Just in Bailey has accepted a 2-week ban from the AFL. So I guess he'll be out for a month now.

Makes sense but I believe the club and its management might have deliberately leaked the photo now to all and have the matter all over and done with
Save the worrying for Bailey about what happens if it gets out etc He is already out for two weeks anyway what's another 2 weeks going to matter, just let the kid get his head right that's the main thing

It's a good lesson for why they shouldn't idolise football players. You should be teaching them to idolise more responsible individuals. Someone like Philip Lowe who got his PhD in economics from MIT and is now the Governor of the RBA would be a good choice. My two-year-old idolises Ben Bernanke and he says when he grows up he wants to be an economist.
Economists rock! Wife and I both are….never regretted career choice!!!! Then again I never quite made the full professional grade in my chosen sport…

Bevo quoted this morning saying he believes the AFL drug policy should be scrapped. Bloody hell, who is briefing him? AFL will absolutely hate that, and it’s probably added another 24 hours of headlines.

Bailey on the front page, Bevo saying this. Christ, do we have a media department?

Absolutely zero to gain - either of them or the club.

People (rightly or wrongly) will now look at Bailey today and think poor little rich boy. He should've left it at the apology and laid low for a few weeks.

Bevo, just shut up. Seriously. Seriously.

Bevo needs to learn that he doesn’t have to express every thought that’s in his head.

I assume the interview with the HS was set up by his manager.

We started off really well with that statement, should have just left it at that.

People worried about what Bevo or Bailey are saying and how this needs to be ‘played’. They can talk whenever they wish I reckon…but and it’s a big but, it’s needs to be honest and genuine. As soon as it becomes an excuse or saying something to get out of things or just spin, everyone sees through it and they bury themselves another notch.
Nearly every single politician from all sides who are coached to say this and that by marketing dickheads always looks fake. And this is our lot these last 20 years.
I think so far Baz seems genuine, I haven’t read today’s paper, but if he remains real, he will and the club will get through better. But the club hasn’t exactly been good with this lately. There has been a lot of PR spin and virtue signaling coming out of the club these last few years. That is why I never minded, but actually loved Bevo with Tom Morris earlier in the year, he was calling out bs and doing it bluntly.

"I couldn't get of bed or talk to anyone. All I could do was lounge around in my super comfy Cotton On briefs. They gave me the room and space I needed and the delicate stitching was unabrasive", claimed a repentent Smith. "The only thing I ate for days on end was McDonalds. If it wasn't for their delicious wholesome burgers and fries I could have starved. I wasn't in a good place, but their Happy Meals put a smile back on my face."

Geez Baz just shut up, and don’t talk to that scum.

Nope. They may indeed be "scum" but once the story is out there, there is no point in stonewalling them. It only leads to wild speculation.

The club has shown exemplary crisis management by getting out in front of the story and and is having a say in, if not controlling its narrative.

Smith was caught dead to rights any whiff of spin, obfuscation or outright lies would've only intensified and prolonged the scandal.

Unless there are details yet to be divulged. This story should fade very quickly in the next day or so, because Smith and the club have sucked all of the oxygen out of it. Leaving very little room for the usual bush fire of innuendo and speculation to take hold with the countless talking heads in the media who are all looking to take a narrative lead.

Assuming he can get his mental health issues under control. Its pretty obvious that Smith has the golden ticket and will skate through this bump almost unscathed. Its in everybody's best interest for this to happen.

Beveridge saying the illicit drug policy should be scrapped isn’t sucking the oxygen out of the story. It’s adding to it.

Just needed to say he supports Baz and leave it at that.

Why? Its a legitimate question that the game needs to answer. Just because its our club in the spotlight this time doesn't make it any less so.

What was the context of his statement. Was he asked to reply to Jeff Kennett saying the same yesterday. Does he think its pointless given how prevalent drugs are in our society. Or did he just blurt it out?

As a general principle and as somebody who has moaned plenty about the shitty messaging we can get from the club. I'd rather hear what he actually believes than some mealy mouthed nothing statement in support of Smith. If we've learnt anything under Bevridge, its that he isnt one for holding back or avoiding when asked a direct question. It was good when he torn Tom Browne a new arse live on TV and its good now.

This whole Bailey Smith saga is a great lesson on why one should send their kids to public schools rather than Xavier in search of the old boys network. I was done with mullets, drugs, abs and blondes by the age of 16 at Brisdog tech.

McDonalds comments go with the picture on front page where his wearing a top with McDonalds on it.

For context I don’t have issue with what Bevo said.

But I would have briefed him to keep his messaging short and sharp around supporting Baz. Not add another layer to the story, if our aim is to mitigate this story ASAP.

To answer your question of why, I think the AFL would be filthy with Bevo’s comments which isn’t ideal for us with them being the ones who will determine Baz’s punishment.

Like any good leader must in a time of crisis, Bevo is just trying to draw attention to himself and away from his charge. It is designed to take the pressure off Bailey. Unfortunately, this may mean making some sort of statement in a calculated way that would involve something that would never happen. Bevo and the club know the AFL won't and can't abolish the drug policy.

Ive now seen his comments in full.

One could easily frame an argument where Beveridge bringing up the issue of how flawed the AFL drugs policy is this morning was a deliberate strategy to shift the focus away from Smith and onto the game as a whole. One thing we know about Beveridge is that he picks his targets very strategically. The issue of the AFLPA compromised illicit drugs policy is one that I would imagine has been simmering away behind the scenes at all clubs for a very long time. He may well have seen this as an opportune time to play that card.

Thus killing two birds with one stone.
