st Kilda winning trade week is perplexing.

Acres Steven & Bruce cancel out Ryder baker & Jones. So they have basically blown there whole 2019 draft plus part of their 2020 draft for hill and Howard. They have 1 top 50 pick total in the next 2 drafts. How is this a win?
Hill improves our ball movement far more compared to an first year player and Howard slots right in as a key defender so 2 instant best 22 players for pick 6, Ryder is loose change but allows us to ensure that Marshall's development will be good and gives roma a good ruck to learn off.

Jones brings some much needed pace too the side and Butler can bring some good culture in from the tigers as well as be an x factor up forward allowing the club to use Gresham more in the midfield.

How have they topped up?

Howard is 23 (iirc), Ryder is ‘only’ 31, Jones is 24, Hill is arguably the best wingman in the game whilst butler is still young and adds depth to a position they wanted to upgrade.

That's what a top up is. it isn't bad as such, it's just the alternate path to investing in thr draft, usually done when a side believes they are reasonably advanced in their list build.

Uh, no.
This draft we have only late picks, obviously that was our plan for this year.
End of 2020 we have 1st, 3rd and 2x 4ths iirc. Plenty you can get packaging those etc.

In the meantime, we have our first two picks from last draft who have not yet played, so we have plenty of youngsters and needed to fill in some other gaps.

“Win, lose”, it’s all opinion, I dont really care - We targeted who we needed, we had five players request to come to us and we got them all.

We don't have a future third, that was given to the Swans for their future 4th. But the rest of your post is spot on.

Some hilariously questionable logic behind the bombers ranking 4th in that article.

Daniher requests a trade, dodoro turns down 2x first round picks in his annual d*** measuring contest, and now they have a disgruntled KPF in their leadership group that will likely walk to the Swans as a free agent next year, netting them a single first rounder at best.

But nah, they grade highly due to "player retention" ignoring the numerous other clubs who didn't have their star player request a trade.

It's not like they had to negotiate to keep Daniher either. Not sure I agree with Bombers that high. I would put them around the 12th region.

Yeah remember when the Lakers didn't trade Kobe to the Bulls when he wanted out? When will sports organizations learn that no success will come if you hold onto players who request a trade. Lakers with Kobe, Swans with O'Keefe, Tigers with Dusty.... when will they learn.

Lol, don't compare Daniher to Kobe. Kobe was a generational talent and the difference between the Lakers being title contenders or lottery pick level so there was no way they could trade him. Daniher might get you a finals win, but isn't gonna push you to a premiership.

O'Keefe is literally the only example that works in your favour, Dusty never requested a trade. Also O'Keefe signed on for 4 years after that trade period, if Daniher does the same then great for the dons, but it's more likely he takes advantage of free agency next year which would be a massive f***up by Essendon.

Carlton. Couldn't do anything with Papley so handcuffed there but if SOS really knocked back 9 for Martin and 15 he is nuts. Once it was clear that Papley wasn't moving then that deal needs to get done. Dees loom large in PSD.

Gold Coast wanted Carlton’s top 10 pick AND future second rounder, which has started as 19 & 21 the last couple of seasons. So Gold Coast wanted pick 9 for Martin and a slide from 15 to 21-ish. Carlton would’ve been nuts to do that deal. They’re simply not at the stage yet of going in so heavy on trades for second tier players.

GC even said it, because they’ve been loaded up on AFL handouts they only wanted cream, but Carlton have actually been worse than GC over the last several seasons; without such gifts from the AFL, we desperately still need our cream.

I’m very happy SOS passed on this. Compared to the alternative of actually doing that trade, it’s a big win.

Wasn’t it Jack Martin + 15 for pick 9?
If that was the scenario, Martin would have cost a six pick slide.
Might have it wrong.

Worth noting that we went into this trade period with 5 players wanting come and pick 6 and 59 to make it happen.

And we've managed to get every one of them and keep our 1st next year as well as holding onto a 2020 3rd and 4th. So we've give up 6 and a future 2nd in terms of picks.

It sucks we weren't able to get something decent for Steven, but the other option was let him walk away from the game.

Bruce is solid but we have King, Membrey and Battle so to replace him with Jones and 51 gives us more speed around the ground.

Acres was not going to be best 22.

To be able to split pick 6, then use 18 to turn 12 into 10 and get Howard and Ryder was great trading.

In reality that Carlton future second isn't going to be pick 21

With Martin - and Papley had you managed to get that done as well
An improving young team adding some best 22 talent - internally you would be aiming for finals, no doubt. - pick 25ish much closer to the mark
With the academy / father sons in next years first 20 - that pick gets pushed out a bit - I dare say in reality its about pick 30.

Ah! Wasn't aware of the extra pick. Fair play to SOS then.

Yeah nah. GC asked for too much and SOS did right to walk away.

I was just commenting on my belief that carlton second rounder would be closer to 30 rather than 21.
I didn't pass any judgement on the decision to accept that or not.
