Would certainly be worth giving Van Es a taste of senior footy at some stage this year. He has the athleticism and size to be our big brute FB.I've said for ages that Doogs isn't a FB. All his best work was at CHB where he could go 3rd man up and then run off and launch 60m cannonballs inside 50 knowing that he had Brown/Carlisle/Frawley/Joyce behind him.
Now that Battle has taken that interceptor role Doogs has been left a little out of place.
McKay seems... fine.
I would have loved Jack Payne but with Adams and Gardner down at the Lions I think he's gonna cement himself at FB and stay there long term.
Hoping JVE can be that guy sooner rather than later. A Zac Dawson 'outta nowhere' type promotion next year would be fine with me.
Maybe we could be the swans from last year and have a bunch of 18-22 year olds and then 1-2 old blokes like Steele/crouchI hope we aren’t waiting that long until we are contending again
King is almost 23, he’s coming into his best years. Mids don’t take near as long as key forwards so there shouldn’t be any reason why Owens, Pou and Windy can’t be having big impacts at 22 years old.
How you gonna get Anderson when he's contracted til 2027? Would love him, but not happening. How long have we needed high end quality mids. Here’s food for thought, I’ve always been against paying overs for established players and hitting the draft. Until recently that hasn‘t worked that well, would we have been better of to have paid the two firsts price and got a gun mid.
Should our real target at the GC be Anderson ?.
Real talk. Is Steele going to be in our next flag team? We might have to wait until Windy, Owens, Pou and king are in their actual prime at 26 years old and a couple young stars below them.
Marshall might be because he’s less replaceable than Steele who might be pushed out by Owens windy Pou by the time he’s 30+.If steele isn't a part of our next flag then most of the current team isnt because they are all his age or older.
If steele is too old, then so are:
Wilkie
Sinclair
Marshall
Gresh
etc etc etc...
Ie- our entire team minus king, battle and the teenagers basically.

I think the coaches had a fair bit to do with that. Clark played midfield round one 2021 and played extremely well. Then for some odd reason we barely saw him play midfield after that. Injuries have obviously played a massive role in his development too.
I’m not sure looking at our squad is a great example though. We have been unable to develop well for a long time. I’d prefer to look at what other clubs have been able to do and hope we strive for that.
Most of the best mids in the comp were playing very good football in the midfield by 21/22.
Hopefully Lyon looks at the potential these kids have and starts introducing them into there a bit more. We saw it happen early but we seem to have gone away from that over the last few weeks and have gone back to backing the older brigade.
Yep. Play the kids AND win is the way to go. Don’t play the kids and lose like north thoughYea hopefully Ross backs them in. I’m sick of seeing us take the cautious approach to developing the kids. Throw them in the deep end and let them grow; that’s what every other team has done.

We might as well have traded, Harvey, Reiwoldt, Lenny, etc as they weren't part of our next flag either.
I hate this facile analogy.

You simply do not trade out heart & soul players like Membrey & Marshall. The only senior players that I would be willing to trade and move on from would be
Gresh: Hasn't played much over the last 3 years due to injury, would be one of the only players on the list that another team would be willing to pay a big contract to, and whilst his best is very good, if he could get close to a top 10-15 pick, then I would be happy moving him on
Membrey: If we are serious about getting B King then don't see how he fits, and would rather try Caminiti as the third tall tbh
Marshall: this one was 50/50 for me, however, if another team was willing to pay overs and then we could use those pics for Darcy then would consider
If you want something good you need to give up something good. You simply do not trade out heart & soul players like Membrey & Marshall.
Marshall or NVM lol. As you said he’s out of contract, if he requests a trade you’ll get a 2nd rounder maxIf you want something good you need to give up something good.
Miles Bergman is a Sandy boy who is flying at Port.
Out of contarct at year end, would Marshall or SA Wanageneem-Milera be a far trade.
Out of contract so you loose most of your bargaining power that way. Maybe a late firstIf you want something good you need to give up something good.

I agree. I dont think he is an improvement or worth the extra he would cost.
As maligned as Dougal is, we've been so strong as a backline this year that unless it is a Sam Taylor/Darcy Moore level of defender, I don't think paying big money for a full back (which is what reports are saying McKay would cost) is the best use of our current salary cap with the midfield and forward line needing more improvement overall.
Happens all the time? You simply do not trade out heart & soul players like Membrey & Marshall.
As if ........We can still go to the draft and take the required kids - elite midfielders with the early pick/s.
Offer Carlton a late 2nd round pick for TDK.
Chase McKay if that releases Dougal to play higher up the ground, McKay is stronger in one on one contests. Battle can play the Wilkie role and Wilkie take take the medium forwards. Parish would be a free hit also apart from $$$ which we should have plenty of. If Gresham leaves then we lose the compensation, but I think Parish is a much better midfielder.
If we dont have the cap then Hill takes a significant hair cut on his original contract and spread it over more years.
I am confident the current kids on our list that havent played AFL will all make decent players - Keeler, Van Es, Adams, Hotton, McLennan, Heath perhaps even Peris, but we desparately need dynamic midfielders. Hopefully RTB realises that after last week and plays Windhager for the remainder.

I don’t expect to, I’m just musing on what we need and how to get it. If we play finals this year as I expect then who will be there at our pick. Maybe we get lucky and the sort of mid we need is there but what do you do if we’re outside the gun mids and in the sweet spot for half back flankers. How you gonna get Anderson when he's contracted til 2027? Would love him, but not happening.
Draft is what we need to prioritise this year.
Bring in a McKay/Himmelberg to replace Dougs and give us a bit of extra coverage down back and look at finding a diamond in the rough type who fills a need like a Ben Keays for Adelaide or Will Brodie for Freo. Not a perennially injured type like Zak Jones/Dan Hannebery.
Don’t remember Port having to give up a player for JHFIf you want something good you need to give up something good.

I'd trade anybody if it makes us a better team.Who falls into the category of "heart and soul players"?
I honestly think that's not such a worry. Our list re-rebuild has been centered around King since he was drafted and our age demographic is right to maximize output during his prime years with some generational overlap.I hope we aren’t waiting that long until we are contending again

Isn't this his third and final year of his contract? If so, wonder if he will get another one.Or probably like Dunstan. I spoke to my brother who follows the Blues and he said he's looking better this season. He's shitty that he's not getting a game over a few who have dropped off this year. Not sure if he's just wanting to rage-whinge though. It's a family trait.
