Inspired by Cezz The Catter 's superb recent admission regarding Jarrad Jansen (see below), it's time to revel in some top-shelf mediocrity.

Once said this bloke was Joel Corey V2, forgive me o Lord.

Any player whose career was cruelled by injury (Spriggs, Snell, Mitch Brown) doesn't count. I'm just after players where you were just completely, utterly, plainly, wrong.

I'll kick off with the obvious: I thought Jordy Murdoch was going to become the next Andrew Embley. I spend nights praying to Reg Hickey for forgiveness.

I was on the Jordan Schroder train.

Also thought GHS would be a-grade by now.

Basically most of the 2012 VFL Premiership side I thought would be best 22 by now.

And going back further I thought Ryan Gamble was certain to cement a place, in one of the best teams ever, circa 09-10. That was a howler.

This one comes up a lot...and I do know why but I did get to see this guy play in SA before he came over and he could play.

Noone believes me though. :'(

As for me...damn, my list is long although I will preface it by saying I don't think I ever said they'd be "stars" but rather I thought they'd be pretty useful players who'd play more senior footy than they actually did (which was never for some of these blokes).

Ryan Gamble. I was watching his debut game the other day on Youtube and he looked like a star. I also remember him kicking 4 goals in a game against 2nd placed Bulldogs a few rounds later.
Came here to say the same. Ryan Gamble, fantastic leap, great mark. Really tore it open in the preseason comp one year (09?), then got knocked out taking a mark against the saints. Was never the same again.

Who was that promising midfielder we had that broke his leg in a final in ‘09 and left to Ess for more money?

I though he would be a very good player, ended up being very ordinary without the superstars around him.
Brent Prismall. Forced his way into a midfield with Selwood, Corey, Ablett and Bartel. Was going ok until he did his knee.

Thank you I forgot his name

I thought he looked promising until he went to Ess, don’t know whether that was due to his knee injury or the lack of support around him without the GFC stars.

I remember Simon Hogan being highly rated but always injured, played in the epic match against St. Kilda when both were undefeated and looked solid, was barely seen after that.

He was one I thought was a steal as a rookie.

That was the thing with Geelong 07-11. The guys that came in new their role. They played some of the Geelong "Kennet's curse" games on tv recently and a few of them we won with some big names out. The guys that stepped up new their role.

The good old days.

On the subject of small name players in the Hawthorn run in 12-13 both Jesse Stringer and Jackson Sheringham had near BOG performances against the Hawks in that period, itd be nice to get that much out of our average footballers now.
