Who do we target in this years draft?

It will be interesting to see how good he is draft day.

To be honest Burgatron has left some big shoes to phil when it comes to the phantom draft next week.

The Daffatron just doesn't sound as imposing. Maybe they'll just call it Plucka Duck. :p

At 21 he's not a kid anymore. If he goes in the first round it means we have more chance to pick up someone with a strong body like Jack Darling.

I didn't realize that Burgo wasn't doing the draft this year. Paul already has committed two sins imo. Firstly he leaked his top 25 before releasing his final prediction. Second, he is going by what he thinks clubs need rather than doing a bit of investigation.

Burgo did a lot of covert interviewing and had a little bit of inside knowledge by doing his homework. He said that his mail says we are short of ruckmen when a person commented that we have drafted tall in the past and may be looking to go mid with our first pick.

It is always hard to follow someones footsteps though

I had watched a lot of Milera and I suppose no one talks about him because we have an abundunce of his type in our team. Is he worth taking as a late pick?

M Westhoff, first round, lock it in. Does that save us money on paying out his last year ? ok, only joking.

Seriously, why would they go tall given tippett, walker & jacobs as well as those listed in the story, and the vets were three mids and a small forward.

As for Milera maybe we considered him instead of Phillips. Looks like we went for the more mature body instead. Who knows we may rookie him if he's still around at that point.

Really?

Anyone know anything about this guy? Obviously has great endurancde which is going to be important with the new interchange rules.

p.s. nickname MUST be killer!

Haven't seen him, U18 player who played last 9 or so games in the ressies and got BOG in rd 23. There's a couple of Youtube clips of him.

Sorry don't know the whole embedding thing.

Some good points and bad points shown with a few errant handballs and kicks followed by some signs of toughness. A bit short at 178cm and stats on Maggies website show he has been in and out of the 2nds over the last couple of years. Without seeing or knowing anything about him its hard to say if he'll get picked up but wouldn't expect it to be a high pick IMOO.

I can't see B. Smith falling past the Cows. He seems their type of player.

I Smith...

I think you can probably lock in B.Smith to the Crows. Sounds a bit like a Boak type player to me.

I. Smith looks good, has size and speed. Probably a safer bet than Darling if we want a big bodied mid.

I Smith is still twiggish, but has a good frame to build upon. I just love his speed, so wouldn't be disappointed if we grabbed him.
I like Darling as well, but I think maybe pick 16 is too much to pay for a battering ram type mid/forward player, especially when there's a guy already on our list who could do the exact same thing.

Smith probably just needs to fix his ball drop. One problem which could see him slip out of the first round is that he might not have a right foot but I haven't seen enough of him to know for sure.

If we don't go for one of those two then a good sized inside mid who can kick would be good.

I hope we have learnt from the Lobbe 'mistake' (I may yet be proven wrong) that taking ruckman early in a draft is a pointless gamble. All due respect to Lycett's playing ability and potential, but I really hope we target a mid with our first pick.

I think the guy who writes the article is a **** and a *%$*&* and he can take his *&*&*#$ opinions and shove it up his *&^^&&*.

His article means nothing. While we may go for Lycett, there is compelling arguments to go for mids. Matty seems to think our Rucks will be ready and that there is no problem there. If we choose Lycett it will be because he is the best available player. If there are any good mids available I think theat is a greater priority.

Um... I think Gardiner, Kruezer and Natianui might have something to say about this.

That said, so would Josh Fraser... :p

Gardiner pick 1
Kruezer pick 1
Natianui pick 2

There are very few ruckmen taken picks 4 to 16 who have succeed to be dominate ruckmen. The best ones tend to be picks 1 or 2 or rookies or in the 30 to 50 range.

Dean Cox, Aaron Sandilands and Darren Jolly > Michael Gardiner, Matt Kreuzer and Nick Naitanui. All three were rookies. Taking rucks in the first round is a waste.

Even if it wasn't, we don't need another young ruck. We already have 3 unproven rucks. Why add a fourth? Chances are the way the game is moving only one of them will ever be needed in the best 22 anyway. We should've gone proven or nothing IMO, and we've already missed the boat on proven. Use the first pick to strengthen our average looking midfield or forward lines (and use the rest to do the same).

Yeah, I tend to agree. In a normal draft year, where clubs only have one draft pick, a guy that has a couple of significant risks associated with him like Darling does (injury, behaviour, AFL role uncertainty) could certainly slip later.

Gold Coast have so many early draft picks though, they can afford to shotgun draft and take several risks along the way. First round picks are not a rare and valuable commodity for them, they are just more meat for the beast.

Players more likely to be overlooked by Gold Coast (that might fall outside the top ten) are `good ordinary' players - guys that look like they might develop to be solid AFL players, but they lack the spark at junior level that says they might become a star. Gold Coast will be hunting for that spark.

We are much more likely to come out of this draft with reliable & limited players than talented inconsistent freaks.

Been saying this for years now, don't tell me the penny is starting to drop?
Now some clown will come on and say ....well the Crows would have taken him if we didnt ...Pity they did not have the pick before us in 2007.
Saying that ,Lycett looks to me from the little i have seen to be the sort that could prove handy up forward so i would not strike him out of pick 16

So you're a little unsure about his comments? ;)

I too hope we go for the best available midfielder.

So Lycett is ok to pick at 16 becasue he can go forward yet Lobbe was a massive mistake?
