So, can anyone point out the forwards that are actually playing well? How's Hendo been travelling?

I'm no huge fan of Jones, but people constantly potting him show themselves to have a complete lack of understanding of how a forward can succeed. A functioning structure with sharp and/or fast ball movement from midfield. I fail to see how the complete absence of this is in any way Liam Jones' fault. Would like to see a stat on how many one-out contests he's been in in comparison to other forwards. The numbers would not be pretty.

We could have a forward line of Dunstall, Ablett snr, Lockett and Carey and they would still struggle in front of our midfield at the moment.

I distinctly recall the discussion being when came over that he was not a 1st post full forward and would be better suited to 2nd or 3rd tall with Hendo and Cas.

Has that structure even happened more than the Sydney game? This isn't a blind defence but **** let's not pretend he hasn't been put in the role we wanted him in the first place

Reality is we have committed to Jones for 3 years (Plz correct me if I'm wrong). People can question the validity of his recruiting but fact is we are stuck with him. He won't be delisted at the end of the year. Im hoping the club will exercise every possible option to ensure he is a better contributor to the team.

The whole Jones vs Watson is a very sad state of affairs indeed and sums up the team in a nutshell, devoid of genuine talent. I think we will look back in 5 years and shake our heads.

Look back in 5 years?
Who's not looking now and shaking their head.

Time to take the pressure off Jones and play him as third tall down back. Looks like natural backman to me. Has Ted Richards written all over him. Struggeled at Bombers big time and then went back as swans and had a fine career.

I'd try Jones as a defender before giving up on him, Leppitsch was an inconsistent forward & made a handy career as a backman.
Maybe playing down back could be a good learning experience for his development as a forward, too. He would have to build on his effort and his tank to stay with his direct opponent and in the process learn how the good forwards play. Of course he would do that with the NB's first, not the seniors. But right now, I feel the only way he could stay with opposition forwards is by way of leg irons.

Jones doesn't have the tank to stick with jason dunstall in his current state, let alone the modern day forward

Things we can see: his kicking isn't great (I was expecting a bit more from a guy that kicked 5.0 in a winning VFL GF against Box Hill) and his intensity levels are roller coaster like.
Having said that, our forward STRUCTURE is fairly non-existent at the moment. Hendo has been in and out with some niggles. Levi has missed a couple games and is getting his leg straightened by Sav. Wood has played there when Warnock has come in. Menzel has been in and out, Ellard too. Jaksch has only played 4 games and pretty much spent all that time in the back line, but is intended as a swingman. Everitt is another swingman that has hardly spent any time forward. There's no consistency in the line up and our leading goal kicker is a mid. Other than Hendo, Levi and Menzel, the other spots are pretty much up for grabs, but Jones should only ever really be a 3rd tall (unless injury dictates otherwise), and shouldn't be played all the time anyway. Since his inclusion, we haven't used Everitt in the same way that he was last year. I though he was great last year swinging between back and front and running the wing in between. Last week was the first time he's really done that this year and he played his best game of the year. Jones only really needs to kick a goal a game to be effective as a 3rd tall, while Hendo and Levi should be getting between 40-60 each in a best case scenario. Currently our forwards don't even see the ball often enough to get close to those numbers, so their output is restricted by the mids performance.
It really is a sorry state of affairs, but I wouldn't call Jones a bust just yet.

Agree.

Supposed to be a third target in a side that doesn't really have a first or second target (Cas rucks a lot and Hendo has been out or playing injured) and even if he were we are so awful I don't reckon we'd hit him one time in 10.

No Eddie or Jeffy to provide forward pressure and the rest of the forward line could't run down a wombat with a Toyota Landcruiser. Mids don't get back to hold the ball in either. These two things mean the ball come out of the forwardline way to easy.

He's got worse as the team has got worse.

If he's still going like a burst blister when (if) we improve then we can shoot him.

He's still better than Watson.;)

I agree, IMHO Jones is a natural full forward (Quick 1st 10m, reads the drop of the ball well, likes to mark on the lead), in a team that thinks a forward should be getting kicks in the back pocket, and that a pass into the forward line means "Kick the ball as high as you can, then stand back and watch the big guys play marks up".

Our disposal might look a tad better too, if we allowed our forwards to play forward and they led straight at the ball carrier coming out from defence??

Full team defence my **** doesn't even work in the mini league!!

Jones was brought to the club as a 'THIRD' tall...

Until he is this player, we won't see any improvement in him. He is the perfect third tall...
