To see how soft our game has become. You used to be able to fight, melee, bump to the head, tackle much harder, and make it a battle of bloody strength. You only have to watch past massive hits and the resultant melees from them to see how good our game used to be, it had that extra dynamic. Now we have been softened up by an overweight arrogent corporate s**tstain.

Watch a rugby match, while still less entertaining they can still belt the shit out of each other and it's good to watch. Why has it become so soft? why cant you fight and melee? As far as i'm concerned I have NEVER seen ANYONE is the past DIE from such a tough specticle it used to be. So the question remains... why is there a constant need to tamper the game when it was fine and loved by the whole country.

If you think it's too rough and hard dont play it ffs, it should be a brave, hard, and brilliant game. Not soft basketball crap (no offence I love basketball). It's time to revert the rules back 20 years and keep necessary changes (i.e. rushed behind rule, prior opportunity etc.).

Nothings going to change by bantering on the forum because the fat biscuit-eating hippo is sitting back laughing at us... it's time to protest... to save our great game before it is further tarnished and softened to the point where the basic fundamentals such as bumping and melee's are taken out forever.

Great post, and I agree completely. Although I'm not a massive fan of the melee, I'm not against it at all. So long as there's no dirty eye gouging or anything going on.

As you said about not seeing anyone die, that's a good point. I haven't even heard of any serious injury from a big bump. I know that's ignorant and that it would have happened, but injuries happen all the time in daily life. There's far more dangerous ways to get injured. I'm all for protecting the head and what not, but if it's unintentional a free kick and 50m is all that should come of it.

I agree about the bump, though the melee is only good as an occasional thing. More than once or twice a season and it just becomes irritating.

So soccer that doesnt show violence but has become a more skillful game has increased in popularity

Gridiron doesnt have the brawls and melees yet its popularity is increasing

Aussie Rules has become more skillful and is stamping violence out of the game is popular as it ever has been...

Hey if you want to watch a repetitive gang tackle game then Rugby is for you...;)

Get over the anger towards Rugby people..
the man has a point

whether it be a real sport or not it's DAMN entertaining to watch for the tough tackles and hell that is one aspect of the game that we need.

when I watch NRL and some ref falls over I just think haha. without worrying about legal issues.
when someone swears at a ref the ref just tells him to calm down.

when you do either to an afl umpire its just ridiculous. hell ive seen players share jokes with the refs before onfield.
this game is becomin so darn precious

Rugby, don't care if its league or union it's a crap sport.

Fights and melee's dont add anything to our sport. It detracts from it, also when you get home from the footy there's 600 threads about it and they are crap too.

Ever heard of MMA? You can watch people belt the shit out of each other until your heart's content. We'll stick to watching a real sport.

Exactly. If people want to watch fights so much, go watch boxing or MMA. I'm suprised they're not clearly the world's biggest sports, considering this massive taste for violence people seem to have lately  Fighting has never been a proper part of our game, and has always been a penalisable offense. The reason why people got away with so much more in the past was because there were less umpires, less television cameras, less 'trial-by-video' from the Match Review Panel, and less media scrutiny. The AFL (as they should) are obviously trying to make the game about football, and stamping out the 'belting blokes for the sake of it' crap that went on in the past.

Tackling today is better than it ever has been.

Melees, while entertaining, aren't a reflection of the physicality of the game. It's tough putting your head over the footy or going back with the flight of the footy, not engaging in a brawl with the opposition.

I think most people are against intentional bumps to the head - it is dangerous. They're professional footballers, not gladiators. There does need to be a certain level of protection. Though they've got to ease up on incidental contact to the head. It's a fast game and you've got a split second to make up your mind. Shit happens.

So you reckon youve got to have a melee or a fight to make our AFL game tough do you.If you think our game is soft try telling that to Alex Rance or Sellwood after their head clash earlier in the year or any player who runs back with the flight of the ball knowing they are about to be crunched in the act.If you get off on watching blockheads getting tackled every 5 seconds in a dull boring game called rugby then i suggest you defect over to the other side but calling the game soft is just ridiculous to say the least

I don't understand all the shithead comparisons between football (soccer) and aussie rules. Stop with the brainless hyperbole and start taking a more realistic approach.

Small bloke named Liberatore begs to differ.

The small bloke named Liberatore whose best tackling season (1994, 5.92 tackles per game) would be ranked 10th in the league in 2009? ;)

Libba was a great tackler, and probably the best of his era, but tackling has certainly improved across the league since the '90s.

Thugby is boring as batshit..end of story ..Aussie rules has 10 times the entertainment value of those nethanderals running at each other and shoving their noses up their opponents butts ....anyone who thinks rugby is more entertaining that footy is on the wrong forum.

As for the OP what a lot of complete immature garbage ..thuggery has no place in our game, and it's good to see it's been cleaned up from the bad old days of players like Carl Ditterich, Robert Muir, Ronnie Andrews, Mal Brown running around trying to maim any player within reach ...i suggest the OP stick to watching championship wrestling where it is all staged to excite pre pubescent boys.

There is no place for thuggery, but I do think the game is worse off because the fear factor has been removed.

Players no longer have to concern themselves with the thought that they may get knocked out because every player entering a contest has a duty of care not to hit the other guy in the head.

Whcih code are you talking about?
I doubt you've ever been to a rugby league game. If you say you have, then I don't believe you.
Rugby league has 50 times the tackling the Aussie Rules has. League also doesn't have the bum-sniffing scrums either - at least not to the extent that union has, but I doubt you know any of that.

Well considering this is football, where the aim is to score more than the opposition team, and not boxing, where the aim is to KO your opponent (or at least land enough punches to win on points), then isn't that actually a good thing?

Then **** off and follow rugby.

The game has become very soft.

If you actually believe that, then you've probably never played a game in your life.

Sure, the Franklin suspension was a joke. But despite that, if you think the game is soft, then you don't have a clue. Go down to a state league game, go and sit on the boundary line fence and listen to how hard the players hit each other in packs and contests. Then multiply it by 2 for the AFL.

i would hope you don't mean union - the game can barely get a try across the line to save itself. the game is not in great shape and rules/refereeing are a concern there as well.

footy has made its mission clear. FASTEST game on earth is the catchphrase. the physicality is going out, speed coming in.

the irony is, soccer is not necessarily about speed, it's about movement. while the rugby codes are about a combination of physicality and persistence with speed a consequence of being successful at the former two.

i don't think footy is in that good a place. i've found listening to games on radio is a lot more interesting than actually watching a lot of the time. listening on radio you visualise the good and unless the commentators labour on it, you don't visualise a lot of the fumbles and turn-overs which are the consequence of the high-paced game. also "old school" footy like suburban or country where the pace is slower and the game plan is more traditional offers a good viewing spectacle.
