Matera was a natural and unique footy player.
Have we seen anyone quite like Matera since, with that burst speed, swervability and goal sense?
I seriously doubt Petch can be 'trained' to be like Matera?
But he does have some attributes that could be developed into a handy and consistent role, as long as he doesn't list-clog or prevent another more natural footy player a shot.

He was performing quite well-or heading in the right direction before Covid, with still the occasional brain farts.
Like some other players he had an interrupted season - let's hope they really take him aside and drill him with forward/wing smarts and shots on the run/tackling etc.
Even Jaydyn Stephenson went downhill in 2020..
It was a tough year to judge anyone too harshly, there's been a bit of collateral damage or fallout throughout most clubs? (coaches included)

Others on here have said it and i agree, The best position i think for Petch is on the wing. Use his pace to provide an option out of defence. Fingers crossed with enough development he can be like Peter Matera.
Nothing worse than a winger with poor ball use though.........

Haha, you can’t use Peter Matera in any conversation with Petch.
Petch would not be a star on the wing in A grade amateurs. He can’t find the ball in the WAFL. Matera is in the top 5 players the club has ever seen.
I just don’t get what the club and people see that Petch has to offer? No footy brain, poorly skilled, no awareness, no toughness. He is a quick runner and that’s it. Like any player if you give them enough chances once in a blue moon he may have a day out with 15 disposals and 3-4 goals. He has had enough games to find out what it’s all about.
I don’t blame him though, not his fault the club is willing to keep paying him.

Haha, NO...there was Judd and there was Matera aka Roo!
Similar but two different sports cars inmho...
Unless Judd could launch raking goals on the run from the wing?

With no offence intended to Matera but Judd creating goals and scoring opportunities from stoppages was something to behold.
Burst speed and swervability is exactly how I would describe Judd as an Eagle.
If you have a look at the video below you will see many examples of this. Early on in this video there is two goals against Port Adelaide that exemplify this, or the two goals in succession against Fremantle, or the goal against Melbourne at the six and a half minute mark, or the goal against the Bulldogs at about the 7 minute mark, or the goal against Port Adelaide straight after that, or the goal against Port Adelaide at the 8 and a half minute mark, or the goal against Carlton at the 10 and a half minute mark, or the goal against Collingwood at the 12 minute mark, or the goal against Richmond at the 12 minute 45 second mark, or the goal against the Bulldogs at the 14 minute mark. Fair to say he was exceptional at long range goals on the burst.
In fact his modus operandi was bursting from a stoppage/congestion from the centre to pin point goals. This is about as valuable a contribution as you can get from a inside/outside midfielder.
I'm just not sure what you have to criticism him about, even in comparison to Matera (who I regard as the best Eagles player to this point in history).

No sweat, can't believe you devoted so much time and detail to this lighthearted pitch?
I haven't criticised Judd, I just prefer Matera over Judd, personal opinion-am not going to devote pages on analysing it. You like Judd, great! Enjoy!

Matera in the modern game would be devastating, could kick 50 + on either foot with deadly accuracy and at top pace. Terrific over head and no better player with the ball below his knees.

Would be a top 5 player in the comp without question.

I'm not diminishing Matera's abilities at all. Just the previous posters suppositions about Judd.

And while he didnt have blistering top speed his first few steps were as fast as anyone.

Both Judd and Matera were footballers first and Athletes second. Petch is the other way around. He doesn't have the the skills or the brain those two had. Some of those Judd goals were unbelievable and would still be freakish today.

Massive preseason and move to the wing please or high half forward role please. We’re dying for midfield speed and in 2019 he looked so close to ripping a few games apart running on to the loose ball and burning opponents off. Decent overhead and 5 goals in a match in your second year. Comes down to how fit he wants to get. Hope he’s started training already

Peter Materas are born not made. Would be a top 1-2 draft pick these days.
Thats not Petch but he can play a role. Ridiculous to compare

15 minutes of Judd highlights with coffee to start my day is a great way to begin

Must be the off-season?
My post was referring to a previous poster's fanciful comparison with Petch becoming a Matera?
I made no mention of Judd, you brought him into the debate and proceeded to swing the topic to Judd? Suppositions - really? I prefer Matera because I watched those GF's as they occurred back in the day and because Matera was a legend long before Judd arrived. In fact when a 23 yr old Matera tore Geelong apart, Judd was 9 yrs old. Yes, many idolise Judd, but Matera's GF performance/s were outstanding and the fact is Matera came first. Surely this debate has been done to death many times.
Each to their own Mr. Swervability!

I think i'm at fault for bringing Judd into this.
Compared Judd's goal kicking to Matera's but neither is even in the same dimension with Petruccelle for ability
