West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

Tell me you haven't been underwhelmed though? All of this talk about him being a Ferrari etc. Reid will be a good player, but the odds of him being the best of this draft is stacked against him, just like every other #1 draft pick.
I haven't minded his games up till now. Time will tell but I can see him getting a rising star nom this year.

I was impressed by his first 2 games and like most on the weekend, he had a difficult day at the office.

I'm not some numpty expecting an 18 year to light it up every game in their first season, playing as a primary mid in the worst side the AFL has seen.

Nobody else from the top 10 has particularly stood out yet either.
He just can't get enough easy ball at the moment. I'm not a numpty righting him off after 3 games but I think his first 3 games have confirmed that he isn't some football God that is significantly better than everyone else. Duursma looks silken Windsor has had a decent start playing in an unfriendly wing role.

Windsor plays in a side pushing for a flag and is below average in nearly everything, despite playing for a side with a dominant midfield.

Duursma can take some marks but doesn't do much else. Again, North's midfield is far better than WCE's.

Both are averaging less disposals than Reid, so aren't getting any 'easy' ball themselves, despite playing in far superior midfields in supporting roles.

Reid has had more CBA's than any other mid on our list. In fact, the area we were getting destroyed at the past 2 seasons(CBAs and stoppages) has massively improved this year, which is exactly what we needed.

All 3 are just starting their career.

Your comments are more moronic than usual, which is entirely unsurprising.

With due respect if Harley Reid was playing for Melbourne he would be performing better than Windsor (who has been very good).

Even a young Petracca or Oliver would struggle in the current WC team. Besides how can you judge a player after 3 games?

hard to say. As Reid would be on a wing. Nah Oliver wouldn't struggle. Petracca perhaps would.

When the club is -100 in uncontested possessions, it's a shock a teenager isn't racking up 30

I personally don’t care. Given amount of silverware, we are a robust bunch and if you are going to be bad, you may as well finish last. Would be nice to be more competitive but a few wins doesn’t make a season.

Only freo fans fear being labelled worst team in Australia. Even when people pick at eagles, it’s really deep fear and knowledge that really we can and will rise from ashes.
Amazing arrogance in a thread where Eagles fans are begging for a handout for being too shit.

Surely a guy playing inside mid is going to get the ball more times than a guy playing on the wing?

Regardless, I'm being a little facetious but Eagles fans were going way over the top in the off season. Saying things like 'Luke Jackson isn't a need, we need mids' etc. Coupled with saying that Reid is a Ferrari and every other player are Nissans etc.

How?

We've played against a team that's favourite for the flag(GWS), another with probably the best midfield in the comp(Port) and another with an AA ruckman + All-Aus midfielders(Bont & Liberatore.

A kid in his first season is going up against that presently and doing fairly well for himself so far.

He's not getting cheap one-twos, he's winning the ball at the coalface and doing it very well for a first year player.

Regardless, I'm being a little facetious

Obviously

No, most were saying that we needed the best contested player in the draft and the first 3 games would appear to vindicate that opinion.

Yes, this is still true. What's your point?

Coupled with saying that Reid is a Ferrari and every other player are Nissans etc.

Again, 3 games in and you've already cast judgement.

I'm still taking Reid over any of the trades on offer from last year, as would nearly every WCE fan.

the best midfield in the comp(Port)

bzparkes and that's why you should've split the picks when you had the chance. Reid has been disappointing thus far. You could've sped up your development by drafting 2 players.

Ginbey has also been struggling.
You should have split picks when you had the chance. Also the guy you split picks for has been struggling.

Maybe we should have split pick one for picks 30-39. Ten players would give us more chance of success than one. Am I doing this right?

Well in the following years you'd be better off.

2017 afl draft:
Picks 30-39: Tom De Koning, Fritsch, Tom McCartin, Harrison Petty.

2019 afl draft:Trent Rivers, Chad Warner, Keidean Coleman

2020 afl draft: Gulden

2021 afl draft: Mitch Owens, Matt Roberts, Soligo

All kids drafted into successful sides (bar Soligo), of which we are not..

North had 9 top 10 picks before their last draft (11 now); West Coast have three, one of whom is Gaff.
Would you like to know why that is the case? You really wanna know why your team has had very few top 10 picks Since 2010?

Thats easy... Eagles made finals in 2011-12, then missed out on finals in 2013-4. They then didnt have a top 10 pick

Well here's why...

