Fair bit to unpack with that game.

Lippa is an upgrade on Treloar. Kind of weird how that has all played out.

Grundy was really quiet early. However, his last quarter was insanely good. Absolutely went to town at the centre bounces.

That's the De Goey we need week in, week out.

I thought our defence stood up well, albeit exposed a few times, but that was the nature of the game.

Moore was huge late v King.

N and J Daics are such smooth movers. Our new manic game style suits a guy like Sidey perfectly.

Finally, we're going to have a lot of fun watching the trio of Henry, Ginnivan and McCreery over the years. 3 natural forwards who all bring different attributes that compliment each others games beautifully.

Awesome start to the season.

We can get better.

A few senior players had “ almost” games and will be better for the run

Crisp… was good but not his best game
Grundy .. awesome in the last and part of the centre clearance domination all night, but timing his marking and rucking was off at times, and as a result gave away some ruck frees
Sidebottom… back to his best but only 18 possessions means he can get even better. Looks slimmer.
Elliot… was in a lot of contests but didn’t get too much clean ball.
DeGoey.. didn’t do a lot wrong…we will win more than we lose if he brings that every week… good to see him rack up some easy possessions as well as winning the hard ball… but he could have kicked four goals.
Cox… slow start as the team was adjusting to the new game plan and the ball didn’t come near him… but finished the game off with trademark contested marks when needed. Missed a goal he’d usually kick.
Moore… a bit rusty offensively but defensive game was superb. First game after injury so will get his creative mojo back in no time
Pendles … a few rushed disposals

We gave away some easy goals to them and still made some really bad errors, but it is only Rd1 and 4 points is 4 points.
Umpiring favoured us which was nice but that won't happen all the time.
Very young players playing chaos football will do that, it will happen - sometimes more and sometimes less through the season and perhaps early next season.

There just are no short cuts with extreme youth, they have to learn the hard way.

Agreed Cox pretty much did nothing, but I actually thought he had some important moments in the last quarter, took a couple of important marks. He stays in the side for mine, see if he can kick a few next week against the Crows.

Happy to see Bianco again given he’s young, the thing I like about him is he’s ball use, for too long we’ve played plodders who can’t kick, this kid can kick, unfortunately I think the time of the Brown brothers might be coming to an end.

Let’s just pray for once that we get to have a clean bill of health so that we can finally see what this list has to offer at full capacity.

Hope you’re joking about Bianco. He’s young but not up to it right now. He’s very slow and missed an easy shot on goal. 7 disposals and 2 turnovers.

McRae's post match presser:

Congratulations, how do you describe your feelings after your first win as coach particularly after being challenged at certain stages of the match?

What is the "DNA"?

What was the message at 3QT?

There was a lot of pressure on Nick Daicos and he delivered on the big stage. How impressed were you that dekivered

How impressed were you that Nick [Daicos] was able to keep his composure despite St Kilda's attempts to rough him up a bit?

What did you make of De Goey tonight?

Another fresh face in Patrick Lipinski. How did you see his performance tonight?

Is it a clean bill of health on the injury front?

What happened with Darcy Moore. He spent the first 10-12 minutes off in the second quarter

You must be rapt with Jordan De Goey despite all the talk about him over the pre-season. He didn't come back until January and he played one practice game and to come in tonight and have 30 touches and 2 goals was impressive.

How have you assessed him [De Goey] over the past 2-3 months in terms of the off field issues.

Jeremy Howe back out there and seeing him take a few hangers. How pleasing was it to see him out there after a big injury run?

Pendles down back. Were you happy with that?

What about the way you moved the ball. It's an area Collingwood has struggled in. It looked like you played with more risk, dare and an appetite to go up the middle. You would have been happy with that especially with 102 points registered on the scoreboard.

In light of what happened at Carlton, will you adjust any Covid protocols at the club with training and etc?

What was it like being in the box for the first time as a senior coach?

Thanks for this, was watching the presser in bed last night on Kayo and was livid when they cut the presser off half way through to go to the show with Dal Santo and the two other flogs.

I know he had a bad game, but I’m not putting him out of the side just yet, he’s 21 and played 12 games, these guys are our future and he will learn from he’s bad ones. Why would you drop him when we are playing Adelaide next week and a great chance to win, these young guys need to experience that as wins are what fast tracks them into becoming better players.

Good game to watch, very swingy each way. Bit of luck that Higgins is a hack merchant and has tunnel vision two terrible attributes to have but together? No thanks burnt his teammates about 5 times lol.

Henry kicked a classy asf goal, Ginnavan is a player.
Don’t like Crisp predominantly in the middle. We’ve been historically an average decision making mid setup moreso execution errors. We are prone to a lot of shanks from senior players in between the 50’s so I’d rather see him start behind the ball then in the guts later on.

