Who do we target in this years draft?

Id be very happy with George of the Jungle,

Collingwood dont have a pick until #44, we will snap him up before then imo.

He is a bit of a risk, but I would be willing to take it with one of our Second Round Picks.

FAITH: I would think our main focus would be in the midfield, a Classy Player with a bit of speed would be very nice. Probably pick up Two Mid's with our first two picks, and a KPF with our Third imo.

If were going for a Ruck, it wont be until the Rookie Draft, or if someone decent is still left with our 2nd/3rd pick.

Definately not a priority though imo.

You keep being linked in the media to Lycett, but i dont think you need him.
In my PD i have you taking Prestia, with Pitt/Cook and Jacobs a possiblity.
Thoughts?

If we were to get Lycett, it wouldnt be with our first pick imo. I just cant see the need for us to use our first round pick on a Ruckman.

I can see us picking up Pitt, but would we struggle to get him with our second?

I think Darling is still a bit of a roughie to get to Pick 16, and if he is there we will swoop. Will probably go to Melbourne, but I can actually see them going for Lycett aswell.

The same with Smith, I could see Brodie getting to Pick 16 aswell and if he is there, we will take him.

For us I think it will be in this order of preference:

1st: Darling, Smith, Polec, Prestia, Pitt
2nd and 3rd: Prestia, Pitt, Cook, Fasalo, Young
4th: Young, Solly, Litherland

I don't want to see us using anything above a third round pick on any player under 180cm.

One thing that pretty much all Port fans seem to be agreed on is that we want to have a more physical side. You can't do that by loading up on more short blokes, and I don't want to read a response that says `Oh but player X is tough for his size' - he might be, but if we don't recruit player Y who is a big ****-off midfielder that wins the ball and thumps his opponents in the guts all day, player X will be shut down in important matches like is currently the case with the short midfielders we already have.

Summary: Say no to Prestia.

2 Midfeilders with our first two picks ill be happy.Excited only 12 days till draft day

I share your excitement Moore26

I think the next couple of years will be about drafts, trading and development.

Rebuilding can be painful sometimes but it can also be very rewarding watching the club evolve.

Aren't Melbourne after a KPF? Melbourne have Fitzpatrick and Gawn developing as Ruckman. Given this, do you still believe they'll target Lycett?

Its really hard to say mate,

Why would Port go for him though?

Ruck: Lobbe, Bass
Forward Ruck: Stewart, Westhoff, Redden, Webb
Back Ruck: Trengove

I don't think Port should go for Lycett either. Port have plenty who could do a decent to good job if need be, in the Ruck.

Daniel Stewart is going to get better and be a darn good player.
Westhoff sodomized the Eagles a couple of times this year. He won't win taps regularly against Cox and Naita, but he was picking up useful touches around the ground and making a nuisance of himself against my mob. He needs to develop consistency, but he's a good player when firing.

Along with Port's genuine Ruckman, you guys have more than enough. I don't see the need to select a Ruckman at all, let alone use a 1st round pick for one, unless you're not so confident about the eventual outcome of 1 or 2 the players you've mentioned.

Another fascinating background article by Emma Quayle on a budding draftee - Mitch Hallahan.

The kid can play, is tough, and is a leader at his club. The youtube footage of him - before the AFL took it down across the board - was impressive, he looked a bit Selwoodesque to me in the way he created time and stood up in tackles to deliver the ball.

Good article, just the type of player i like

I got to see his video on youtube before it was taken down and he was very impressive, very hard at it and not scared about putting his head over it. Used the ball well and the only critisism of him i had was he seemed a bit one paced but he is more of an inside mid where it isnt exposed.

I'd be more interested in seeing the opposite of the highlights packages put together. Deficiencies would be a better way to look at some players given most will nitpick almost immediately if the player doesn't burst out like Chris Judd or Joel Selwood.

Best available midfielders for mine.

And that's what the recruiting people at the clubs would do - pore over hours and hours of recordings noting the good and the bad. But the nuffies like us can only go by what is out there.

Personally I would be all over Lycett like a cheap suit at pick 16. 202cm teenager, great talent, moves like a player 10cm shorter, local product, has already played SANFL league footy.

I suspect he has slipped down the pecking order after being highly rated not that long ago simply by being a victim of clubs looking for reasons not to draft rucks early.

Absolutely, it was more a comment derived at the ability of all and sundry to look amazing in their highlights package.

I'm at relative ease with whoever Port Adelaide drafts. One of the areas I can't give Rohde or the Football Department anything less than a well done is drafting. We've done alright since 2006 and funnily enough come draft day I know Port Adelaide is going to do all right.

Making sure our first round pick is a hit an an absolute priority. The second round draft picks even more so given our position this year.

No doubt, at least it gives everyone 6 months of hope. After that it's up to the Halo Effect to kick in. :)

You want a home run with that first rounder, but you also have to be strategic about what's available later. I'm less than a draft amateur, but going by the phantoms, there seem to be some solid genuine mids around in the second round, but I doubt there is a tall the quality of Lycett.

At 16 the mids look more to be flankers or x-factor forwards who could become mids. Heard that a lot of times- I'm still hoping for Robbie Gray ;).

Draft from a PAFC perspective

2006 - one of our best
2007 - probably won to forget
2008 - again one of our best
2009 - too early to tell but definitely a couple of rough diamonds but definitely a few dogs

2010 - fingers crossed
