I do think there is enough evidence that Collingwood have traded with a look to the future more than Geelong. It was a stated intent by Buckley and Eade in 2012 when they assssed the list going forward as not being good enough. For various reasons experienced players Dawes, Wellingham, Shaw, Thomas, Lumumba, Beams, Thomas have all been traded out. A few stop gaps have been bought in to manage the transition but in the main youngsters have come in as the trades for the 7 mentioned. They would be Grundy, Broomhead, Adams, Scharenberg ( included pick swaps) , Crisp + De Goey. The other swap was the Clark, Varcoe, Lumumba deal.

It's not that we have not picked any mature players but their has been a real emphasis on getting quality youth into the place. I don't think Geelong have been as aggressive in trading out premiership players to achieve their aims as the Pies have. I am not even claiming Buckleys plan is one that will work, jury is out. Still to me the future v present difference between the two clubs seems to have some substance.

Pies clearly not near contending at this stage where Iwould see the Cats with strong designs on the top 4 in2016.
I don't think that it has necessarily been a strategy to trade out as many of those players as what you have though. IMO 6 out of those 7 names that you've mentioned either left off their own accord or were traded out for reasons other than their on field performance. Now that's not to say that you haven't done well in maximising your compensation from those players leaving the club but lets not kid ourselves into thinking that it was a strategy that the club had mapped out all along.

Player retention is important and for the most part Geelong have been better at that in recent times than what Collingwood have. I don't see this as a bad thing even though it will mean that we won't have as many shiny new first round draftees as what Collingwood will have. Whilst your club has been bringing in more youth, so have we. Time will tell as to who's youth turns out to be better but I'm confident that we're heading in the right direction to have a strong side for at least the next 5 to 6 years.

Just on Nathan Buckley, I remember writing a post to you about a year ago saying that Collingwood supporters shouldn't be expecting to make the finals this year because your list just wasn't ready. In the end, although you didn't end up making the finals you won more games than what I expected and there were some very encouraging signs, particularly in the first half of the season. I don't believe that excuses can be made for him any more though. Every year since Buckley has taken over, Collingwood have placed worse the following season. At the very least this trend has to change or he should come under immense pressure to keep his job. A club can only keep slipping for so long before some serious questions need to be asked and you now have enough talent on your list to begin to trend upwards IMO.

You're right in that Geelong do have strong designs on the top 4 in 2016 because our CEO has come out publicly and said as much. Personally, I don't think that we'll finish that high but I'm glad that the club is setting high expectations and I do believe that we are building nicely for 2017 and beyond.

Certainly agree with you Bucks is on a tightrope and has taken us as far down as is allowable. We are back in the ruck of clubs now and no certainty to go ahead. Think Buckley has been brave but whether it works out remains unknown. We have some good kids but still there are a fair few clubs who have better youth than us.

I still can't agree though that Collingwood hasn't given up on established players in favour of a youth policy because of perceived shortcomings more so than Geelong. While I don't necessarily see this as a positive it seems a pretty obvious point of difference.

Geelong. Draw good this year. But very reliant on Taylor down back and Hawkins forward. Either those injured it looks bleak. Selwood and Dangerfield obviously elite. But then you have a depth issue. Guthrie case in point. Collingwood need more games in their young talent pool. And I think huge question mark over Buckley as a coach.

Who cares both won't male finals.

We finished first in last year's trade period, while Collingwood finished second.

Looks like we will finish ahead of them on the ladder this year as well

Voting is close, I guess becuase Collingwood is a big club. Doesnt matter its on tbe field that decides your ladder position. Geelong with a lot of clubs in between

Kinda how we all felt after Geelong lost to both Collingwood and Carlton in the last few weeks lol

Threw you a bone and still 3 losses more. Oh and you still have to play the Hawks, Crows, Giants, North and the Dogs. ROFL.

The margin of the two clubs will be the size of the Grand Canyon :D
