Winners and Losers of trade week

Obviously it would take a couple of seasons to replace these players.

I just think that Essendon have a ageing spine and a midfield that wouldn’t be in the top 6-8 midfields in the comp.

I don’t really like where Essendon are at. Sure they might be competitive enough to scrape into finals but I don’t see the progression to the next level.
SPOT ON.

Saints must believe they are pretty close because they have really topped up at the expense of the draft.

How have they topped up?

Howard is 23 (iirc), Ryder is ‘only’ 31, Jones is 24, Hill is arguably the best wingman in the game whilst butler is still young and adds depth to a position they wanted to upgrade.

thats four less spots for the kids to get a go

and its questionable how many good young players they have got.

Ever seen Steve play when fit and healthy? Can we get him back to that form? Only time will tell!!
We'll know how this trade plays out come September next year.

Kelly looked a class about in the finals to me.

Geelong are a quality unit but I am unsure how the post Kelly era will unfold. Its a pretty old list too like the Pies, Hawks etc.

Winners are dogs/cats/saints/sydney

Losers Carlton

Sydney are happy Daniher still may want to come and gives Daniher a year to sort shit out

Dogs got Keath for a Bargin

Saints got an A grader in Hill and 3 other best 22 players for pick 6m great result

Cats get Stevens who's an elite mid in hi prime and Jenkins who bolsters the forward. The guy was on trash salary but he's an upgrade on Esta.

Carlton lose. Didn't get either targets.

Losers Adelaide could actually be a win.
Hopefully for there sake they can rid themselves of the toxic environment and rebuild
Had to turnover our list to refresh after the toxicity of the last 2 years... particularly the older players & bring through the next gen whilst keeping the core together.

Minimal changes would have been catastrophic.

It'll take you guys a fair few years of pain to clean the clubs image, but I'd take short term pain for long term gain.

You're too big a club not to turn it around

Top 3 Winners:

St Kilda. Biased, yes, but 2 weeks ago we all assumed it would be 6 for Hill, future 2nd for Jones & a nothing pick for Ryder.

On top of that we moved Bruce on once we won the race for Howard and nabbed Butler for free.

Losing Steven for nothing sucks but his mental health comes first.

Geelong. Lost Kelly but brought in a massive haul. Jenkins and Steven for nothing keeps them in the race for another 2 years while Wells loads up on more kids in the next 2 drafts.

Bulldogs. They didn't get the stopping defender they needed but Keaths intercept work will be a massive plus and while Bruce isn't winning the Coleman, he will straighten up their forward half and take pressure of Naughton & Schache. Keeping 13 for the draft was huge.

Top 3 Losers.

Adelaide. Yep you needed to clear the place out a bit but wowee, I didn't think that meant just giving best 22 players away for nothing. Nick's has a massive job to sort this out.

Melbourne. Is your list going to just magically rebound? Lost their starting fullback and brought their 1st rounder forward a year at the cost of a couple of picks. Need to nail 3 and 8 if they are going to do anything to improve next year. Push the Giants for a live trade on draft night?

Carlton. Couldn't do anything with Papley so handcuffed there but if SOS really knocked back 9 for Martin and 15 he is nuts. Once it was clear that Papley wasn't moving then that deal needs to get done. Dees loom large in PSD.

After removing 37 and 58, both of which came in and went out again, Geelong's total trade period was....

Out:
T.Kelly, Z.Smith
2020: R3 (52)

In:
J.Steven, J.Jenkins
2019: 14, 24
2020: R1 (14), R3 (37)

(Future picks based on positions this year for eagles and suns)

Adelaide also paying part of Jenkins salary.

And the bold is the single reason you still lost. You guys are once again doubling down on a flag that just isnt going to come.

This guy:
"Saints need to give the kids a go!"

Also this guy:
"Saints don't have many good kids!"

If we don't have a heap of good kids then we probably did the right thing in getting younger, ready made options to fill in.

Geelong had a terrific trade period imo. I’m not sure it gets them to the next level, but Geelong are in a superb position for multiple drafts whilst getting cheap ins that will help.

They can basically recycle mature players and get good youngsters simultaneously. Goes to show why Wells is one of the best.

If they get Jack Steven back to his best he covers 90/95% of what kelly can do.

st Kilda winning trade week is perplexing.

Acres Steven & Bruce cancel out Ryder baker & Jones. So they have basically blown there whole 2019 draft plus part of their 2020 draft for hill and Howard. They have 1 top 50 pick total in the next 2 drafts. How is this a win?

I guess the difference is getting rid of some stale players who are a bit static and not really improving, and Steven who doesn't even want to be there... for people that want to be there and have a lot of upside to them. So even if they cancel out in terms of current playing ability, that extra motivational part could be 30% extra towards effort in games.

my points was more maybe the saints need to organically get some more high draft picks before topping up

im not sure how they will go in future years against carlton, melbourne, suns, gws who seem pretty stacked in that department

Winners - Saints, Dogs, Eagles, Bombers
Losers - Power, Crows, Swans, Blues

How are Essendon a winner? A net result of Cutler and Phillips makes them winners? They haven’t addressed their biggest need with an inside mid.

Keeping Daniher doesn’t make them winners. Winning would have been getting overs for him. If the goal was just to keep him all along, why even enter into negotiations?

Given we were expected to lose two of our best forwards I’d say trade week has been a huge success. Add some midfield depth and a solid ruck back up and it’s a win in my book.

In reference to your last question, every player has a price, unfortunately for the Swans they couldn’t afford it...

Saints must believe they are pretty close because they have really topped up at the expense of the draft.

Heard Paddy Ryder on the radio today being interviewed, was very upbeat saying <words to the effect of> "Saints were only two games away from the 8" hence, they should contend next year...

He's obviously a glass half full kinda guy.
