I must admit to being disappointed we took him instead of Rome. But I have come around after watching a bit more vision of him. He same very good traits that will translate to AFL. His development will be good to watch. In the meantime, I have also been impressed with the path we have taken with Rome. It might be delayed a year, but if he wants it, and works hard for it, he will be on the list next year.

Only if we can count Fabian Francis, then JHF

Brett Ebert was taken as a F&S. Russell did not play AFL football for Port. He played one season of VFL for North Melbourne. Victorians like to count VFL games as AFL games.
A technicality for sure.

The absurdity is that Brett only got to Port as a F&S through a clerical error. Someone in AFL House stuffed up as under the rules of the day Russell had not played enough SANFL games for Port. Apparently 392 games across 17 seasons was not enough!!! Meanwhile if you were second cousin to the Collingwood boot sprigger you could get a gig on Collingwood's list.

The clerical error was at the SANFL.

The AFL said give us the list of games played by SANFL greats/long term players, so we can work out some sort of father son rule, and the SANFL gave them a list that included preseason/night series games. The VFL and WAFL always kept them separate from premiership season games, so the AFL assumed the SANFL did the same thing.

In Ebert's case nobody bothered to look at the pre and post 1977 games to check the then 20 year eligibility period games, as he had played so many games, and it was just assumed that he had played 200 eligible games between 1977 and 1996 seasons. Plus Brett not being drafted by anyone when he was 18, was a further reason to be slack about it all in the 2002 draft when he was 19.