Let's look at where the eagles have finished since 2010....

2010.... Bottom. Pick 4 was gaff.

2011: Eagles made a prelim final. Their 1st round was pick 23, Thank GWS having a lot of 1st round picks. Eagles used pick 23 on Murray Newman.

2012: eagles made a semi final. They didnt have a 1st rounder as that was traded to Collingwood for Sharrod Wellingham.

2013: eagles finished bottom 6. So that means pick 6 right? Well that was traded. Well it was pick 6 and 44 to Collingwood for picks 11, 31 and 49.

Pick 11 ended up Dom sheed. Pick 31 ended up as Malcolm Karpany. Pick 49 turned out to be a player that didnt play a game for west coast: Dylan Main.

2014: Eagles finished 9th but had pick 11, eagles ended up selecting Liam Duggan.

I am not gonna go through the 2015-20 1st rounders as eagles made finals.

2021: Eagles finished 9th. It should of been pick 11 , pushed back to 14 due to a couple of father son picks in Nick Daicos. But eagles used pick 14 on Campbell chesser.

2022: Eagles originally had pick 2, then that massive trade with Eagles, GWS, Port and North Melbourne happned. It was that massive JHF trade.

Eagles ended up with picks 8 and 12. 8 pushed out to 9 and was used on Rueben Gibney. picl 12 was pushed back to 14 ended up Elijah hewett.

2023: eagles finished bottom. got harley reid.

So theres ya bloody reasons why eagles had bugger all top 10 picks in the last 10-15 years. I think making finals in 2011-12, finishing 9th in 2014, Finals in 2015-20, and 9th again in 2021 played a fair reason that eagles had few early picks

happy to see the eagles go winless and 0-23? getting smashed by 60-90 points each game isnt gonna help your fan base.

Looking at the eagles history, they have interesting rebuilds.

2000-2001 was a rebuild. More like a plug and fill some small spots rebuild. Andrew McDougall and Daniel Kerr were the main kids eagles got in 2000. Judd and sampi were the main guys eagles got in 2001.

2008-10. This was the eagles 1st long term rebuild, a lot of kids were brought in that period. Eagles lost a few senoir players at the end of 2007 in Judd, Cousins and Chick . Eagles chose a few kids in the 2007-2010 drafts.

2013-4. not a long rebuild, like 2000-01, a plug and play rebuild. Filled some spots and played again.

2021 to now.... Yep, this is gonna be a long one. Eagles previous record of no finals was 3 years in a row from 2008-10. Eagles current streak is 3 years of 2021-23.

I cant see eagles making finals in 2024. if they dont make finals in 2024, thats 4 years in a row of no finals.

Agreed on the romance of father/son selections being ok going forward - the idea of little Mundy's and Pav's running around is the stuff of dreams

However, it bloody sucks for young teams like us. Still can't believe they ruled us ineligible for Ed Allen considering his dad was our inaugural captain

I never said I’d be happy. I would be just as unhappy with 6 wins. I do not understand this loser mentality. It’s about premierships, not about what is less unhappy.

Rest is drivel. I still remember 2014-2015 freo fans who were advising us of our downfall and nothing more hilarious than freo fans advising on how to build a list. In typical Freo fan way, it’s written in manner how it’s all seemingly luck.

Enjoy our lower position whilst it lasts, I get the happiness with freo fan base, us being last is in many ways a weight of the shoulders. Space given. Free to breathe. Yet still obsessed by what we do.

Reid named in the best players his first two games.

In a struggling side.

Not a single Eagles supporter is underwhelmed by Reid.

You are trying to build a fantasy narritive that suits your perspective which is far from the actual facts and reality.

The offer of pick 3 and two late firsts was underwhelming then and it still is now. Move on.

Ah yes, you've been famously supportive of North Melbourne in recent years...

A club who gutted their own list and changed coach how many times?

At least the Eagles tried to snag a 2nd flag before the window closed. It didnt work, often doesnt but at least they tried to win another one. Not gut the entire list in a planned way then when it didnt work stick the hand out.

And I didnt see Norths losing three best 22 to early retirement recently due to injury either.

North got their assistance packages. They certainly tried hard to get them......as did many supporters cheering them on.

Eagles supporters really dont want assistance but the problem is half the comp are getting better on the AFL 'managing draft access'. They hand out assistance every year to a select few clubs and have now made it near on impossible to catch up unless you are a big Vic team with access to players to trade in or part of those select Northern clubs.
