Some really mediocre MSD suggestions floating around with Gilbey, Narkle & Teal. We've got these guys on our list and if we're not picking up someone who is filling a niche in terms of position and quality you might as well have a swing at a more speculative player like a traditional rookie.

We need to be adding offensive potency and none of the above guys do that.
Surely Gilbey fits that bill, highly rated junior, could have been a second round pick but didn't get picked because he broke his leg and not because he wasn't good enough, appears to have come back well, provides dash off half back, perfect age for a rebuilding club. Vastly different proposal to Narkle.

So if I said to you can have Nick Dacios who was the real number one in 2021 but due to father son slide or

GWS option Finn Callaghan, Josh Ward and Wardlaw (GWS future 1st)

Dees option Mac Andrew, Tom Browne, Toby Conway and Matt Jefferson (Dees future 1st)

Suns option Josh Rachelle, Mitchell Knevitt and Bailey Humphrey (suns future 1st )

Reid currently stands out as the overall number one even more so than what Dacios did in his draft year.
🙋‍♂️
GWS
Daicos
Suns
Dees

Not even close, Daicos was clearly the best performed talent league player that year (& probably ever). You don't need a match winner like Reid if you are already 5 goals up.

Top AFL 2023 draftees Harley Reid, Ashton Moir believed to be open to move to struggling West Coast Eagles

Two of the top draft prospects in the nation are keen to play for West Coast next season.
As the Eagles stare down the barrel of a second wooden spoon in club history and a No.1 pick for just the third time ever, it is understood Dustin Martin-like Harley Reid and top South Australian prospect Ashton Moir would both be happy to relocate to WA.
It’s welcome news for the struggling Eagles as the club looks to navigate a massive rebuild.
Reid, a big-bodied midfielder from the Bendigo Pioneers, is seen as a lock for this year’s No.1 pick, described as a mix of three-time Norm Smith medallist Martin and Hawthorn great Luke Hodge.

Meanwhile, South Australian forward Moir is considered his closest competition and the Glenelg product has strong ties to WA, with his mother, 2000 Australian Olympic Taekwondo representative Cynthia born in Perth.
In fact, Moir is an Eagles fan and is well known to their scouts, having kicked four goals as a bottom-ager for South Australia’s under-18s against WA in Joondalup last year.
The Eagles have already drafted four players from that game in South Australian ruckman Harry Barnett as well as West Aussies Reuben Ginbey, Elijah Hewett and Tyrell Dewar.
West Coast are currently in the frame for pick No.1 as they sit on the bottom of the ladder. They face clashes with Richmond (16th), Gold Coast (13th) and Hawthorn (17th) in coming weeks which could entrench their position.
It comes in the midst of a catastrophic injury crisis that is derailing their season rapidly.

On VFL debut for the Blues last weekend, Reid collected 13 disposals and two clearances against the Western Bulldogs, instantly getting in the action with the first clearance of the game.
The Victorian Country star is already averaging 22 disposals and kicked five goals from three games for the Pioneers in the 2023 Coates Talent League and is set to be a star attraction at the under-18 championships later this year.
Moir has been compared to Sydney star Isaac Heeney.

The 18-year-old has started the season well with six goals in two games for Glenelg in the SANFL under-18 competition before stepping up into the reserves, where he has added another five goals.

Moir is expected to develop into a big-bodied midfielder, and alongside young Eagles Ginbey and Hewett, could be crucial to the Eagles’ next period of success.
West Coast’s only wooden spoon came in 2010, but they didn’t get the top pick because of the compensation, being relegated to No.4 where they grabbed wingman Andrew Gaff.
The Eagles have had the top pick in the draft twice, taking two-time premiership star Drew Banfield in 1992 and 129-game All-Australian ruckman Michael Gardiner in 1996.

I know that trading down has quite a bit of risk attached to it. However, you would have to do this exercise for every year to get a proper breakdown. Matt Rowell or Luke Jackson, Hayden Young and Logan McDonald. Sam Walsh or Izak Rankine, Bailey Smith and Luke Jackson etc etc.