Love the small ball forward setup very dangerous with quick ball movement... if only we had a really tall forward who could mark. Cox is a mixed bag if we can upgrade that area which is the hardest to do we have a good nucleus moving forward.

Backline is the backline. Howe fit might be a chance for AA though the comp is very stiff.

Also great debut for Lipinski!

Last night was the first game in a 'new' style of footy.

It showed an excellent buy in by the players.

We still have some structural weaknesses. The ones we've had for years. A strong forward.

Yet the game plan negated that weakness to some extent.

Overall, a great start!!!!

I’m just rewatching the game and loving the forward handballs out of a stoppage. De Goey, Elliot, Crisp and Lippa exploding from the contest is really pleasurable to watch.
So true - when the opposition backmen regularly see their opposition mids exploding goalwards from the pivot they start getting that deer in the headlights feeling ;)

Just wait til they sign him to 4 x 600k and within 12 -18 months he stuffs up again

Sponsors, PR and common sense will determine his then exit… and the pies will be in a beams like contact impasse situation afterwards
No they won’t because dismissal for that type of behaviour will be grounds for voiding his contract. Whether it is written in his new contract (which I suspect is already standard in all contracts) and/or fully supported by the AFL

Just caught up on the game day thread and there were comments on DeGoey being booed. From my perspective at the game, it wasn’t booing - Pies supporters were calling Goo when he did good things. Reminiscent of Tooooves, back in the day.
So the booing was in fact baby talk babbling from the throats of supporters. What a relief!

Hope you’re joking about Bianco. He’s young but not up to it right now. He’s very slow and missed an easy shot on goal. 7 disposals and 2 turnovers.
If the faces of the players were of us as much importance as their footy skills and performance, Bianco would be gifted games weekly. Unfortunately, winning is the aim of the game, and Bianco doesn't contribute much to achieving that goal. There is appeal too in the body attached to his head, but unfortunately a sloth could outrun him and good skills don't account for much if you don't get the ball. He should spend the rest of the year keeping Tyler Brown company in the VFL.

The 3 kids, McCreery, Ginnivan, Henry showed a lot of composure to slot those important goals. Still would love to see McCreery get more of the ball, because with his speed and kicking, he can be very damaging. Almost needs to be a little more selfish as well.

Everyone will talk up McRae’s tugger connection, but there was a bit of 2010 Collingwood about our game plan last night. That includes the manic forward pressure and unlike Goldsack and Blair who were a big part of our 2010 season the ‘21 crop has better goal sense.

The return to a stricter holding the ball interpretation will help and I liked the change for the most part.

Brown only played just over 50% game time. Thought he was good given the limited opportunity.
Honestly, if we’re going to use a young mid in the 22 and give them only 50% game time I’d prefer we use an infinitely better option in Macrae, or even give Reef a run.

It's not rocket science Bucks. No need to suffocate your players by over calculations.
I thought McRae’s words were telling in his presser. He said that at the end of the 3rd quarter during the break they concentrated on what they did right early in the 3rd rather than what they were doing wrong in the later stages. That’s the right way to motivate your players, and something I don’t think happened during the Buckley era. Way too much emphasis on what the players were doing wrong, and making them scared of ****ing up in the process.

This is my recollection as well. Nobody seated near me booed. I was surprised to read that.

I mentioned at 3 qtr time that last year we would have tried to lock the game down in the last with the aim of holding on. This year they came out and backed themselves to beat the opposition. Awesome.

Watching the team take the game on with such a young spread of goal-kickers made me happy.

Almost every player had nice moments yesterday. Howe, Lipa, JDG, the young trio in the forward line etc.. I must mention IQ; just epic in the last. He's even better this year.

People are unfairly tough on Grundy. He was enormous in the last and dominated the tap-outs all game. His ruckwork last night was very good. Just forget how much he's on and watch the guy try his heart out FFS.

N. Daicos

If you take out their purple patch which came from our mistakes, we win by 50 points.

Off the top of my head:
  • Moore drops a mark on the goal line
  • Beau gives away a down the field kick
  • Grundy infringes on the ruck contest
  • Moore tries to switch the ball (twice)
  • Madgen butter fingers in the goal square

Watched it back ( was in transit ) and most of those comeback goals if not all for the Saints was due to our mistakes and some dodgy umpiring!

Most of the almost moments were reserved for Madgen from my point of view.

Almost does something great like take an intercept mark or clear the ball, only to just stuff it up at the last possible moment. Which usually led to a goal. Hopefully he was only playing because we are missing Roughead/Dean & Maynard.

Big wraps on the game of Quaynor though. He is such a great blend of lockdown, intercept and attack as a small defender.

Lippa’s slick ball use also makes up for his lack of pace. He is a really nice piece to build around, even if once the rebuild is complete he is only the 3rd or 4th best mid in the rotation.
