Who do we target in this years draft?

Considering the rumour is players are already talking about what to do in the post season we may as well discuss who are our draft targets.

I have not hidden we should target Lycett at the SANFL level whose at Port and I think we should trade for another first round pick and attempted to collect a specialist midfielder.

It's obvious we possibly should have done this over Moore (no offense to Moore BTW) but we need anothe dedicated midfielder and potential star Ruck.

If we picked up Lycett and a Midfielder they would accompany Last years selection of Moore, JMP and Butcher and from the previous season Hartlett, Trengove, Braodbent and Banner.

Assuming everyone is right with Trengove I think we have CHB and CHF stitched up. Hartlett, Broady, Banner, JMP can run through the midfield, if he can draft a line breaking midfielder that would be very sweet IMO.

We need everything. Whether it comes from players already on the list or from the draft im not sure but we need another ruckman (could be Redden), we need a key forward (could be Butcher), we need a genuine ball winner (could be Banner), we need 2+ quick midfielders with outside skill, we need another shutdown small defender and another shutdown tall defender.

Everyone has said over the past few years that we need talls, talls, talls, but the midfield still needs so much work.

Depending where we finish, if we can land Lycett with our first pick ill be stoked. After that we still need to look at midfielders and maybe a key defender. Depends how many picks we get too.

The best availaible natural midfielder, followed by the best available natural midfielder, then the best available natural midfielder, and then go for what needs fixing most after that.

Rucks etc are important, but without a very good midfield you wont go anywhere, and our midfield sucks.

Our Best Midfield doesn't Suck, Wingmen in Pearce, M.Motlop, Krakouer, Salopek, Onballers like Gray, Hartlet, Boak, Thomas. It is a matter of having the each week.

Lycett or Solly are chances to reach us.

Lycett could play earlier as a tall forward pocket and then mature into ruck , hence we wont have to wait the years of dev typical for big guys.

As for later rounds I would target biggish inside midfielders from any league at any age bracket within reason because we desperately need to improve this deficiency.

As for Jon Giles I think we stuffed up here by delisting him to early. Spent years developing him and he suffered from lack of game time at centrals ie surjan - should have moved earlier. His stats are better then most and he is clearly a skilful kick & mark type big man. I would at least rookie him for next year if still available.

What position does Lycett play i have heard his name but know nothing about him as i live away:)

The moddern ruckman, Pacey and High Skills via Foot and Hand. Not the big lumbering dinosaurs like Primus, French, Lade, Lobbe, Redden and Giles, More of the Cox, Leuenburger, Paddy Ryder type.

A Lade type....Ruck who can play forward. Good agility, good skills, good ruck work. I feel our only chance to get him will be to finish below the Crows.

Solly is good but is undersized. May fall quite a long way due to this.

I just hope we back him in and play him instantly, a bit like Carlton did with Kruzuer

Where to start with that rubbish.........

Pearce is a good player, as is Boak.

Gray Hartlett & Krak are injured too much, you can't build a midfield out of guys that don't play much. And not one of these guys look like injuries are are passing thing. They all have HISTORY in that regard. Can't keep wishing a side gets better. Salopek? Well he's king of the bunch, the other 3's inspiration possibly.

Thomas???.....meh......run with try hard. Got enough of them. Hardly a guy who will ever tear it up.

Marlon Motlop? The guy only wins uncontested footy, that's when he's playing of course. At the moment he's got about as much chance of being an AFL mid as you or I. Ridiculous call. Be lucky to be on any AFL list in 2 years time unless he discovers some heart.

Our midfield does suck at present, hugely. We do have a couple of guys that could help IF they can get their bodies right but given each of them has a history or injuries, then the odds of that happening are very very slim.

If we sit back and HOPE for another 2 years, well good luck trying to run an elite level sporting body on hope.

Open your eyes.

We need a midfield that can stand up again and again and again. Not a midfield where it's decimated as soon as the wind changes direction.

So where will Lycett probably fall in the draft, whose he up against whose better and have GC already drafted teenage Ruck's?

anyone got these possible answers?

wonder if we can get a new coach..

but we need a good solid ff that can hold the structure..
lets face it tredders hasnt done much since 2004 except hold the structure in place and sinces hes been out we havent had any up front so thats what we need!!!!! and we need to keep boak and train him to stop turning the bloody ball over!!

Lycett will go top 5.
GC have promised D.Swallow #1, probably H.Beanell @ #2 then Day/Darling/Lycett @ #3.

So we may need to finish LAST, so that's Choco's evil plan is it. You would think the Crows would take him at pick 4

Take the best available, in the most important areas of the ground (no HBF or HFF for gods sake). Doesn't matter if they're tall, small we just need quality in as many positions as we can. Hard to speculate specifically who we're going to take as there are always sliders and bolters... ie. Butcher supposed to be a lock top 2 pick, Rich meant to be in the top 3 etc.

Yeah it is way too early.

FWIW most of the very early phantom drafts have Lycett going at around 8-10.

I would rather us back in Brogan, Lobbe, Redden and Bass and pick up a project ruck with a late pick and maybe a mature ruck in the PSD.

I really want our draft pick to be used on a gun midifelder. Our tall stocks are looking OK atm. As was said earlier high picks should never be used on BP, FP, HBF and HFF types.

From all reports to classify Lycett as a project ruck I think is under estimating him.

I just don't hold out hope for Brog's and bass and who really know with Lobbe and Redden.

Lycett can swing forward going by comments in here.

I wasn't saying he was a project ruck, just that we have other more pressing needs. I think we need to back in our young ruckman and use a stop gap if need be (i.e. Meikljohn, Giles, Cloke) and focus our attention on a gun midfielder.

Yes Lycett can swing forward but with Tredders (maybe), Shulz, Salter, Stewart, Trengove and Butcher do we really need another tall forward option? We just need to play the ones we have IMO.

Warren and Salts may as well be removed from that list and trengove too if Chad goes.
Leaves Schulz, Stewart, Butcher.

Absolutely we do.

Re Lycett, my guess is he'll either get taken by the Crows, or alternatively by the club with the pick before us (probably the Crows anyway), similar to Leunberger when the Lions took him.

Lycett sounds perfect. Athletic ruckman / forward who can mark. Our season is falling apart, so we should be able to get him.

We need a midfielder with penetrating disposal.

Also, a fast goal kicking mid / hff would help!

It would also be great to find a couple of gems late in the draft from the SANFL.

Beech, Goldsworthy, Ohara, Liddle, Jonas and Rose are names mentioned as promising SANFL players...
