I love how the club have developed worpel this year. Clearly got talent, skills and temperament (competitive animal!) to play senior footy but lacked the fitness. Played him in the forward line at box hill and gave him a shot in the seniors for a taste. Sent him back to box hill and, as his fitness built through the season, slowly increased his midfield time. Only when he was ready was he brought back. Playing him at vfl level was about what was best for him so he could play more minutes at a lower pace instead of having to spend half of every game on the bench at afl level. Well done hawks!

Exactly why it’s sensible to keep Lewis in the VFL. Let him build his confidence by kicking 2-3 goals a game. Use this off-season to build his body a bit and then let him get into the seniors full of confidence and ready to handle bigger bodied defenders.

I got the train to and from the game yesterday with Andrew Walker (Former Carlton player and that guy who took the moral Mark of the year) He was really impressed by Worpel and was talking about how impressed he was that Worpel was able to transfer his incredible form into the VFL straight into the AFL. He's going to be a star.

FGS. If you read what I said there will be a multitude of changes to the midfield structure, Nash could be an athletic bull wildcard. We have other elite midfield targets. Nash could be a speculative chance. Internally it is not speculative. They think he can make it, just going to be giving him the chance

Some people have no vision, Tops.

It's like when people saw Roughie running through the middle and thought Clarko was a wizard, then suddenly you get all these Big-bodied-mids.

I agree with you, if Nash can develop quick hands in close, ain't nobody bringing that bull down solo.

The hands in close should be his B Game - he'd look fantastic using his body and legs to burst out of the stoppage. He has the pace and the size.

At the moment, he is going to one contest and then stopping.

When he can get those repeated efforts for longer periods of time, he could be a beauty.
Exactly. His fitness has come a long way this year so I’m hopeful that it will continue to improve over the next few preseasons :)

It may be his B-game, but it's an essential B-game to have. I'm imagining him bursting from a pack with two opposition players being carried along before he gets called for running too far without bouncing.

I feel better at this progression after Shoe's production in the last game.
If he can stay on the park he's more than serviceable to our game day win factor quotient.
If TOB is the other option to Schoey, I'd prefer Lewis to get half a dozen games this year and have a feel for firsts game speed to aim at over the summer conditioning program.
Don't think it would backtrack him at all.

Great game by Worpel. 32 possessions in 2/3rds a game is amazing. Especially considering he is unable to put in repeat efforts all the time. I am trying to remember the last player we had hit 30 touches within their first 10 games, as a Hawk. To put it into context a little - Worpel just had 32 in his 4th game with 10 score involvements.

Here are some numbers on how long some other players, mainly mids, have taken to turn in their first 30 possession game -

Titch - 2
Cripps - 6
Scully - 7
O'Meara - 12
Oliver - 14
Taranto - 15
C. Ward - 15
Prestia - 23
Martin - 26
R. Griffin - 31
Selwood - 32
M. Duncan - 35
D Shiel - 37
Viney - 43
Cotchin - 54
Dangerfield - 63
Silk - 78
G. Ablett Jnr - 103

Some great Hawks numbers -

Birchall - 16
Mitch - 19
Lewis - 27
Hilly - 32
Ellis - 41
Hodge - 51
Sewell - 52

I just chose some quality players at random to point out that regardless of opposition, position or whatever Worpel has taken what he had in front of him and turned in a game that many of todays greats were unable to do this early in their career and that shows he has something fantastic to work with. Great signs if he can keep it up.

2 games for Mitchell.

Must have started as a sub in those games ;).

Yeah - hehe, slow day for him. Must have been tagged. I think he racked up a couple of 50s and 64 in the NEAFL games as well and couldn't crack a spot in the Sydney midfield. That amazes me as his ball use is just as good as Hanners, Parker, Jack, Kennedy or any of them. He just gets it 10 times more than they do on average.

Muston vs Melbourne. 10 marks too.
Yeah, on debut too now that I remember. Another that could have been anything if he could get on the park. Was it him or Dowler that had the horrid car crash prior to draft?

Just checked, it was Dowler. Muston's knees were nothing to do with a crash.

Dowler.

Beau Muston had the dodgy knees that ruined his speed. Shame really
Yep, he could have been a great player. Very much like the sought after mid they all want today. Big frame and speed away from the contest. Shame he had a play dough knee. Neither Dowler, Thorpe or Muston were bad picks on available information (Maybe Dowler with the accident).

With Howe looking at somewhere between a 3-5 week suspension, I think Worpel will be given more midfield responsibility in our remaining games rather than being relegated to a pressure forward. His partnership with Mitchell/O'Meara/Sheils may be a snapshot into the future and hopefully he takes the opportunity with both hands.

I'm not expecting him to get 30+ every week - while his game was exceptional, it was against arguably the weakest midfield in the competition. But continuous senior exposure will do wonders for his development (as would finals exposure) and get him primed for a breakout 2019. If Jaeger and Worps both take the next step we could have a very formidable engine.
