership player. You have players with ability then you try to maximise them.

I am a Petch fan. Anyone who accuses him of being a one trick pony hasn't watched him enough.

I can live with Long taking his spot, that makes sense to me. Cripps and Ryan are automatic ins and SPS has been in good form so if Long pushes Petch out, I get it.

But I really don't understand why he wasn't recalled after such a good WAFL game, and with Cripps and Ryan both out.

There must be more to it. Maybe he isn't at full fitness, maybe he isn't playing his role in the WAFL side, maybe he isn't following the new game plan, maybe he is the ideal sub. Maybe his ideal sub is toasted.

Eh, I don't get it

His non selection may be based on his injury history. He may have to achieve certain goals at WAFL intensity before they sign his hamstrings up to AFL level. Orrr, they may want him to show multiple good weeks of form before selecting him because he seems to injure himself every single time he starts playing well.

Or perhaps the selection committee, like many posters here, don't rate him.
