Autopsy Round 11, 2023: St.Kilda v Hawthorn

Extraordinary game by Sicily.

42 disposals (@90% DE)
21 intercept possessions 😳
17 contested possessions
16 marks
11 score involvements
5 contested marks
628m-gained
163 AFL fantasy points

One of the all-time great defensive games you’d think.

40 of them were idiotic passes to him. Looked like we should be investigated for throwing the match. ****ing disgusting effort. Wouldn't keep many of these guys for the next build. King, Owens and Phillipou. The rest are mostly shit or overrated.

If it can't be moderated, the game day thread be canned.

Couldn't watch the game so I followed it for a short while on that thread - embarrassing!!!.

A whole pile of offensive pathetic comments that should see lots of posters banned if the posting rules were enforced.
Again… we just lost to a team in a three horse race for the spoon. What did you expect?

I come in peace.
Stkildas issue isn't talent. It's the Ross Lyon game plan. It does not stack up against fast teams. It will get you an honourable loss. Hawks are a fast team that had a disorganised forward line for 10 weeks.

Peace off.

Can't really argue with anything you said though.

The Hawks were better than us today, enjoy the win.

Been some embarrassingly world-class dummy spits here today.

Off to talkback with you… or the Carlton membership hotline.

You’ll all be back next week. You can’t help yourselves. Nor can I. We’re hopeless.
We're the hardest melting board bar none. It's a special place to be sometimes

Steele is more than likely playing hurt - no excuse but he doesn’t look right out there
I more look at what is his talent trait?

Judd had speed, Gaz had evasiveness.

Even now, Trac is explosive and big, Bont has Pendles traits and is a monster. What’s Steele got to set him apart. I think he had a great season with Paddy feeding him and it might be that this is more his standard than what we saw. I hope I’m wrong but I’m just not sure he’s what we all hoped he was.

Really? Higgins is why we lost? Holy hell, if you can't see the gaping holes in this list and our game all day, well I just don't know what to say.

Stats and just your eye will tell you the smalls are performing and above their weight when you look at the collective output this year.

They've done well. Sure had some wtf moments but they've done very well given the injuries to the talls.

Midfield consists of crouch and that's it. There's literally nothing else.

No one tackles more than steele

Think the bye is coming at the best possible time for literally every person even remotely involved or interested in this football club.

Sydney in Sydney is a traditionally difficult game for us. Hope we can freshen up and find some of that early spark we had in the first few weeks.

Very well beaten today, not enough of the pill and the Hawks wasting chances.

I’d just like to see Windy back in the side mainly.

Steele was absolutely pathetic today. 14 touches from a captain is unforgivable.

Needs to be dropped, playing like an absolute pea heart.
if he ain't right cause of his shoulder then he needs to rest. If it's form he needs to be in the VFL.

Windy and bytel need to be rewarded

Fair but I can’t recall too many elite midfielders getting ahead by being tackling machines. It also speak to what I said earlier, get him back to the run with role. If he goes head to head with the oppos best and wins it helps enormously, I’m not convinced he’s gonna be the number 1 elite mid we want him to be.

For all the Einstein's blaming Higgins, his hand is ****ed, stepped on last week, dislocated finger this week.

Look at the mids first and foremost, candidates the spread. Totally and completely smashed in the mids and on the spread.

We will be lucky to make finals. Until we get quality mids( and not Half Back Flankers) we will remain a mid field team.

The honeymoon is over Ross.

We have 2 inside mids that aren't great inside contested ball winners and Ross is a soft outside player who isn't overly good at anything. Marshall is like a good midfielder but very average ruck and can't feed the ordinary mids that we have. If they can't run and spread or win first use they are a waste of time.

At least we know now that this list isn't up to it and should tank away the rest of the season. We are embarrassing. Need a refresh.

Just watched Ross’s press conference. Pretty honest. We should have lost by more. What he says behind closed doors to the team and individuals is perhaps another thing. But he was pretty calm.

Still seems to be working through what they all can and cannot do. Some interesting things if you read between the lines about where some of the players are at. Windy working on stuff. Billings a fair way off. Members got to work into it more. No quick fixes or panic buttons.

I think the year of ‘exploration’ is a real thing. You can see he is under no pressure. I think they will work their way through it. There are changes ahead on the list front. Think he just wants to work it through and give the players ownership. Some will deserve it, some won’t.

Hard to summarise his conferences as they are a stream of consciousness. But he lets you know quietly that he is onto stuff. I feel slightly better after watching it.

He's noy there to tackle. He can smother though.

Watching that match I was thinking he's the St Kilda footy club's spirit animal. Soft, sometimes looks flash but mostly chooses when he wants to put in. Looks happy cruising around with limited skin in the game and waiting for others. Every few touches look elite then he does something mind bogglingly stupid or poorly skilled.

In the words of Jamie Taart "It's just poopeh"

Thoughts -

Nasty was ok. Wood tried. Crouch was serviceable. Stocker was ok. Not much else.

Play Owens and Windhager next game (and for the remainder of the season), predominantly as midfielders. Persist with Caminiti as the forward/ruck.

Marshall is a good footballer but not a centre bounce ruckman. We have a shite midfield whose job is made even harder by a ruckman who doesn't know his craft. Maybe it's time for TC with Marshall to play a high half forward type role

RTB press conference summary:

  • We got what we deserved today, thought the Hawks should have won by 4 or 5 goals.
  • We controlled Sicily in the third but he got off the chain in the last.
  • Our midfield just chugged along really, we couldn't get near them, their midfield dominated all day.
  • I can only coach action and the actions out there today weren't what we've tried to coach all year.
  • If the players weren't in the right space mentally then they've got to own it individually but ultimately it sits with me.
  • Go away, freshen up, come back and work as a complementary team.
  • The Hawks did what we knew they'd do and credit to them, it worked.

  • Clark probably a medial, similar to Steele.
  • Steele's not sore, his knee's fine.
  • Membrey still building back to his best.
  • Sorely missed Mitch Owens today, number one priority is his welfare.

  • If Higgins took that mark it would have been a part of pinching it, think we got our right whack.

  • Thought we were pretty good against Port and Collingwood, our only bad game has been against Adelaide, but tonight didn't look good.

  • Not sure where everyone rates the list but just trying to build a high trust environment, no idea if 7-4 is about right for this list.

  • We'll have to fight to the end against Sydney, they look desperate.

  • Billings barely did any pre-season, only had 2-3 full games so far. He's a centre-forward player not a midfielder.

  • Windhager had a full pre-season, working really closely with him, he got some feedback from the Port game.
  • Jimmy Bartel played a year in the twos because Bomber Thompson had to teach him stuff.
  • We're trying to teach him some stuff about his patterns, not trying to catch the ball, offensively and defensively.
  • Working one-on-one with Goddard, Hayes, Enright, RTB.
