Think Flynn will do really well with more game time - really a matter now of how they balance Bailey and him. And also what they do with Barnett going forward

Hopefully, we use Flynn as an intercepting backman when he's not rucking and have BJ go on sprints from the goal square to the wings and knacker the opponent's taller KPD's.

I'd be pretty disappointed if we go back to having 2 ruckmen lining up each week with them combining for 100-125% TOG.

Other teams have their rucks resting and playing 85-90% TOG, freshening up their mids. KPP's usually sit around 95-100% TOG.

Both BJ and Flynn can play 100+ minutes, so use them and rest the explosive players.

While our mids are young, they'll probably need more bench time as they build their tanks, so having BJ do 60% and Flynn do 65% wouldn't be enough of a chop out. Expect blowouts at the end of games if that's the way they play it.

More likely we go back to Land of Giants in the forwardline and BW just rucks for 20% of the game

Couple of decent articles from splinters after an interview with Matt Flynn

Talks about his partnership with Bailey Williams and the confidence he’s gained from seeing Briggs develop at GWS

Also courtesy of him knowing Gilbee at GWS he’s developing a good bond between he, Reid and Chesser as he settles in

31 hitouts, 12 touches, five tackles, four marks, two clearances on club debut for big Matt Flynn.

All from 64% time on ground and only seven centre bounces.

Looking at his GWS numbers, he averaged 72%, 74% and then 77% TOG in each season, for a career average of 74%. 31 hitouts is his eighth best total in his career.

The tank will build and we can let him go nuts, with either Williams available for a chop out. Welcome to the club, mate.

He was good, but I would like to have seen him use his size more to take full possession of it and get it to our mids.

Further to that, with 64% TOG, he had:
  • 31 hit outs from 68 ruck contests @ 45.6% (Bailey averaging 17.9 hit outs @ 29.6%)
  • 8 of those hit outs to advantage @ 25.8% (Bailey averaging 4 to ad @ 22.3%)

This is not a criticism of Bailey. Rather, the more we see of Matt, the better off we will be. It will be exciting to see our midfielders benefit from improved ruck work.

Matt's inclusion seems to have had a positive impact on Bailey as well. According to Player Ratings, Bailey's recent performance was his fourth-best out of 61 games, with a score of 18, nearly double his average this year.

Stands to reason that Williams will do better the more he can match up against back up rucks as he's in that in between of not quite at no. 1 ruck level but better than most no. 2's.

It was also nice to see him at least halve his marking contests. Sick of seeing us kick to a tall only for them to be outmarked or completely blanketed

One thing I'd like him to change is at stoppages or throw ins, he puts his arms around the oppo ruckman. Hopefully this doesnt lead to him getting pinged. Other than that and possibly a bit more fitness, he looks like he'll help WC stop getting smashed in the ruck every 2 outta 3 weeks.

Talks about how his ankle injury was more frustrating than the hammy and that it continued be an issue through until the end of the season

Flynn being fit instantly upgrades our ruck, have no faith that he can be fit however.

Good to hear some positivity when it comes to Flynn - he's essentially a new recruit with the potential to have a significant impact on our on-field fortunes in 2025.

Seeing him & Hewett having a good run at it, injury free, would be one of 2025's highlights.

I think there has to be a genuine doubt on whether his body can ever withstand AFL footy. Hopefully he proves me wrong but we cant just enter each season with the 'it will be great to see him injury free' mantra, as he quite simply never is.

Hard to disagree really given he's never played more than 12 games in a year so far
Reckon he can play if he's fit, big IF though

Big bad Bailey on the other hand hasn't missed a game for 2 years

Will be good to have them both competing for the one spot hopefully

If we could add Bailey's durability and leap to Flynn we'd be cooking with gas

That must be part of our contract terms because Hunts about the only one I can remember making a hot start with us

It's a good point...Tim Kelly may be passable? In terms of recent trades...

Wellingham - trampoline
Redden - initially well off the pace
Jetta - see Redden
SPS - not cut out for AFL level week in week out
Ah Chee - see SPS

Nathan Vardy probably a pass given he came in as a backup to Lycett with Naita injured and ended up having to carry the ruck for the entirety of 2017.

Sam Mitchell and Drew Petrie went alright in their one and only season lol.
Josh Hill did alright too.

Obviously massive difference between speculative players and established guys like Baker/Graham, who will be expected to be best 22 from day 1.
Guys like Wellingham & Sierakowski were just unlucky with injury.
