And that’s relevant how?

And yeh, still don’t expect us to make finals next year, but Hill, Jones and Howard are all in a good age bracket moving forward.
Saints come close to "winning" trade period almost entirely off the back of the Howard/Ryder deal. You guys got an absolute steal. Managed to effectively turn Pick 6, future 2nd and a couple late picks into Hill, Howard and Ryder. Seriously jealous that you guys were the ones to land Howard, he's going to be a star

We didn't downgrade an early draft pick to a pick in the late 20's.

We swapped first round draft picks with Melbourne and added an additional second and third round draft pick...

If you listen to our recruiting manager, it's pretty simple, he rates the top 30 extremely evenly this year and prefers next years first round.

Extremely tidy bit of trading. I'm rapt, personally.

Yep. Dogs did well, shaded the Saints I have to say. (That hammer Cleary only ranked us number one as he was shocked anyone good would nominate us. Him and Glasses are serial haters.)

We did alright, despite having a losing hand in the case of Jack Steven...

A big raspberry to Geelong, who are now proclaimed to be Trade Geniuses just because they were too tight to spend their pick 37 on Jack despite his clear quality, knowing full well he'd go to them or retire, only to fling it to the Crows for Ham Jenkins.

Well I suppose I'm bitter. Realistically Jack is clearly unwell and despite his career up to 2018 being worth easily more than a 3RDP, Geelong can't be certain they'll get any service out of him and fair enough. I hope he gets better but if he does, it will really burn that the Cats got him for next to nothing).

Freo did ok, ditto the Suns, Crows needed to get out a few and did but didn't get much back. No one else did that well from what I can see.

Yes, but the difference being that Adelaide gave us Gold Coast's 3rd rounder in return, which should be roughly p40 or so.

Fair enough. You werent exactly starved of picks though, you could have been a bit more good natured with Steven. No big deal.

Do you know if the final deal ended up with some of his salary still being paid by the Saints?

I was just commenting on my belief that carlton second rounder would be closer to 30 rather than 21.
I didn't pass any judgement on the decision to accept that or not.
Next year will be more about points than live picks. 21 is worth a lot of points and will be valuable on the trade table. It's unlikely that many picks in the second and third round get used for players at all. We could have a weird situation where a late 1st rounder slides to the late twenties and an early fourth rounder gets used in the late thirties as the picks between them dissolve into points.

You appear to be on top of the draft arrangements but to the outside observer the rules seem to be as unnecessarily complex as how yr 12ATAR scores are calculated

Problem was that you didn't have a pick in the early to mid 40s to give back! To be fair, I think we got burnt a bit by Mitch Clark. No idea about salary arrangements.

I know it's a bit harsh to only get p58, but we didn't have one between that and 37.

Dogs big winners you’d think.

If you asked yourself at the start what would Bulldogs need that would be a mature plug and play kpf and a mature plug and play kpd to add to a finals side and strong midfield.

They got both but kept pick 13.

Yep. Will make a real push next year. I think Bruce will fit in well

Doggies and hawthorn are big winners. Got players in who will walk into there best team whilst keeping low picks

I don't think it's any secret that the Blues were losers. "D" grade period. Eddie for a song is fine, Pittonet young ruck backup is solid, but having two quality players who fit a need nominate and closing neither is somewhere between very disappointing and catastrophe.

I think Cats and Dogs got ludicrous bargains in Steven and Bruce respectively.

Losers: Blues, Dons and Swans.

Im big on getting players either to your club, or from your club, if they nominate.

Salient point. Players (and managers) watch how effectively and quickly clubs can get such deals done when they are choosing a club to nominate.

I find it weird that Essendon are being rated so highly by the media for the trade period.

Not sure you can be in in the top few teams for doing very little when ‘in the premiership window’ but still not being good enough. They finished bottom of the 8 and got kicked out in the first week of finals, that is a huge amount of natural development needed for them to be a contender next season.

Winners: Saints, Hawks, Geelong, Dogs, Brisbane, WC
Losers: Carlton, Port, Essendon, Giants
Broke even: Adelaide, Roos, Pies, Freo, GC, Melb, Rich, Syd

if fit he plays round one. We aren’t waiting for him to develop etc.

That’s the definition of plug and play

Winners: Dogs and WCE
What they did is make themselves flag favs with richmond.
I reckon Dogs win 2020 flag now. Bevo is the greatest. For dogs or saints to win a flag is amazing. We are up against it.

Dogs knew saints and crows HAD to get rid of bruce and keath - 2 very good positional players.
Dogs NEEDED them badly but held strong kept 13 and got massive boost for very little.

Saints big winners also, as long as
a steven never plays good
b max king steps up

Saints still need elite mids. To give away steven hurts but got the feeling he maybe cooked anyway.

Losers:
Carlton and Sydney. Ouch. Missed out on players they went hard for. Gave away decent talent inside their 22.

Crows and Port - not good. SA is in tatters whats going on? Missed taegets gave away good players. Shopped stars around. Wont be happy places. What the hell happened on that camp!?!?
Did they make players kiss and fondle or something? weird

Got to laugh how group-think works sometimes. The media falling over themselves to paint Carlton as losers and SOS as 'shattered' is simply bs. I get that people love sticking the boots into Carlton, but it's pretty absurd some of the things that are being said...

Carlton refused to be bent over for an OoC player in Martin. Whilst we certainly want him, he isn't the kind of player to release a top 10 pick for nor pay overs for (even more so when OoC). Pick 9 could be worth every bit of pick 4 in this draft and we have a strong chance to pick Jack up for free by overpaying him for a period, in the PSD. I'm clapping that we stuck to our list management strategy knowing the the public and media heat would come and deciding not to care anyway. Shows maturity and good planning.

Everyone was well aware Papley is contracted to Sydney, the length of this doesn't matter. He came out himself and said that he hopes a trade can be done, but will be professional if Sydney hold him to his contract. Everyone was on the same page here and SOS said they were clear that if Daniher didn't get through, neither would Papley. But hysteria ensues regardless. It sounds to me like Sydney and Carlton, who have a solid, professional trading relationship, were all mature and aware of the situation. Contracts should mean something, something Carlton and its fans know all about.

It's ok to disagree and bang on with your hyperbole about how no players will ever nominate us again, how embarrassing that we didn't get our targets, SOS is inept blah blah blah blah. I am extremely comfortable with what has transpired.

haha..the crows still finish above carlton based on flag odds - even after the sh1t show that has happened to our club over the last 2 seasons and with all the player movement and change in coach. In reality the odds mean very little and the crows could really have a down year and carlton could improve further

Its interesting. Are we asking who won the trade period in terms of what they did or who they lost/gained?

Fremantle are massive losers - they lost 2 gun wingers when if they had added a couple of guns like keath and bruce may have been in flag contention.

Where does this put them on the clock now? bit of no mans land.

BUT freo did well in the trade period. They got overs for Hill and aish/acres are ok gets. Still lost big though.

Same with Geelong. Lost Kelly but did well in trading so get what I mean?
