Player Watch Welcome to Port Adelaide Rookie Pick #13 (2024) Tom Cochrane

Son of former Port Adelaide player Stuart, Cochrane is a mid/forward who boasts good hands and stoppage craft.

The 18-year-old is solid in the contest, and was one of the best afield in Central District’s under 18 grand final loss this year, with 22 disposals and a goal.

Offering strong contested work and prolific clearance-winning ability, Cochrane has the explosive streak that AFL clubs are searching for. He is gutsy overhead and clean at ground level, making for effective play through the middle of the ground in multiple phases of play.

His power is also felt forward of centre, where Cochrane often hits the scoreboard. He is mostly sighted working high up the ground to help connect the play into attacking 50, leaning on a high work rate and booming kick to do so.

Ok taxdogers watch as much as you can of younger brother Douglas ie Doug the next two seasons, as this pick means we are angling to take him in the 2026 draft.

Doug is rated a top 5 16 year old at the moment by recruiters. He already is 194cm KPD.

But welcome to Port Tom. He's a hard at it midfielder.

Is he the first father son to come to Port where Dad played AFL for Port but not 100 games?

Only if we can count Fabian Francis, then JHF

Hard at it type.

I remember John "The Future" Butcher had a younger bro, who was described as being as hard as a cat's head 😃

Sadly, was never much more than an SANFL Ressies standard player.

Hope TC has a good career here, and that his younger bro finds his way to us.

However the vibes I get are that Tassie will most probably be allowed to claim him as one of their priority 16yo and 17yo picks which they are likely to be gifted next year.

Tassie can only claim 17 year olds if those 17 years agree to it. Doug turns 17 next year. Tassie wont get any rights if their first year is 2028 which is widely expected to be the case.

I'm still shocked Stuart Cochrane only played 50-odd games for Port over 3 years. My vague memories of that era make it seem like he was here for years longer.
