Yeah, let's spend our cap on another NON MIDFIELDER Jesus wept.

cap isn't an issue, as long as he's free in terms of draft collateral it's ok. If Dons match and we trade, then we're further stuffed. That said, we should never have given up 5 for Rankine without seconds coming back. And yet we traded hard for Dawson, so there's inconsistencies (internal politics) there.

I reckon Redman good because decent mid, much like Dawson.

Last week was one of the first tines I have seen him play and he had some good mid traits.

Worked well in traffic
Nice spot up I50s.
And that first goal.

It's no coincidence our form has gone backwards the more we have relied on senior players in the midfield

feb 2023. It's been a deliberate strategy of this club for over a decade. I've got more.
i think he's a fair way off TBH. Midfield remains a massive weakness, especially with Sloane being in there. And Tex will be a force scattered throughout only about half a season and our key defenders are a little suspect. As are locks like Smith and Milera back there. Reckon it all looks ok on paper, but when we revert to experience and continuity, we'll come undone.

Yep and also the inability of Rachele to get it done in there as season progresses , the kid probably has had enough for year looks super heavy on his legs in last month

Pedlar a year away and we need Berry and Schoenberg getting games

Just need to pick Schoenberg in midfield and play him rest of year IMO
That's the strange thing with selection, Shoey came on as sub last week and really offered some speed through the midfield and was able to find the ball.
Next week he finds himself back in the 2's, it just sends the wrong message to whole squad

Another obvious thing.

Management of young/old players and the sub role. They’ve all hit the wall at the same time. Why not a bit of proactive management as the season wears on so we don’t get to July and he faced with the choice of resting 8x best 22 players or having them all going at 70%?

McHenry has been sub basically permanently and of his 3 full games has been very good in one, serviceable in another, and poor in one. I still don’t really know whether we should be persisting with him.

Rolling the likes of Soligo, Rachele, Max, Pedlar, Sloane through the sub role from about May onwards would have had the 3x benefit of (1) having a player who could impact as sub, (2) not having all those guys hit the wall at the same time, (3) getting a better look at others on our list.

Let me introduce you to a little thing called 'continuity'. It matters more than talent, uninjuredness, form, selection integrity and everything else. You simply don't go messing around with continuity credits. Plus I think there's a trophy at the end of the year for least used players. Pyke won at least 2 of them, they're highly sought after. Plus we only ever recruit players that thrive on this 'continuity' and huge workload. They're thriving i tells ya.

That’s five extra wins right there
Yeah/nah (although I agree we could've won more).
The GWS losses weren't close.
The Pies' losses were chokes like the Richmond loss.
Also, it goes both ways. We stole that Hawthorn win.
Thats fine but the fact is most of those losses came at the expense of development. We were never a chance for a premiership which means the club should have still been looking to pump games into as many players as possible. The fact we looked at the same mediocre 5 players regardless of performance speaks volumes.
This.
But I can see Nicks is in a bind ie he's got to scrounge wins together (to keep his job) and make it look like he's developing youth.
The latter would mean more losses ==> Nicks getting sacked.
To the Coaches, future wins and eventual strength don't count.
So, Nicks will be sacked anyway and the Crows' development will be 12-18 months behind, maybe more.

Just feel like it will take all our trade and salary cap to bring in the midfielder we need. Redman for more than 600 x 5 will be needed, and I don't want to spend that.

Nicks can't see this. He thinks Sloane and Keays are his winning cards in the middle.

They ain't.

A refreshed Rachele and Pedlar are.

no, no, that's called 'selection integrity'. If Schoey plays ahead of Sloane or Keays in the middle then we might as well hand back the license becsuse we'll become Melbourne or Carlton instantly.

Agree … horrible management of our best performed sanfl player this year

On that basis given that he brings something different he needs opportunities and backing in

I can't explain why exactly, but I just don't see Rachele as a mid.
Something about his hot-headed, sooky attitude I think. Glory-hog. I know he's only 20 but mids must put team first.
I'd like to see Jones given more mid-time. Tbf, they might be building him thataway now.

Rachele clearly needs a rest and the suspension will finally give him one … I feel he’s kind of done for year , lasted a month or so longer than last year but clearly needs more pre seasons

Peds was frustrating last night but will be great

We need to use Schoenberg and Berry in these last 7 games given they’re in form and offer something

I agree re Jones looks ready to be exposed to midfied , he’s playing on instinct with lots of consistent competitiveness and speed / power

Felt like he was one trying to drag us across the line last night

Rach needs a mental reset more than anything I think. So many times last night he tried the tricky flamboyant option over simply getting the ball and using it.

The kid has some great tricks but needs to learn that the basics come first.

you only need look down the road to see what midfield investment portends as they are a lock for top 2 this year with a midfield built for the next decade.
Very good post overall, just about the above:
Port have the worst % of the Top-4 teams and aren't a 'lock' for Top-2.
They've started their traditional July/August decline by being belted yesterday :roflv1:.

I do agree, though, that they've developed their midfield waaaaaay better than Nicks has, ours.

Watching him live I see huge diff in his ability to run and sustain it lately compared to earlier in season

Same thing happened last year but happened earlier in year

Hopefully next year he can sustain his form closer to full season as we need his talent

It's no coincidence our form has gone backwards the more we have relied on senior players in the midfield
Also no coincidence they’ve had to rely on them as the kids have run out of puff. They needed to manage this carefully this year and they haven’t.
