I actually think Freo want to hang on to him. He has always said he wants to play as a forward and not a ruck. If they get Jackson then Lobb could play predominantly as a forward.
Can personally confirm the bolded - he told me as such when I met him once - it was why he chose Freo over West Coast - we wanted him as a genuine second ruck

Yes I agree, if he wanted to stay, and he continued to produce seasons like this one. But this is the second year in a row he's asked to leave, after coming in on big coin and doing very little.

He's finally got some value that they could use to land Jackson, so I reckon they sell high.

This also allows them to save face. "Lobb is required, but the Dogs made us an offer that was too good to refuse, Purple army, so this is just another feather in our cap with our acquisition of Luke Jackson. Look at our shiny new toy!"

Risky business hanging on to somebody who wants to go. Especially when they have just come off a season when they have played at the top of their range in terms of their personal performances. If they are dead set on going then your negotiating position won't get any better over time as the get older, their contract comes closer to expiry and possibly their form dips. And their form is likely to dip if they crack the shits that you wouldn't trade them. I think this is just a negotiating position from Freo. They want other clubs to come at them with attractive offers rather than have to waste time and energy going out to try and sell him. They might also be buying time to make sure the Jackson deal will go through before they commit to letting go of another tall.

Suggestions to ask Gaff to move on seem fanciful at best, poor culture building at worst.

1. Who cares about the salary dump aspect. Get over his salary, club doesn't seem to have an issue managing it as part of the TPP.
2. Due to Gaffs age, recent form & evidently a play style that doesn't fit in with the current game, not sure we could get anything for him outside of a token draft pick to facilitate the move.
3. A player who has given everything for the club being asked to leave will come back and bite the club on the bum next time we ask someone to show loyalty.

Gaff took a lesser contract than what Norf were offering to stay at the Eagles at a time when his father was ill. There was every reason for him to leave. A man who never flinches when it's his turn to go. A man who's fitness and professionalism never waned when those around him have been cruising and complaining for 3 seasons.

What is the benefit of asking him to leave? A salary dump we don't need to do and a draft pick we won't use. Hmm.

I guess it comes down to Lobb's reason for wanting to leave. For that I have no idea.

Plus Freo have form on this.

They have previously said players are never going to be traded - only to end up trading them during the window.

So yeah, it is tactical. Not sure it is a useful tactic, but it's what they have chosen.

Salary cap space doesn't matter ... until you are trying to find the money to convince a player at another club to come to you in a couple of years time. Sorry, but salary cap space does matter. Otherwise the AFL wouldn't bother having one.

Nobody is suggesting that we will get anything of value on the trade market for Gaff. Thats not news. I think there is already unanimity on that.

Nobody is saying force him out Treloar style. What is being said is that if his form is not AFL standard then he should be dropped to the WAFL. And if it is the club's view that he is unlikely to be in the best 22 going forward and won't be getting a contract extension then it is not only OK for them to tell him that but they have an obligation to be honest with him and tell him that. And if he can find a club where he is more likely to get a game elsewhere then we will facilitate a trade. There is nothing wrong or disloyal about being honest with a player about where they stand in the scheme of things and what the club's priorities and position will be going forward.

Lobb has wanted to go to Melbourne for a few years.
Tucker and Meek not getting games.
Acres lowballed so leaving for more money.
Logue wants to play in defence and was lowballed initially as well.
Lobb has wanted to get out of freo full stop. Was gws now bulldogs

I think they are just buying time to make sure Jackson deal goes through. Otherwise they trade Lobb, or commit to trading him, and a week later Jackson deal falls through and they end up with neither.

More likely they are pushing to force the Dogs to pony up a deal they wont refuse so they can meet the Jackson trade price.

I don't agree with that. If we could get rid of him for nothing in return and only paying 300k of his salary that would be an absolute bargain. He should have spent most of the year in the WAFL given how badly he is going. I think we should have been a lot more brutal and hard nosed with him and tried a lot harder to convince him to go.

And that's the risk you take with contracts.

Just want to point out how much better we do with player retention than Freo - there must be reasons for that.

The way they carry on about Colin Young I honestly reckon they believe he forces them out himself. It’s hilarious.

Your playing this out like he’s being ejected by a bouncer out of a pub.

Firstly no one even knows Gaffs,Gaffs Manager or the clubs position on on any of these issues. It’s all hypothetical.

If the Club and Gaffs manager have spoken in private about the possibility of him moving, it would be only done if it was of benefit to both player and club. No way would the club force him out and just as importantly there is no way you can say that Gaff or any other senior player wouldn’t look at offers if it was of benefit to them.
The conversation would end with the players manager saying his client is open to exploring options or no he has no interest and is happy to see out his contract.
Both clubs and player managers are mature and professional enough to have these conversations they are going on all the time.

Secondly if the club can improve its draft hand and improve its position with its salary cap by moving out players that are not part of our future plan then they should explore these opportunities. If it’s of benefit to both player and club it’s a good thing.
If the club was to be stupid and force players (strong arm them out the door) then this would be a terrible outcome but I haven’t seen anyone in any of these threads suggesting this or anything in the media to support this.

It would be an absolute joke of a decision to award them pick 2 so it'll likely happen.

We suck next year we should ask for the same.

Bloke in the know on the North board hinting that they'll be getting pick 2 as a PP. Does that change our chances of downgrading our first rounder?

Won’t happen. They didn’t even ask for that, did they? Thought they asked for more staggered assistance.
