Banter Why do you hate Carlton?

They would've won 2000 with Kouta, apparently

Easy to forget that both teams were almost neck and neck until that round 20 injury. The expectation for that round 20 clash was immense. Biggest ever home and away crowd, Both teams averaging about 10 goal wins for their last 10 or so games. Kouta gets injured, Bradley gets injured, playing with 2 men down........ Easy to forget the importance of both those players in 2000, especially Kouta. All we remember is Essendon's well deserved 4 and a half goal victory over Carlton and, of course, the premiership triumph over Melbourne .

Truth is, I hate Essendon but at the same time just can't help respect them. I love AFL but witnessing a Carlton/Essendon game, for me, no matter where both teams are the ladder, is the best and most intense sporting event in the world.

True. But, we would have done the same.

Nah, no way would I smugly stand and cheer the first goal in what seemed like an hour for us (or them). Don't get me wrong, I'd be the first to give them a ton of shit, but the way some were carrying on was as if they'd just completed a hat-trick of flags.

I hate Carlton for a number of reasons. First and foremost is 1999. Was there, second tier of the Olympic Stand. My heart broke that day. I went home to find that my brother had whistled the entire Carlton theme song on my answering machine. The hatred was so deep and white hot then and it has been since that day. Carlton is a one dimensional side with one dimensional supporters. Money speaks louder than anything with this club and their motives are questionable. I went to the game today and what this club and their supporters lack is humility and good sportsmanship. Mark my words, as soon as Carlton falters, their supporters will jump off the sinking ship like rats. I went to the Anzac Day match this year and a Collingwood supporter stopped me as I was walking out of the stadium after the game and commented on how well Essendon were travelling and that they gave the Pies a run for their money. Respect. All you get from the Carlton Boneheads is "na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye." Any side that manages to avoid a wooden spoon in all their history then manages three within one decade raises one's eyebrows slightly. I can go on forever as to why I hate Carlton, their supporters, their cockiness, their culture, but I better stop now because I cannot go to bed feeling rage.

Why were they booing Watson???

I'm not sure why the two or three Blues fans around me were booing him. I didn't see it. However, there were quite a number Essendon fans around me who were booing the hell out of him. Several agreed when someone pipped up with "You only get a game because of your Dad."

My reaction was truly WTF? Guy is an out and out star - in doing my Brownlow votes I had him leading it after the first six rounds. I hope no *real* Essendon fan feels that way - that he gets a game because of his Dad.

When you're leaving in the third quarter, as many in my area were doing, those fans really don't deserve much. In fact, an Essendon supporter on my friend was abusing them more than any Carlton fan in my area was. Talking about jumping off ships like rats? That was his expression about your fans.

Last word from me - congrats on a very nice season. No one said you had a hope in hell of making it to the finals. Yeah, there was a lot of crap teams this year but you played some brilliant football. Given the number of injuries that derailed your season for a good month, month and a half you could have done what you did last year and no one could really have faulted you (look at the sympathy Freo are getting). I thought it showed a fair amount of hearts and guts to come back this season. Be proud of your boys. :thumbsu:

Don't believe it.

This happens to every club. Carlton is well known for the third quarter mass exodus.

The truth is all clubs have a select number of w***ers in their supporter groups. This is nothing new. I went to the game today with another mate who is an Essendon supporter, and not once did I give him shit... apart from just a gentle ribbing about Jetta given he's a favourite player of his.

Personally i'm all about good sportsmanship, as I appreciate what it's like to be a club slowly getting off it's knees after being down for the count - even despite the fact I hate Essendon with a passion. That is just part and parcel with football and sport in general.

Some w***ers behind us shouted out something about Heppell being a spud, and that Shuey is a better player. Erm, if he was better he would've won the rising star. This sort of supporting is idiotic, I agree.

This, however, is something I don't have a problem with given I have a massive dislike for people leaving the game early. You stay and support your side no matter the circumstances, and if you're willing to throw in the towel and leave it conveys a lack of passion and support for your club. I saw crowds of people get up and leave early in the last quarter, and yet as soon as they walked out the Bombers kicked 2-3 goals. If you're going to do this you leave yourself open, plain and simple.

Nevertheless, best of luck for Season 2012. :thumbsu:
