Look at the umpire's testimony and I think he's bloody lucky to only get 4 weeks. A decision went against him and Minson has a crack at the umpire, swears at him and pushes him (fairly gently) in the back. Nobody would care if he touches the bloke while having a laugh but touching him in any way while also intimidating him is massively crossing the line.

The thing that gets me is how ****ing moronic Minson must be. Danny Vukovic in the a-league did something not that much different in the a-league years ago:

But just for comparison Vukovic lost it when his team was denied a blatant penalty in the last minute of a Grand Final. He got suspended for 9 months and missed out on competing at the Olympics when he'd played every qualifier. Minson lost it in a random VFL match when the team was miles in front. He's lucky to be playing again this season.

Bit harsh, the umpires requested he be fined. the AFL Tribe have handed down the suspension.
And when Andrew Moore's went to the tribunal, the umpire didn't even remember the incident.

You don't leave the punishment up to those infringed upon... No one is gonna come out and say "they should get weeks!"

Edit: and after reading the above post, I've changed my tune from harsh penalty to about right. If he was swearing at the umpire at the same time he touched him, that's intimidation. Might not have been forceful contact, but if the umpire feels threatened... You're not allowed to touch an umpire.

Fair dinkum, laughable. The AFL is a mess.

That said, Bevo most definitely didn't help the situation with his boneheaded comments in the presser. Showed a lack of class and a lack of experience. The AFL don't take kindly to that, and no doubt they are sending him a message with this ruling.

I've known something's not right with that guy's head ever since I saw him using a prone Kieren Jack's calf muscle for step aerobics practise in a Bulldogs/Swans game in 2012. You could see him go to avoid stepping on KJ, who was sprawled on the field in front of him, but then decide the chance to sprig someone was too good to pass up. Nutjob.

Lucky to only get 4. A lot of people condoning players touching umpires in here.

I grew up believing putting hands on the umpire was the worst thing you could do. Yet in 2009...
Collingwood's Heath Shaw has been suspended for one game and fined $1950 after pleading guilty to making intentional contact with an umpire.

Shaw pushed Michael Vozzo off balance after the field umpire paid a free kick in the second term of last Thursday night's loss to Collingwood at the MCG.
...
Vozzo testified that he reported Shaw because the player had not just touched him, but pushed him slightly off balance.

Vozzo was moving in to break up a minor scuffle when Shaw tried to attract his attention.

It's either a big deal or it's not.

Vision makes the punishment look ridiculous, but the below quote from the young umpire is pretty damning. He won't get off

"From my point of view the expletives were intimidating and the push sent me off my line"

"sent me off my line" give me a break, of course the umps making a big deal out of it since he doesn't want to look like a b$4%h for sending a player off the field for a pat on the back. What a joke.

He's basically getting suspended for more than 4 and a half weeks because he was sent off before half time aswell. This incident is exactly why we can't have the send off rule in AFL, prima donna umps could absolutely destroy games. The last thing we need is giving more power to these power hungry attention seeking prima donnas.

Probably deserved a few weeks like Andrew Moore, I think the four week ban was because of the publicity around the incident. You can't condone people touching the umpires at any level. Won't affect anybody bar his career, I reckon he's finished at the Doggies

I was on the side of he should get off but if the umpire is making statements like this then Minson shouldn't waste his time appealing.
A deliberate 'small' touch whilst being aggressive to an umpire is a suspension every time.

How Many weeks?

Rubbish

Once an umpire red cards a player = instant tribunal hearing and there is only 2 possible outcomes, the player in question gets off the charge and the umpire loses credibility or the decision to red card stands and the player gets multiple weeks.

I'm a grassroots umpire myself, we only red card what we think are serious onfield offences. However, I disagree with the harshness of the penalty of this "contact" thing and it was an overreaction from the umpire in question to pull out the straight red. The process was all wrong, yes report Will, but straight red is over the top.

I don't get why players who consistently give shit to umpires, swear and show obvious dissent week in week out during AFL games are protected with the only punishment a possible 50 metre penalty, but a dumb tap on the shoulder here gets 4 weeks. The players at the top have to show the example and not show dissent, the AFL puts up campaigns about respect towards the umpire for fans but players should be in the same boat also.

I'm saying the outcome was a bit harsh, because if reported correctly the umpires department requested he be fined. I agree with you about the red card process, players aren't allowed to disrespect any official at any level.
