Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Nick 'the Wizard' Watson!

He knew exactly what year it was - that’s what pleased me so
Agree he knew what year it was, but not what team it was. In 1907 and 1908 Carlton won the premiership.

Kicked that 50 meters with ease, once he builds a tank and can avoid fatigue affecting his action he will tighten his action up naturally.

He has a beautiful technique and that 45m kick easily made the distance.
He could get another 5-10m from the same technique just by following through with hi kicking foot and then landing on it instead of landing on his non-kicking foot.

There is simply no excuse for him to snap kick for goal if he's not on the boundary line.

Found how the club has handled him quite interesting.

Usually for a rebuilding team, a pick 5 player would be used to sell hope and be doing a fair bit of media, even more so an x-factor player like Wiz. He had a nickname before he played a game, cult hero status.

Yet, the club have hidden him to a degree. He hasn't done any media that I'm aware of, apart from the stuff on draft night/1st session stuff.

Think it's a clever move to ease him into his career and focus on the footy.

6-17 with 5 total misses. Can this actually be fixed?
How many were set shots compared to general play?

How many of those set sots were drop punts opposed around the body?

Need a bit more context.

He had 2 set shots last week.
1 on the boundary where he went around the body, just missed.
1 where he went drop punt on a low angle, and it was a goal.

Depends on the club if it was saints they would be rolling him out to the media on a roster.

I reckon he's trying too hard, like wanting to be a fan favorite right away (putting to much pressure on himself). Look at him when his up the ground a bit and running into the forward line crumbing or delivering the ball, it all looks so natural.
I think you're reading into it too much. I think he's just going out and wanting to play his hardest, the way he knows how. He's had a poor run on the conversion, but like the great runs that others have had (Breust, Gunston) these things ebb and flow. It will even out at some stage.

General play he's awesome.
When hes having a shot it's like he is thinking about what celebration he wants to do to get the crowd involved, before kicking it!

Our small forwards work so hard that when they get a shot on goal they are likely to be heavily fatigued, this will improve as he builds an afl tank. Look at Ginnis stats this year too, 17.16 or something and he’s normally a beautiful kick for goal but he’s adjusting to having to work a lot harder up and down the field….it will turn

I think the Wizards inaccuracy stems from a temporary case of nerves and perceived pressure which I am sure he will rectify as he settles into the pace and expectations of senior AFL football.
I would agree with you if the same problems hadn't plagued him in junior footy. Matthew Lloyd probably said it best, at junior level his poor habits didn't matter as much because he'd still end up kicking bags, but we really need improvement in this area for him the fulfil his potential.

The great thing is he is already putting in the work to amend that awful drop punt set shot routine, it might take a while to see consistency with it in senior games but it will come. I'm surprised that he hasn't improved his snaps with Breust at the club, hopefully this happens soon too.

Today would be a great day for him to get the monkey off his back and kick a bag.

Similar to McKenzie last year who was putrid in front of goal I think the huge step up in speed and workrate sees The Wiz gassed when he is kicking for goal far more than in his junior career. No doubt his kicking gets better across his career.

Putrid? I give you his first 3 attempts were points, but by round 10 he had kicked 3.4. If Watson’s accuracy was on par we wouldn’t even be discussing the topic. Mackenzie was also drafted as a midfielder not a goal kicking specialist.

From some of the things I saw him do close up at training over summer and Mitch once yelling out when he got the ball in a match sim “Now speed do your thing!”. Of course he has to think team first but I also want to see the Wiz find balance that will come with more experience to know when to start taking the game on as well ……. we haven't seen anything yet!

Feel like McKenzie lacked penetration with his kicking last year but another summer in the gym has rectified that. His technique has always been fairly sound. Watson's routine seems all over the shop, whether it's minute one or 100
