I was too busy shotgunning tinnies and abusing Essendon supporters to listen to his speech, but I'm really concerned by suggestions that he spoke well - real footballers can't speak - it's been scientifically proven that if the part of your brain that enables you to play footy well works, then the speech part of your brain is shithouse.

well like most urban myths, there is real science behind it. If you have a guy who can speak, he has options in life....if he has options, he wont go in hard when the pressure is on.....in mathematical terms, there is an inverse relationship between eloquence and mongrelness.....

i get the feeling that at some stage in a grand final, there will be a hard ball get to be got, and darcy will call a meeting and ask for submissions...

after reading the media about the anzac game, we have the greatest footballer of all time, and the greatest captain of all time ....and i looked at wiki and we still have 15 premierships

I wouldn't have recruited him. Stuff the exposure to elite pathways, December birthdays, etc... Just draft dumb blokes who can play footy and go the knuckle when they come up against blokes who play footy better than them.

Stop your whining about Darcy, The Greatest Captain That’s Ever Lived.

If he wants to make a speech, rather than go the thump, then let him. He’s taking his cues from K Rudd, the longest speechmaker in recent Aussie history.

It has a dulling effect. It stuns the opposition. Some players even fall asleep. It’s a brilliant tactic and yet another area in which the Pies are innovating.

Apparently WHE is an accomplished orator. If only he had access to Darcy's stylists, would have been him up there.

All he has to do now is do it BEFORE the game starts....

I'm trying to think of a time that I've heard him speak - can't.

A post game interview would be good. So Will, where did you disappear to for most of that game?

This sort of thinking is why we get to and lose so many grand finals. You can bore them to sleep throughout the rest of the year, but on grand final day the fighter jets and dancing girls wakes them up.

I hadn’t considered the bolded, although there were fighter jets before the game on Tuesday. I think they got the Bombers boys worked up, due to some sort of affiliation.

On the topic of Our Glorious Captain’s oratory - where are the complaints about wokeness? Have the anti-woke brigade been stunned into silence?

He avoided his usually wokeness by thanking people for killing the Hun. That's what I took out of the speech - the glory of going to foreign lands and killing people. It was inspiring and unwoke.

Yes. Of course, Tony Shaw was the exception. Even the Daniher's were comatose after 30 secs. Perhaps he could provide expert coaching for Darcy.

I'd complain but I wasn't awake for it.

I recognise that you would love the bruzzie bruzz to be captain, and I feel the same, but we all need to recognise that we have bigger hyphens to fry.. maybe next year we can encourage darcy to include mentions of meat pies, kangaroos and holden cars and especially say a word or two about football...even though it's not a high priority for him

I also didnt realise that essendon had arranged for the RAAF before the game. Their ability to cheat knows no bounds. I hope the umpires are investigated for their efforts during the day. I thought the pies' struggle against oppression was inspiring.

anyone out there a travis cloke fan can read this and then have a good look at themselves.
thank god, he is at essendon poisoning their minds. I'm speechless that a player would put anything above a grand final win, including babies and loved ones.

"Essendon ... talk about what the club stands for"

What? That'd be a short conversation.

Perhaps that's why they keep losing on Anzac Day - don't want to give the speech, as they've got nothing to say. And apparently it's now all about giving a good speech...

Get a few WWII vets in there to tell the bombers about the benefits of benzedrine before battle. Would go over well.

Tay will be a huge game changer to have back. He'll bring leadership, toughness, work rate and kicking

sadly most of them will go to the opposition.

you lost me at kicking chimey.....tay tay had a couple of mis-kicks earlier in the season that went through the middle...

The answer is pretty obvious. Essendon has played in 2 gfs since 1995, unlikely to make it again for generations. Anzac Day is once a year. Travis is just trying to instill some hope in the Essendon players that their careers might have some meaning.

He said he has won grand finals. Plural. Can’t even kick straight when he’s trying to count his premierships.
