As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Many words, zero actual linking us to players. Quiet trade period coming up.

Id be happy to see that ..but for the sake of specificity ... quiet is none, one etc... ? no big name players ... ?

I think the article is more space filler than insightful. The thing about hoping for Smith to slide... cant say I remember that being said before.

Geelong came out publicly to say they weren’t after Smith. Can’t see it.

Did you conveniently forget he was out several weeks with a hammy, and did take a week or 2 to regain touch, which he now has...?
Depending on how we go out this year, I could see several retire- Hawkins, Tuohy, Smith.
Developing Sav as much as we have, it seems bizarre now to let him go when he finally playing great consistent footy- he is better than SDK this year.
To me Smith is a certainty to retire and I would put 2E in that camp as well. If we lose this week we might start to hear some retirements trickle out.

Ceglar will also be gone surely.

Beyond that movements will be those wanting to go on elsewhere

Agreed.

Next year will be the bigger clear out as far as retirees.

So 3 or 4 experienced players leaving (assuming Sav could be one) and a maybe a couple of acquisitions for our last flag tilt.

2025 will be like 2015 x1000 with the send-offs and starting anew.

Its plausible.

Kolo is 29 next year and a UFA. Would it be a huge leap to see him being offered a lucrative deal by someone in need of an experience 193cm premiership backman.. especially if he is "rested" a few weeks in favour of Sav.

I think we have to adjust our backline to be a little more focused on speed and rebound rather than overhead superiority. That probably mean Bews and a younger version of him. Mullins or someone else.

Another factor is balance if we play Sav. Sav would be expected to be the tall marking defender, its what he does well... and just like against Port it would leave Kolo playing more on smalls. Kolo's best game have been when he takes intercept marks.

Kolodjashnij is the oldest having turned 28 yesterday
Ratugolea turned 25 late last month
Henry isn’t 25 until later this month
SDK will turn 23 about a month out from next season

I’m not sure how 4 goes into 3 - even if we have all 4 on our list next season, think we’ll have to be prepared that one may well leave in 12 months time. If as fans we’ve seen the juggling the coaches have been trying to do across the season, then there’s no doubt other teams have taken notice also - would other teams then try get in the ear of a youngster and put a irresistible offer to them

With Barrass signalling his intentions to stay out west for at least the next 12 months, will Sydney just sit back and see what happens or get a little proactive & in the ears of others? We know it was reported they were strongly interested in Tom DK, so if Ratugolea re-signs with us, could they potentially get in the ear of Sam - then see if they can reunite the brothers in the next couple of years?

  • SDK
  • Sav
  • Well ordered backline
Choose 2

I find this narrative a bit funny.

How many games have Sav and SDK played together? Pretty small sample to make any firm conclusions. What is it in particular that makes those two incompatible but not a combination that doesn’t include Henry or Kolo?

And why is it Sav that automatically becomes the problem? SDK have been below his best all year - with or without Sav in the team. If Sav is playing better footy, and you can only pick one, why is it automatically SDK? What happened to the idea of picking the player in form.

FWIW I think SDK will be a gun for us and play 200 games. And it will be moot next year anyway when Sav goes to port. But this has been pushed on here a bit without any rationale

Maybe a little left field, but could one factor that may potentially help swap a decision for Ratugolea be Narkle being on a senior list next year?

We know they’re great mates who have live together before so could a potential suitor sign Narkle? We’ve seen similar before with other teams who’ve signed a mate of their main target

I’m not sure with the mid-season draft if Narkle put a 6 month or 18 month contract as his starting point, so he could already be signed up with Port for next season. But if he hasn’t, could Essendon who he played VFL with earlier this season be willing to put a deal to him if they think it could be seen as attractive for ER to then join a club where his mate is already signed with?

Narkle is on a 6 month contract. But I don’t think it matters. Esava requesting a trade to port is about the most likely trade of anyone this trade period.

A bit like bowes with us last year, early interest will trump any late play from a 3rd club I’d say.

If Sav was left out of a best 22 finals side when fully fit... I would think that would confirm for him that he needs to look elsewhere.

It would then be a Dangerous Liaisons situation ... Beyond Geelong's control. They would have to trade to who ever he would like to play for. Geelong will not pay silly money for a guys they over look when it counts
But I asked if we don't make finals, do we hang onto our younger players that show more than promise, like Sav, or...

We will have a few go when we are knocked out of finals but next year with danger duncan et al will be the big year for retirements.

Isaac Smith just announced his retirement. Very timely

He only considered Port due to lack of opportunities with us- that has been corrected this year, Sav will stay on, he always wanted to.
Ridiculous considering his departure because we happen to have Dek as well.
No it hasn’t been corrected. He has played VFL and was only put back in the senior side when Blicavs went down.

Ok, so what I'm reading here, it's a done deal, Sav goes to Port, weeks after he helped us beat them. Super stuff.

They literally announced Smiths retirement as you posted this haha

How did Parish come back into conversation. I thought it was a done deal he was re-signing but haven't heard anything since?
Though nothing has been said absolutely anywhere he’s been offered contracts at other clubs and has apparently stated he’s wanting to stay at Essendon.

It’s round 22 this week, history says a free agent who hasn’t signed by now is gone

Ps.
They all say they want to stay, then they leave
