Winners and Losers of trade week

WINNERS
Freo did extremely well when you consider the position they were in before the trade period.

Geelong have had an all-time great trade period for the club, when you consider that Kelly was basically out the door anyway.

Hawks underrated this period, paid very little for their guys and still hold strong draft hand.

Saints pulled off an incredible trade coup with Howard/Ryder, and had an all around very good period.

Goes without saying that I'm ecstatic with the Dogs.

LOSERS
Carlton, holy shit what on earth did you do

Essendon picking up another speedy half back/winger when they needed an inside mid, where have I seen this before?

Saints did well, still have concerns over their Bruce trade, but did everything else right. Their depth has been added to and got some excellent players in they still have much improvement left in them.

I do feel as if Bruce was an unforced error on their part. They didn’t commit to him longer do they lost on. Saints did well but that is one potential worry.

KPF is my only major list concern for the immediate with the saints, and maybe midfield class, but the latter can be overcome by a decent game plan. King will hopefully sort that out long-term.

Bruce should have been retained. Ryder and Marshall aren’t capable of replicating his output next year.

WB:

IN: Bruce, Keath, 2020 Rd 3 pick
OUT: pick 32, pick 45, pick 51, 2020 Rd 2 pick

Two players you'd expect to slot into the 22 in, at worst a future pick in the 20s out.

GWS:

IN: pick 6, future 4th
OUT: pick 12, pick 18, Jonathan Patton (salary dump)

Into the top 6 in the draft after making the GF, got Patton where he wanted to go and shored up their salary cap position.

Props to GC also. Didn't accept a dud trade for Martin, re-signed King and resisted any temptation to trade picks 1 and 2 for magic beans.

I don't think WC, Geel, St Kilda, Freo etc. are clear winners or losers because they all had valuable assets in play.

Freo probably did the best in terms of improving their draft position but lost Brad Hill and Ed Langdon in the process. That's 3 and 5 from the B&F gone and Mundy finished 4th and is 34 years old.

Geelong's trade week is interesting. Got more picks than I thought they would for Kelly (I expected our best 2 or 3 picks, not all of our picks) then added Steven for nothing and Jenkins for a bit more than nothing. I can only assume St Kilda aren't paying for Steven next year while Adelaide are for Jenkins. They'll be a 10-16 win side next year, they always are.

Not really sure what's cooking down at Ikon Park. Linked to a bunch of players, didn't really land any of them.

Hawthorn get a D- from me this year. Patton for pick 900 rustled some jimmies but they have fallen away from the glory years of O'Meara, Scully and Wingard which genuinely slowed down the D&T board refresh rate.

I've not got an issue with you giving Hawks a D-, but I'm just interested in how you can also have dogs at the top.

Both clubs signed a key defender, a key forward, gave up nothing, kept/gained points for their bids and kept their 1st round pick!

Hawks only get a D- for not turning melting any servers. It's tradition.

Frost and Patton should work out OK. Both fill areas of need, remains to be seen if Patton can get back to full fitness. IMO Bruce and Keath are better pick ups, even for the higher price paid.

Jenkins and Stevens is longterm?

They are still going for a flag in 2020.
No but 14, 17, 24 and 36 are long term.
As is (assuming same ladder positions for all) 14, 17, 35 and 38 in 2020.

I think we are throwing all our eggs in the max king basket.
I hope it works out but 32 and 51 for Bruce I can live with

Doggies did well, No

How are WCE's winners?? They gave up so much for Kelly, if anything the came out equal on that trade.
They'll be top 4 next year and they've added one of the best 20 players in the comp. In the now it's definitely a win.

The wraps are massive on Max King though. As good as Ben King has looked up forward at AFL level, Max was obviously considered better up forward than him prior to him doing his knee, so if he lives up to anything like his potential then him and Membrey as a starting point is very good.

Then there's Ryder/Marshall for potentially the next 1-2 years and of course Josh Battle got pushed back to defence because Carlisle was injured and we had (at the time) Bruce, McCartin and Membrey, so if need be we can always swing Battle back to the forward line. Where he showed heaps of promise last year.

Howard coming in means Battle can go forward again. Only went back due to injuries

Membrey, King, Battle with a resting ruck

Can't fit them all in

Stevens was a bargain but Jenkins cost a 2nd.

Are Geelong rebuilding or contending? Can't do both.
No. Jenkins cost next to nothing.
Crows paying a significant amount of his salary and the 3rd rounder we got back for next year is the Suns. So should be before 40.

Pick 37 for likely pick 40 or better... and don't have to pay him in full.
The trade period equivalent of being traded for a packet of chips and a can of coke.
