Only 68% game time. He still needs those rotations, evidently. He should be chuffed with his game, and the club would love what he gives to the side. Tough, desperate player with great disposal and an ability to win the footy.

With Howe looking at somewhere between a 3-5 week suspension, I think Worpel will be given more midfield responsibility in our remaining games rather than being relegated to a pressure forward. His partnership with Mitchell/O'Meara/Sheils may be a snapshot into the future and hopefully he takes the opportunity with both hands.

I'm not expecting him to get 30+ every week - while his game was exceptional, it was against arguably the weakest midfield in the competition. But continuous senior exposure will do wonders for his development (as would finals exposure) and get him primed for a breakout 2019. If Jaeger and Worps both take the next step we could have a very formidable engine.

5 weeks???? I was thinking 2 if the AFL gets its way or 1 if we can convince them he meant to punch him in the chest but he ducked at the last minute.

Elaborate please.
Went to Jack Higgins who stats this week pale in comparison to Worpel's. However, it may be awarded due to consistency over the year, rather than individual games - I guess.

IIRC, Hardwick's nomination was not awarded for his best stats of the year.

Worp is a bit stiff to miss out, but why should anyone be surprised about anything that comes out of AFL House?

Yea no doubt it was a consistency thing, they often do at the end of the year. Normally only if no one stands out as an obvious pick though.

It's an awful award anyway, but still would have been nice to see Worpel get his well deserved nomination.

Praying that wasn't a Beau Muston game :(
Beau Muston's debut was a beautiful moment. He worked so hard and had so much bad luck and then he came in and proved he was worth persevering with. Such a happy feeling watching that and cheering every possession late in the game. It was a shame that the injuries got the better of him and he got more pain the more he played and his agility and speed fell away but he gave everything he had and should be proud that he was able to contribute what he managed. Towelled up dustbin fletcher* one game too.

time to send him back to Box Hill..we don`t want him playing too many games and putting himself out of Rising Star contention for next year. !!

When did it become a nomination for a “body of work” (I hate that term) rather than the best kid of the week?

That's exactly what I don't understand. You have to be the best of that week, but now they're giving nominations based on a kid who was unlucky to miss a nomination previously.

Have to agree arupist, and it's a reasonable explanation. Worps only has to string a few good games together and he will get his recognition.

Doesn't work like that, remember when one of the reasons Burton didn't win was "he's a second-year player, whereas the Essendon guy is a fresh recruit"

I thought it was because the AFL was trying to place 'award' bandaids over the haemorrhaging drug scandal wound, in the hope that the average punter would forget about Essendon being filthy cheats... you know Daniher over Jeremy Howe and McGrath over Burton???

I don't know what you mean... according to the AFL, Essendon never cheated.

Great game by Worpel. 32 possessions in 2/3rds a game is amazing. Especially considering he is unable to put in repeat efforts all the time. I am trying to remember the last player we had hit 30 touches within their first 10 games, as a Hawk. To put it into context a little - Worpel just had 32 in his 4th game with 10 score involvements.

Here are some numbers on how long some other players, mainly mids, have taken to turn in their first 30 possession game -

Titch - 2
Cripps - 6
Scully - 7
O'Meara - 12
Oliver - 14
Taranto - 15
C. Ward - 15
Prestia - 23
Martin - 26
R. Griffin - 31
Selwood - 32
M. Duncan - 35
D Shiel - 37
Viney - 43
Cotchin - 54
Dangerfield - 63
Silk - 78
G. Ablett Jnr - 103

Some great Hawks numbers -

Birchall - 16
Mitch - 19
Lewis - 27
Hilly - 32
Ellis - 41
Hodge - 51
Sewell - 52

I just chose some quality players at random to point out that regardless of opposition, position or whatever Worpel has taken what he had in front of him and turned in a game that many of todays greats were unable to do this early in their career and that shows he has something fantastic to work with. Great signs if he can keep it up.
Ahhh. Travis Tuck in game 10 as well. 2009, Rd 1, 32 touches in the GF rematch against the Cats.
After hearing Stewie Dew talk Travis up when the 08 Cup toured Sydney, he said he was on fire and training the house down. To hear this, then see his kamikaze attack had me tearing up.
Alas, it wasnt to be. A part of my heart is still broken.
Oh Yeah, and Worps! Whoah there. Horrible game, but one to remember as the breakout. Well done.

I still haven't gotten over Daniher winning mark of the year. Ridiculous decision.
