Stiffy , lets be honest its VERY VERY hard to trade for quality KPP that ARENT headcases - especially without having to trade a very top draft pick (Croad) that the Crows have never had (or the 'power' of threatening the PSD as per Mc Pharlin or Hamill/Gehrig). I think your list supports my theory
How so?!

You asked for quality KPP that were traded. Now Corad was traded back to Hawks for pick 10. Gherig was traded to St Kilda for pick 18. Yes thats right, pick 18. Barry Hall was traded to Sydney for picks 11 and 17. Nathan Thompson was a 1st and 2nd round draft pick.

And plese can you stop this "headcase" bull********. Does is really matter that a player is different to what you would class as good citizen. Tony Modra wasn't exactly an angel in his time but I am pretty sure none of us complained.

Here is a newsflash, just like any other human being, these people mature as they grow. Its a natural human growth process. And I must say, you labeling Nathan Thompson as a headcase just because he suffers from depression is way way below the belt. Just because he is suffering from depression it doesn't mean that he is a headcase. In fact, you could argue that he is anything but a headcase.

And just how recent do you want to go. Why limit the pool to recent trades when a larger pool would give a better picture. Even Tarrant got traded this year is you consider him as a KPP.

There is not many key forwards that are not or have not been headcases at some stage. Pavlich and Riewoldt are rarity. Ever thought of actually giving people a clean slate rather than classing them all in the too hard basket?

And what exactly has Nathan Thompson done that was worse than Roo's antics in the Ramsgate or Goody's incident with the photographer?! Would you call them headcases?!

You can get a talented KPP if you are willing to pay for it. Just because you are not prepared to pay the price doesn't mean they are not available

Stiffy I asked for "recent examples of consistently quality KPP acquired through trading - that arent basket cases'. In my view you have listed very few.

You name:

Players traded 6-10 years ago - certainly not recent:

Mal Michael
Anthony Rocca

Players that were traded to the BOTTOM club (ie massive power differential when it came to trading as these players could have walked out for nothing in the PSD. I dont see the Crows have such 'bargaining' power in years to come)

Luke McPharlin
Trent Croad
Gherig
Hamill

Players that are borderline quality and were also traded many many moons back

The Wakelin Twins

An inconsistent yet capable of being a quality player suffering acute mental illness, ie depression (I formally withdraw the basketcase term for PC reasons)

Nathan Thompson

And the pick of your list

Barry Hall - who admittedly was a big trouble maker at the Saints on and off the field and early on at Swans on field also. The Swans also have an extra 10-15 % salary cap allowing them to financially target such quality players - a luxury the Crows dont have

My point was contrary to others overly simplisitic 'lets trade for KPP strategy' is that it is VERY VERY hard to trade and get quality reliable KPP. I stand by this point

Given the number of trades which occur each year it makes it pretty difficult not to go back a few years. Otherwise the pool is very small.

Pretty poor call on Nathan Thompson too. Suffering from depression hardly makes him a 'headcase'.

yeah thats wat i ment reid tran 2.93 and is 196 cm tall adelaide would love that and plus he can play on the wing

would love to see us get this kid. :thumbsu:

He's bottom aged now and only qualifies by a couple of days IIRC. Skinny now, but has put good weight on since the start of the year - which obviously hasn't effected his speed. Seems to me that he will fill out (given a couple of preseasons in the gym). I wouldn't be sujrprised if he was to not get picked up (not going to happen I know) and enter next years draft he would easily be in the top 5. Can play both ends and can play as a KPP as well as a flanker.

Draft "critical" to club
4:05:45 PM Wed 22 November, 2006
Andrew Montesi
from afc.com.au

Crows recruiting manager James Fantasia believes that Saturday’s NAB AFL Draft is “critical” for the Adelaide Football Club.

With a number of senior players entering the twilight period of their careers, Fantasia and his team have the responsibility of securing the future of the club for the years to come.

“There’s always a lot of pressure on you, to make sure that we get those early picks that will support the football club and move forward,” Fantasia said.

With youngsters such as van Berlo, Maric, Porplyzia, Knights and Vince showing early potential at AFL level, Fantasia is looking forward to adding to the list of quality young players in the Crows squad.

“We have been reasonably successful over the last couple of years with some of our young players moving in to AFL footy reasonably early in their careers,” he said. “Here’s an opportunity for us to add a few more quality players of developing standards who will be ready to go in the next 12 months to 24 months.”

Adelaide will enter the draft with picks 14, 32, 48 and 64. With Adelaide’s first pick being near the end of the first round, the Crows recruitment team cannot be sure of who will be available when their turn arrives.

“We’re going through a very diligent process at the moment, going through our (list) of players, as you do, and on the day we’re going to have to make a decision, no doubt,” Fantasia said.

“What we’ve got to do is estimate some scenarios, in terms of who we might be able to pick or who might be there. And in doing that, it’s taking in the tall type players, it’s taking in the midfield players, and if that happens I think the rest of the draft gets dictated to as well.

“Once you’ve been able to take one type of player, you might be able to focus in on another type.”

Fantasia, who will be entering his 12th national draft this weekend, expects greater value from the later picks than in previous years.

“People have talked about this being a super draft, and from my experiences you would think that it is probably reasonably deep, numbers wise,” Fantasia said. “And when you talk about those numbers, it’s probably fair to say that this year’s second round draft picks, would most likely to be first round draft picks in other years. So if you do your numbers, it’s probably pretty deep.”

Adelaide’s preference will be to add height to its list, however Fantasia believes that, like most other AFL clubs, the best player available will be drafted.

“If we’re in a situation where players are pretty similar, arguably we’ll go for the taller player, at this stage,” he said. “But like most clubs will tell you, we’re after the best players possible.

“We have a range of players who we believe will come into our top 14, if you like. And being number 14, we’re not sure which players will be there, but we believe that it will be a very good player.”

Fantasia believes that many South Australian youngsters could potentially find themselves at an AFL club following Saturday’s draft.

“I think South Australia stacks up very well in relation to the quality of talent that’s here (in the draft),” he said. “It’s never easy to know what that would equate to in numbers; first round, second round draft picks and things like that. I think it holds us in good stead, because down the track (in the draft), when it does get a bit closer, if there is a South Australian player or an interstate player it certainly gives us the advantage to go for a local player.”

I'm pretty sure Burgan's Phantom Draft will be out tomorrow, Stiffy.

My ideal draft result is for us to select the best players available at our picks.

Thanks mate :thumbsu:

I am looking forward to it.

My ideal draft would see us draft Gibbs, Gumleton, Hansen, Selwood and Leuenberger just so we can have the 3 headed ruck monster (Leuenberger -Meesen - Maric) to scare the ******** out of our opponents :D

Anyone know when Matt Burgan's Mock Draft is coming out? Surely its in the next day or 2

It is definitely tomorrrow (Thursday), Stiffmeister.

Allegedly at noon, but they always say that and it's a couple of hours late.

Always a fantastic read, and far closer to the actual draft results than any of the mock drafts elsewhere - about 30% right.

i think the crows dream would be for sellers. A tall forward from adelaide, he looks the dark horse as no one really knows where he will go anywhere between 5 and 20 depending on what clubs are looking for.
I think the Crows are rapt in this pick. Many rate Sellar as good a prospect as Gibbs.
