Why is Wingard stuck up forward again?

He's a star as a midfielder. He's barely AFL quality up forward. This has been clear to anybody paying attention for about six years now.
I agree he is a mid, but I’d bet my last dollar we are just mindful of his interrupted pre-season and are managing him slightly

I cannot ever remember Wingard handling the ball so poorly. Fumble after fumble. I hope this game blew out the cobwebs for him.
It wasn't just him yesterday but pretty much everyone from both teams that looked like they were playing wet weather football. For anyone that was at the game (close to the action) as to why this was so? Is it because both teams are poor skill wise or maybe just round 1 jitters?

If you look at the body shape and fitness at the best mid's in the comp I don't think Chad has the fitness base to run out 4qtrs at full tilt.
This takes 3-4 solid preseasons to build up knowing this is the position you are training for.
I think Mitch Lewis , Chad & Bruest & Gunston would be a very hard match up.
Very mobile.......smarts in Gunston & Chad.
You need leadership and smarts on every line.

He was a bit rusty hadnt done much for about 4 or 5 weeks. He is being eased back into it. In a few weeks he will be engaged more in the middle of the ground

Wingard was poor again yesterday.

  • 12 disposals (8 uncontested) at 67% disposal efficiency. 3 turnovers, 0 intercepts. As a pure forward, you might accept these numbers, but he is a half-forward/midfielder. He attended 3 centre bounces and spent 101 of the 120 minutes on the ground.

  • Only involved in 2 score involvements, which would have to be his own 1 goal and 1 point. As a half-forward/midfielder, this can't be enough. It should be your job to provide a link between the midfield and forward line.

  • 16 pressure acts and 4 tackles were more positive - but from the vision I've observed, a lot of this tends to be reactionary behaviour in moments that are better suited to hunting and winning the ball.

I keep hearing 'he plays best as a midfielder from both PA/HAW supporters'. I don't know his best position but I do know Breust is far superior in the deep small-forward crumbing position and I know that as a half-forward, he hurts our midfield-forward-interchange rotations. We need fresh legs rotating through the centre and when a player doesn't perform when it is his turn to go through the middle, it puts pressure on the other midfielders to return to the coalface and they end up getting less of a break and/or they receive greater scoreboard pressure when they return.

The apologists will argue that he had an interrupted pre-season and/or that he takes the attention of a defender/mid. Does he really take a better defender than Breust or Moore down forward and does he get much attention at all when he rolls in to the midfield?

He was on the trade table at the end of last season. It will be interesting to see how he goes this year, whether he continues to get games with lackluster performances when players such as Newcombe would likely give more as a Half-Forward/Mid (therefore someone like Bramble, Lynch or Impey could come into the team via the interchange).

I doubt he will be contracted again by Hawthorn when his contract is up at the end of this season. I know that he won't be contracted on the $700-750K he is on now.

Correct. This is his final year on that sort of coin .

His next contract should be around the 350 mark per year for 2-3 years.