Without knowing who we'd end up taking if we did trade down, I would definitely take the GWS offer. The others I wouldn't take but it wouldn't surprise me if the club did. For some reason I get the feeling that North wouldn't throw everything at trading up. But if I'm wrong they could do 4, 14 and a future 1st for 1.

Sam Gilbey fits the bill. Some had him in their top 30 likely picks in last year's draft before he broke his leg. 18 years old playing seconds at Claremont in his comeback and has been in their best 2 players in 2 of the 3 results I've looked at. Could be our Shepherd replacement and we get him for free.
Gilbey is being nursed back into the Claremont line up and has played 3 reserves games on the HBF. His leg break was horrendous hence the slow build. In terms of form, he is starting to get into the games and is gaining close on 20 disposals a game. His kicking still looks pretty damn good.

So do we pull the trigger? As a second pick, I am good to go with him. We certainly have spots available given the LTI list. It would be an 18 month rookie contract and he will not be ready for AFL at all this year so it is a play for next year, and even then he will do well to deserve a spot in the Beagles.

It would require we go harder with the list cull end of this year. I can provide a list of at least 8 that I would happily make way for a genuine talent who was on track for an AFL list in and around the late second to third round until his injury.

The HUN had a decent article this morning

A pay wall but here is the summary.

Basically the HUN have got access to Champion data more detailed information and it measures the expected likelihood of the a sucessful kick

Champion Data based its analysis for each club on a 40-kick minimum this season.

The AFL stat gurus explained the kick rating as the difference between a player’s expected hit rate and their actual hit rate.

“A negative kick rating indicates a player is not executing the kicks as well as the competition average, and a positive kick rating shows a player is hitting the target more often than the competition average,” Mobilio explained.

“We take into account the amount of pressure the player is under and what type of kick they are trying to pull off ,and can compare that to the competition average across the past 10 years to work out what the expected hit rate is for each kick.”

They only give the best and worst and SPS is our best and Gaff our worst

SPS comes out at number 49 and the Cats shave 8 players in the top 50

Of course. Based on Lore's current draft pick order I could see a trade down for 1(not including players) being like the following:

1 and 33 for 3, 7 and a Future 1st with GWS
1 for 5, 17, 24 and a Future 1st with Melbourne
I could even see Gold Coast coming out of nowhere and doing 6, 25 and a Future 1st if Jed Walter does so well this year that he gets locked in as a top 5 pick.
Would only be happy with the GWS picks

We'll finish above North and Hawthorn imo. agree some winnable games in the second half. I hate to say it but I hope we finish last. But I just cant see it.

We need pick 1 , just gotta hope we win games playing some good footy , NM and Hawks win more ....
Wooden Spoons not we want .

Could beat Richmond tomorrow they have lost the plot ..

I'm torn !!

I would like to keep the Pick 1 and try to swap a few picks to get back into the early draft mix .. Geelong and Carlton with Picks 12 & 13 may be the best options ..

Geelong #12 then snooze until #88
Carlton #13 have a nap then #66

Would like to keep something for Coen ..

I just don't get it with DGB. Has some mongrel but it undersized by true modern standards. I think he's a great 2nd defender (lock down) at best.

Sam Taylor on the other hand, may only be 1cm taller but he's always looked stronger and reading of the play is FAR better. Two way defender too.

DGB is overrated for mine. I'd rather spend the currency on someone else.

That is indeed a very tough call ....... don't think it matters too much to be honest.

I would like to think that we are looking at Kobe Ryan also, as I see him as a very good option that can play either midfield ( more outside than in ) plus he could also be a crafty opportunistic HHF.

From the looks of his 2023 SANFL form thus far, it appears that he has lifted his tackle and clearance rates, whilst averaging 21.5 disposals per game.

I rated him on talent as a late first early second round pick last draft, but I had some serious questions on both his ego and his maturity.
So I would expect that missing out on the draft completely last year, may have flattened the ego problem somewhat.
As far as assessing the maturity issue...... thats where we just have to trust those at the Club who are tasked with doing so.

Thanks mate....So it seems as there are some good options this year for MSD without resorting to mature agers?
Is it possible to have a deep MSD?

You're comparing a second year player to a bloke in his 6th season..
