Having watched the replay of the U18 games this week I really like the look of Mattaes Phillipou.
full

Essentially underage compared to the other players but is a massive midfielder at 192cm and was clean in the wet, even post-injury. Really looks like a one-touch player.
Imagine a midfield from next year including Phillipou at 192cm and Culley at 193cm. Would be massive turnaround from our otherwise undersized midfield.

Still think Hewitt was good for WA, albeit quieter than his game a fortnight ago. He hits the clearance at pace and seems to be very quick. Don't think his disposal is as bad as some suggest. Pick 1/2 might still be a bit early from him. Wasn't impressed with Jhye Clark who missed a lot of targets by foot on the weekend.
Have not seen anything of Wardlaw so cannot make any comment on him. Hopefully he gets some exposed form in the second half of the year.
Sheezel looks good but I don't know if he's the right selection for us if we want to address pure midfield issues, however, could transition to an elite midfielder, given the right circumstances.

Is this where I list out all guys bigger than McInnes that weren’t skilled enough to get on an AFL list, let alone stay on it for eight years?
Yes please
Big frase may have been the insider when i said a while back that some of the players didnt want willie back after his indiscretions

We should talk to ~sigh~ Geelong about trading for Shannon Neale, i know he just re-signed but WA ruck stuck behind a huge list of De koning stanley ratagolea etc. Or talk to brissy about Kalin Lane

If we get the first pick, do you think we will go for Ashcroft?

Yes. It's why winning the spoon is important. We win the spoon and Ashcroft's equation is us or Brisbane. Then we deliver the mother of all pitches. Hookers and coke. Ok, maybe just flags and biggest club in the country type stuff.

Lane is about 12 months away from being AFL ready, but he’s really improved a lot this year.

We need to draft mids who can play in wet conditions. It isn't acceptable that as soon as it gets wet we lose. No ifs buts or maybe's......we are 2nd rate.

It might not be our 1st pick but a mid who isnt afraid of getting down and dirty and knows how to play when conditions are not perfect.

I think the AFL has no interest in giving away start of the draft picks unless the team is in dire dire need. Much more likely to see end of first rounders with a stipulation attached that must be traded for senior players.

Getting in more kids after a few years of being dire, doesn't help the team in the short term, adding some senior players to balance out the age profile (as flagged by Adams) does.

Mid or late 1st rounder to be traded for a senior player is my call.

Also wont be surprised to see them trade pick 1 down to 4 or 5 and then take Busslinger.

I was replying to the other post suggesting building draft currency. To be honest there’s not much there to build that will grow enough in the short/medium term to build any trade currency.

I understand that we have used the whole list this year. Some players don’t show their true skill in a few games and gain more from the continuity before they start to blossom. How does that happen if we have all these 30+ guys taking those minutes?

If our older guys were performing like they are for Geelong or we were on the cusp of the 8 then I understand dragging them for another season, but they getting the same results as a bunch of 18 year olds anyway. So why not use these down years to develop other players or take our chances in the draft?

Other than some help to develop the young guys (which we have plenty on the list to do so without them) what is the long term gain here?

You trying to win games or flags?

I'm interested in winning games and flags. You don't win flags with a losing culture.

So how many of the old crew would you move on this year?

And who remains to 'lead the kids?

You cut too hard you end up like North.

Regarding all the Hawks list strategy supporters. Remember they kicked out the old crew sure but then they traded in O'Mera, Wingard and Mitchelle as mature players to support the rebuild. Eagles don't have the luxury of being in Melbourne with 10 other teams and a very active trade market. We don't have as much access to quality mature players and not many here are interested in trading anyway. Kids , kids, kids. So it is easy to just say "lets follow what the Hawks did." Not so easy to do it not based in Melbourne.

Lloyd Meek (24 - 203cm - 110kg) is contracted through to 2023
If Freo get Jackson (Hoping we convince him to join us and walk him to the daft), he would sit behind Darcy and Jackson like he does currently with Lobb and Darcy currently.
  • What would we offer him? 3 years at $500K a season? Guaranteed Games?
  • What would Freo want, given his currently contracted?

Sam Hayes (23 - 205cm - 102kg) is contracted through to 2023 - Behind West Coast Eagles premiership ruckman Scott Lycett when his fit. Port Adelaide want to play one ruckman and have Dixon/Finlayson and others rotate through, rather then play two? May not be looking to move?

If we were to get one one of these guys, we get to put more development into Bailey and Callum, knowing they are back-ups and likely to be used with Nic expected not to play all 22 games.
Glass half full, when Nic retires we could have a ruck combination of Meek/Hayes and Tim English in 2025.......

Should we trade Rioli ? It's been mentioned around the places. Preferably Richmond where he has family ties or to Bomberland to replace Tippa. We could get a early 20s pick for him and maybe an upgrade on a later pick. For us I don't know if he will be playing afl for more than 3-4 years anyway.

Big call yes but we really need as many picks under 30 as we can get.

Would loath seeing Willie running around in Richmond colours or Essendon. The Suns I could live with.

I wouldn't be trading Willie for any 2nd round picks. I'd be adding pick 38 or Ports 2nd and only trade for a 1st rounder. A later 1st with pick 38. An earlier 1st with Ports 26.

The thing with Willie that people need to consider is how much longer will he play at the top level? Look at the history of players from the Tiwi Islands. They rarely stay away from home for 10 + years, they retire early. Cyril, Tippa, Dean. Sadly, Willie just lost his father and family ties are so much stronger with indigenous peoples, they do not value a long AFL career away from home and $$$$ as much as others do.

So for the right deal it would be ok in the overall scheme of things as unfortunately history suggests Willie won't be playing when we next contend.

It may also clear some air in the playing group as apparently not all were happy with how many chances Willie has been given.

Don't be surprised if he comes back after his dads funeral and 'sorry time' and says I'm done, family is more important.

I reckon we put the feelers out for Llane Spaanderman. He'll definitely have matured into his ruck body by now and could be a good moneyball acquisition for us.

We'd have to come up with a good draft pick to get him from the Hakea team

Thanks for the great work

Phillipou would be the definition of a high risk, high reward pick

Have seen him play live, rate him highly (particularly given he is so young)

If we assume that Ashcroft nominates for father son, and Sheezle is a flight risk, that leaves us choosing from Wardlaw, Hewitt and Phillipou

Of those 3, I think Phillipou has the highest ceiling. By far

The only way I’d be ok to see Rioli leave is if we ended up with Liam Baker out of the deal. And that’s only if he wanted out, I wouldn’t be nudging him out the door.

I thought Hayes was really good when he played this year, and he was pretty dominant as a junior. Would kick bags in u18s as a forward so can play ruck and forward well.

But there is a knock on him, which I believe is his tank or maybe attitude. He went pick 47 in his draft year, and was regarded first round selection.

He does feel very gettable at the moment, as Port aren't playing him. At 205cm and ability to play forward, he has appeal - just don't know what that knock on him is. As it's obviously come up again, as he's been dropped from Port side for make shift ruckmen.

Hamish Free might be an option if we can’t attract an AFL listed ruck. Putting up very similar numbers to Meek this year for South Freo.

I’d move on this year:
JK, Shuey (trade Gaff)

Next year:
Hurn, Redden,

Following year:
N/N, Cripps

Players left to lead kids:
Kelly, Yeo, Darling, Gov, Barrass, Sheed
