Autopsy Cats lose to Saints by 7 points - should have been more

Hawks won’t play as well as that.

Yes they will. Beautiful left kickers in their team and they have speed to burn. Also have a physical ruck to stick the knees into Blicavs and De Koning at every opportunity. Hawthorn game could get ugly after we have belted them for years on end (revenge match it will be for Hawthorn).

Hmmm. He had some good moments and some bad moments. I thought he panicked under pressure at times, and there were some extemely soft tackle attempts. I don't think there's enough to say yet that he's as good as 2022 SDK.

That said I do agree some of his marking looked great and you can see the talent there.
He's also i think a year younger than Sam was in 2022. I think he's tracking ahead. I feel confident when he has it in his hands

Troll me again about how shit umpiring wasn't our problem. It sure mattered with 3 unpaid in the last five minutes.
Including a mark over the boundary line, but yes, them's the breaks.
Footy games last for a whole 120 minutes and the free kick count went our way across that period of time.

Difficult loss to swallow given St Kilda's recent record against us; they might be a bog-average AFL side but they match up well against us and fancy they can outwork us; the writing was on the wall all week that the two sides were liable to reverse their fortunes and so it proved.

Congratulations to them on a pretty resounding win.

Setting the bitter taste of defeat to one side I genuinely thought there were some exciting signs tonight.

Connor O'Sullivan's development might well indeed be just as accelerated as the club has suggested.
He showed a ton tonight.
Reminds me of the early days of Barry Stoneham; a tall-but-agile player shoehorned into the back line who nonetheless shows a lot of talent early on despite some physical vulnerabilities.

Mitch Knevitt's contribution in a big win last week was mildly encouraging imo; far more heartening to see him really dig deep against the tide tonight. Stats not that impressive but I liked his application; his intensity increased as the game went along.

Ted Clohesy is one that I've not been particularly high on but there is no arguing with his contribution once Tom Stewart went down this evening. Clohesy did not look out of place, could have kicked 3 but as it was chipped in with 2 much-needed goals and consistently put his noggin over the ball.

Jhye Clark looked spark-y at times. Still has plenty to work on but continues to show flashes of his pathway to success as an AFL player. Rushed the disposal at times again tonight by hand and foot.

But there's no getting past the fact that our midfield, with Smith out, looked pretty tepid, particularly with Max Holmes subdued for much of the 1st half (fought back strongly though).

Not sure where Jack Bowes is at; a combined 19 disposals as a midfielder in the past two weeks. I appreciate he does a lot of grunt work. But he isn't getting much of the ball.

Oisin Mullin is running out of admirers, offered very little tonight.

Dangerfield was required to put in a much longer shift than he did last week and he stepped up as needed; Pat not-unreasonably fought for a 2-rather-than-1 year extension on his contract in the off-season; if he wants to play on in 2026 then I think he'll still be needed at CBA right to the end.

Bad loss, Brisbane in Qld next week is it?

We will beat em.

Ruckman desperately needed. Dekoning is neither a ruckman or a footballer. He severaly lacks intensity and desperation.

Dangerfield isn't a forward. If you're unreliable in front of goal or can't make the distance with 20m snaps stick to what you know.
Just showed the saints why they should pull the $1 million per season offer from
him

Watch how he went about it. The class by hand and vision you can't teach it and his defensive efforts are fantastic. The problem is his body is nowhere near strong enough for the role he needs to be playing.
It okay progress but not worth high praise as having played a good game. It was some progress, and that's about it.

We went over this last season. The great mids of the comp, even 1-3 year players get 25+. Our 2nd tier mids getting 15-20 doesn't impress me. It's the bare minimum for midfielders.

Are you underestimating how good the saints first half was? Hawks won’t play as well as that.

No, I'm not.

I posted a few times how well the Saints played.

Hawthorn have done that for 3 games straight now.

We've played 2 games, and have barely played 4 good quarters. The other 4 have been poor.

We'll also likely be without Stewart and quite possibly Baz.

Butchered our I[emoji6][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]] entries and lacked composure. Our game is not built for that ground so I wouldn’t lose sleep.

Young kids will learn a bit.

And for those who said pick Duncan. Crikey - he would’ve been horribly exposed on that ground. Great we got a look at Clohesy. He looks a likely type.

As for Mullin. Keep playing him. With Bews out long term Mullin has to get games. He’s playing a role in an area where we’re exposed - defending small forwards. Be patient

Cameron was moved to the wing after halftime as he was having next to no impact up forward in the first half

We needed to switch things up, and that was a pretty obvious move to make to try and get him into the match and also give our forward line a different look

I can imagine that if we didn't make any moves at halftime that there would have been complaints about trying to do the same old thing and expecting a different result
Yes we tried and nothing good came from it so send him deep and say compete! He was trying to get cheap possesions in the back half and wasn’t even doing that well. He looked off tonight just needed to be told don’t lose a contest and we will be happy let our small forwards go to work.

I hope you're right, but I don't see them play as lazily as we do from time to time either.

We must bring the effort because they are all effort. But if we do you will see the mistakes in them. I hope we are mentally switched on.

Yep- it won’t be easy but we can knock them off. It’s a long season.
How long is baz out for?

Don’t think it was as bad as everyone is making out. It’s a long season, but it was great to see the fight back led by youngsters. Knevitt, Clohesy, O’Sullivan and Clark all had really strong passages. If that’s our depth comes the dog days of July/august, I think we are going to be just fine. Our team will learn so much from that L, put it in the rear view, and move forward.

Caddy has the same problems Henry does and you can't carry 2 of that type in modern footy. No loss there. The only player I would have taken instead was Wilson and I was very strong on him pre draft but that would have been a line ball call. Given our need for talls it was the right one.
I did like Wilson but I would have been a bit iffy taking him as early as our pick

The best alternative to mullin would be use to free agency to bring in a specialist who can actually play the position properly.
I agree on clohesy.

Trolling not required. Umpires were not why we lost. We lost because we were second to the ball for a full half of footy

I never said our football wasn't shabby, it would be trite to say the Umps were totally at fault.
So I would agree with you if there was no comeback. The proof in the pudding, no umpiring breaks for us in the last five.
Anyway negatives are fine- the positive is for our undermanned fight that seen STK throw away a huge lead.

I wasn't on that as much as some (clearly some clubs were as he slid). But to me his champs were great and he was always an elite endurance player with good disposal on both sides. I didn't see a bust risk. Worse case you get an ed langdon type from that best case you get a star. He's the plan B I would have taken but immaterial now.

This. Was clearly our best player in the first half. Needs the Zac Guthrie development arc of 10kegs of muscle.

Clark is exactly the same as zuthrie. Rarely if ever makes a poor decision but has the body of an under 14s kid which is more of an issue for an inside mid than a back pocket.
